A Long Overdue Return

Samus Returns is a return to the sidescrolling 2D Metroid series and it does not disappoint.
There's plenty to enjoy but this entry is particularly brutal; newcomers will have some difficulty at first getting used to the new mechanics.
The 3D effects are gorgeous and it's a shame only now is the 3DS finally graced with a Metroid title.
A pivotal scene of development is beautifully fleshed out and paints a clear picture of who Samus is without a single word spoken toward the end.
This game is the longest and most expansive of the 2D Metroid games but replaying it has been a joy.

This is a game about exploring an ancient, abandoned planet, trekking through dark caverns and avoiding dangerous monsters as you try to wipe out the last of the Metroids to bring peace to the galaxy. The game is pretty hard and the dangers of Planet SR-388 are going to cause more than a few deaths for all but the most seasoned adventurers, but it is never unfair and the game always allows you to overcome them by paying attention and learning from your mistakes. This game is an absolute must play, and if you've never played a Metroid title before, there's nothing else like it!

This is done in the traditional sense of an old school side scroller, NES style. It doesn’t disappoint, fun , great graphics and the 3D is superb!

Great game, the only problem is it's part of a series full of all-time classics. Much more combat focused than other Metroids, which works in this game's favor, it's implemented in a way that feels natural for the series and really helps set this game apart. This biggest issue I'm having is that the world is just not as natural, cohesive, and interesting as Super Metroid, Fusion, or any of the Primes. The backgrounds are nice and add some depth and have interesting touches, but overall the foreground environments you will be traversing are all very same-y feeling rocky platforms. The progression is a little too automatic, as well. You will rarely feel the need to backtrack and search every nook of the map. For some that's a plus; for me, however, I want that feeling of being lost and needing to explore in my Metroid games.

Metroid is back and better than ever in this new 3ds iteration. I was pleasantly surprised just how much I was really enjoying this game after I decided to take the plunge. This is my first foreray into a Metroid game but it does not disappoint. Sure it’s a remake but there’s so many welcome additions to the gameplay and setting that it feels like an entirely new game in its own right. I definitely recommend to any fan of the series or newcomer. Make the purchase, you’ll be glad you did!

If you like Metroidvania style games, you'll love this game (I think that should be pretty obvious though). For those that don't know what I just said, this is a 3D side-scrolling game in the style of older 2D side-scrollers. This game is reasonably challenging, but not impossible. The Metroid series first came out on the original Nintendo in the late 80's, so it's pretty well established.Don't worry if you've never played any of the other games though, this is a great one to start with.

I'm a Big Metroid fan, so this latest edition met all my expectations. Although it's a remake don't let that fool you, the game is excellent.
Amazing graphics, immersive atmosphere, and amazing controls/gameplay.
Nintendo did an amazing job updating this classic game. Felt familiar and fresh at the same time. Brought back memories of playing Super Metroid back in the SNES.
If you're a fan of old school Metroid or side scrolling games, I highly recommend this!

Metroid: Samus Returns is a throwback to the 2D days of Metroid, long before the great Metroid drought of the late 2000s / early 2010s. This game is based on the older Metroid title Metroid II, but the level designs have been remade to be much more sprawling. While the atmosphere of the redesign is not as thick as the original, the mechanics are greatly improved. Samus moves much more nimbly, can aim 360 degrees around her, and use melee attacks to counter foes. She also gains access to new Aeon abilities, which allow her to scan the surrounding map, temporarily become invincible, or unleash a flurry of bullets, amongst others. While this title doesn't match the greatness of Super Metroid, it is a solid addition to the franchise to hold us over until Metroid Prime 4.

Samus Strikes Again

Super Metroid is one of my favorite games of all time, and I'm ALWAYS in the mood for more of Samus' adventures, even if some of the games in the franchise left me with a bad taste in my mouth.
Exploration, discovery, tense encounters, and atmospheric environments are the bread and butter of Metroid, and although I have high standards when it comes to these things, Metroid: Samus Returns gave me another quality entry in the series.
Metroid: Samus Returns is a remake of Metroid II: Return of Samus, and Nintendo really overhauled the entire game. Enemies are updated, new abilities are added, and the game is far more expansive. If you are looking for a full-bodied Metroid game, this is it.
Metroid: Samus Returns has over 10 hours of content, even for players who want to mainline the essential encounters, which makes it over three times longer than Super Metroid. Bigger isn't always better, but in this case, cleverly designed puzzles, tons of new abilities, and strange boss encounters create a truly fantastic experience.
The new melee ability, in particular, is one worth mentioning, as it makes it easier for Samus to rebuff charging attackers, taking advantage of a momentary stun to do boosted damage. The game requires players to use the ability too often, and it can get tedious when melee countering provides the only opportunity for damaging dangerous enemies.
Overall, Metroid: Samus Returns is a fantastic game, and one of the best Metroid games, and one I'd highly recommend for any fans of Metroid, Castlevania, or other platforming adventure games. Now if it would only come to Switch...

Great gameplay, but not enough enemy variety to keep me entertained for longer than 1-2 hour bursts.
I like it but be prepared to fight the same Metroid boss like 25 times.

I've never played a Metroid game before and this makes me excited to try the whole series. It's a fantastic side scrolling shooter and exploring game. Finding all the power ups and collectibles is a blast for someone like me. The mechanics were easy to learn and made the boss fights challenging and engaging. All in all a great game!

I am a huge Metroid fan and this game just makes me happy to be apart of that community. This game is challenging, rewarding and all around fun. I hope plenty of people pick this up to keep this franchise going. This entry in the series offers a excellent sense of action, adventure, and in its namesake metroidvania style of exploration.

My most beloved franchise has finally returned! Now granted it is a remake, well more like a reimagining of Metroid 2. It's so good, controls are buttery smooth, along with the gameplay. Story is fine, not much going on with Metroid stories any way. Overall it's a great game and I'm glad Samus is back.

This is Metroid return to 2d like the golden days of Metroid games like Super Metroid on the Super Nintendo. This is a remake of Metroid II from the Gameboy with added features and way bigger and better game. Another 5 of 5 Metroid game here and a must buy for any Metroid fan period.

After being locked up in a dungeon by Nintendo for so many years, Samus is back in a big way. This is a complete remake of the 2nd metroid game and what a beauty it is. Let us all continue support the series so we dont have to buy 20 zelda/mario games each year as our only choice.
