Better than Sony, better than Bose

At the top of my priority list is a quality product that provides premium noise cancellation and comfort. This product delivers in spades. These are easily the most comfortable over-the-ear headphones on the market. They're the perfect weight and the soft leather wrapped memory-foam ear cushions are the best on the market. I can wear these all day without 1) getting a headache, 2) my ears sweating, or 3) remembering they're even on my head. I own the Bose QC35's as well as the Sony WH1000M2's. They're the same price as the Surface headphones and I find them lacking. First, the Bose provide excellent noice cancellation but little else. They lack in comfort, style and features. The Sony's are great headsets, but oddly, they don't fit on my head well, they give me a headache after extended use, and the noise cancellation gives an annoying hissing noise that irritates after a few hours. Additionally, your ears will sweat profusely. Annoyingly, they also auto-shut off after 10 minutes if you just want to use them as stand-alone noise canceling headphones without a bluetooth connection. These Microsoft headphones have simple tactile controls for dialing up sound, dialing down outside noise, or amplifying ambient noise. Simple and intuitive. The feature to pause your audio when you set them down is brilliant and flawless. The tap to pause feature works well; call-clarity is adequate considering there's no boom. The quality is exactly what you would expect from a Microsoft Surface product. I'll be honest; I bought these on name alone. I own both Surface book 2 sizes, three surface pro tablets, and buying my wife the new Surface Go tablet. The quality of this line is impeccable and these headphones definitely do NOT disappoint. For the first time in my life, I find myself wearing my headphones all day while I travel or work in my workshop. The only downside is the the battery life is not as long as its competitors; which i don't really care about. 15 hours is plenty and the USB-C connector charges them 3x faster than the usb micro does. So again, advantage Microsoft. Now, MICROSOFT, get on the ball and get us that Surface Phone. It will revolutionize a tired phone industry hungering for something innovative and new. Tiles are superior to icons and I miss my old Windows phone. Make it compatible with android apps (or universal app standard) and you'll have yourself another absolute winner.

My Surface Headphones arrived today. My go to headphones have been Samsung Level Over for BT and Audio Techna for wired, and my airpods for out and about. I was drawn to these for the design and expected quality. They paired easily to both my Note 9 and Iphone XS. I have not done much with Cortana, but the few test tasks worked fine (access contacts, phone, calendar, etc) and I'm sure it will be helpful enough. I bought these primarily for listening to music. They are very comfortable, and light. I have enjoyed my Level Overs, but after a while I always find I'm aware that they are on my head, enough weight to feel them. I have been using these between both the Note 9 and Iphone for several hours now, easily switching between both, and they have been a pleasure to wear and listen to. The dials make it very easy to adjust volume and noise. Forward, back and pause work easy to skip tracks and control play through tap controls on the dials. The equalizer in the Cortana app works well to tweak the playback. MS did a great job with the design. I have been wearing these while getting some work done tonight, listening and trying a variety of music, tweaked some EQ settings, been an enjoyable experience. I'm flying in a few days, looking forward to having these on the plane. I'd prefer a lower price, but I would say these are on par with the similar headphones they are competing with. I have had Bose QC in the past, these can hold their own. Worth checking out. Easy to use with multiple devices.

    Interesting Headphones (Open Box)

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I have spent a few weeks researching these headphones and seeing them compared to the Sony WH1000MX and the Bose QC35. I took a bit of a risk to buy them (but that's why we have 14 day return policy right?). Please note I do own a Microsoft Surface Book 2 and love the Surface line-up, and I also purchased these open-box for about $230. Pluses and Minuses here and then a full review below: Pluses: -Great convenience features such as dials to turn up and down music, and taps on the ear pieces to pause, etc. If you are coming from a pair of headphones with lots of buttons, this will greatly simplify your life! -You can pair up to 5 devices with these headphones and it will automatically know which one is playing music, taking a call or not. You can switch seamlessly between all the devices in your life. -Bass is booming on these headphones! That is definitely some bass rich stuff. I personally love that, I can understand why others might not. -Ear cups are comfortable and the noise cancelling is pretty good (not best in class, but definitely good). Cons: -Cortana is included. She really isn't that useful (sorry Microsoft). I don't really use Cortana much, and she isn't much of an addition here. -15 hour battery life isn't up to standard in this price range. I am coming from a pair of Sony CH700N's which I bought from Best Buy in Black Friday of last year for $99. The CH700's are a good set of headphones. The noise cancelling is good (saved me sleep from a lot of noisy parties outdoors). But I always felt they were somewhat cheap feeling, and also it is a chore to switch between devices with them, you need to press/hold power button and then go to device to pair. I switch between devices often and that is a major nuisance. Also adjusting the volume on the CH700N's is not amazing and noise cancelling is non-adjustable (it's all or nothing). Pausing and playing music requires pushing buttons and knowing which button is which (a learning curve I haven't mastered yet). So, I am brought to the Surface headphones because I just want a much more simple experience with my headphones. The touch controls so far are good. It doesn't respond immediately to every touch but it doesn't take long to get it down. One tap pauses, two taps skips a song, three taps goes back one song in the playlist. Simple, super convenient, and intuitive. You don't need to fish around for the right buttons with these headphones. The headphone dials are also very interesting, and I like them alot. This is just a really simple & easy way to turn up or down the volume and the adjustable noise cancellation is nice. One thing that was unexpected - I thought each dial would have a physical stopping point, a point at which you know the volume is max, or the noise cancelling is max. However, you can actually spin the dials completely around without stopping. The volume control/noise cancelling is completely software/device based. You can spin the dials into infinity. I think music benefits in some ways from the noise cancellation being down. If you did not know "turning off" the noise cancellation actually lets you have "sonic hearing" with the headphones (similar to Sony WH1000MX when you cover the right headphone). It feeds the mic input back to your ears, pretty cool and convenient for the office so you can still hear your coworkers. Another neat feature is that the headphones know when you take them off and automatically pauses the music. It takes about a second for the music to pause when you do so (which was my mistake a few times) but it does work accurately as far as I can tell (you just need to be more patient than you think). These headphones also work seamlessly with my Xbox which is a major benefit over the Sony WH700N's - I always had weird problems with them. If you plug in the Surface headphones to an Xbox controller using the included AUX cable you can utilize these for games and for party chat AND the noise cancelling and volume control also work in this configuration. The headset charges via USB C and features a 15-hr battery life. The battery life is quite low for headphones in this price range. Sound quality is really pretty good. Maybe not best in class, but definitely better than my previous pair. The bass is quite the experience on these headphones. That stuff is meaty and deep. I'm not sure if everyone on the planet would like that, and I hear that you can rebalance them using the Cortana app. My goal in purchasing the Surface headphones was to find the one set which will rule them all. I can play Xbox. Pair with my work computer, phones, and personal laptop all without touching the headphones. And the convenience factor on playing, pausing, and adjusting volume is significantly better than my previous pair. If I had to buy against the WH1000MX at $299 vs the Surface Headphones at $299, I would be remiss to not choose the Sony's. However, at the $230 or the $250 price point for the Surface Headphones I feel they are totally justified. They are really like 90% of the 1000MX in terms of sound quality, but also pack a punch with their own interesting features.

Excellent hedphones. Better than my Bose Qc35 II

These are excellent headphones from Microsoft. Here are my pros and cons: Pros: - VERY comfortable. The ear cushions are very soft and cover the entire ear. I don't get the pressing earache from these like I do my QC35 headphones. - The dials are great. Being able to adjust the level of noise cancellation and the volume with a simple dial is genius. - The sound is deep and excellent across all ranges. The QC35 have deeper bass, but miss the middle a bit too much. These are pretty even in depth throughout. - The microphone works pretty well. I use it for dictation and for Rosetta Stone. A dedicated headset is still better, but it works pretty well. Cons: - They do not fold up as compactly as the Bose. - The silver-ish grey color looks a little cheap. The Bose look more sleek. Overall, these are excellent headphones that are a serious challenge to Bose. I prefer the sound, comfort and functionality of the MS Surface headphones. Hopefully the next iteration will look a little sleeker, but these are great.

    Best Noise Canceling Headphones

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

My journey initially didn't start with the Microsoft Headphones. Before these headphones, I had the JBL55BT which were excellent but lacked the noise cancelation capability. I, of course, looked to Bose with their Quiet Comfort 3 but yet when checking them out at Target, I was hesitant because for $300 I was getting an on and off and button controls which of course I understand that bose sound awesome but would like to have a little easier control. They also felt loose on my head, and I have a big head which I didn't like how they felt. Seeing the Microsoft Surface headphone which did give you the control to adjust not only the volume but as well the noise cancelation was an impressive feature I did love. I also loved the touch control for easy skipping or answering calls as well as long pressing to pull up Google which I prefer more than Cortona. The earmuffs are very comfortable that I honestly can wear them all day! They sound amazing; I love them. They are a bit chunky, but you soon get over them. They are great for studying when you need it quiet block out almost all sounds. The case that's comes included with the headphones is High Quality. I am happy with my purchase!

    Love/Hate relationship

I love the "Surface" products. I own an original Surface Pro 2 for personal use (still works and used) and for work I insisted on a Surface Book 2. I really, really love both of them. I work in downtown Chicago and walk under the "L" train on a daily basis so it's really loud. PROs: * Love the fact that I can connect to my phone and laptop at the same time without having to disconnect/reconnect * Very comfortable * Love the sound quality * Touch controls. I like that I can pause/unpause/skip/previous/ask Cortana. [See CON issue] CONs: * Noise Cancellation. I forgot to put the word "Windy" in front of Chicago. Wind hitting the headphones come through very loud and even drown out my music playing and the "L" sounds comes in loud as well. I also noticed that if the noise cancellation is on (set to MED) that I get a weird affect of it gradually increasing and then it goes back to soft and then repeats. * Touch controls are not consistent. I'll be listening to Spotify on my phone, pause the music and when I go to press and un-pause, it doesn't work. I have to find my phone and manually press play again. * Sometimes when I remove the headphones from my head the music continues to play. Other times, it's the opposite and it doesn't recognize they are on my head until I take them off and put them back on. I know it's a feature that it recognizes when they are on or off but it doesn't work all the time. I already done a reset several times hoping these issues would be fixed, but they did not fix the issues. So I'm on the fence about taking them back. If I did, I would probably try to exchange first and see if I just got a bad one. Like I said, I really love the Surface product lines so I'm hope I just got a bad one.

I have tried the Sony, Bose, and now these. I'm not a huge fan of the bose personally so for me it was between these and the Sony 1000XM3s. I really loved the look and feel of these. They felt sturdy and comfortable and sounded similar to the Sonys. The noise cancelling wasn't anywhere near as good, but it was good enough. There's 4 levels of control but it's hard to gauge which setting you are on without the app. So you find yourself going all or nothing. I didn't get any sense of pressure from the noise cancelling over time which is good. The controls for volume and noise cancelling are rotating dial. So every time I used them I would end up pulling a few strands of my hair.I don't want a headset that I always have to put my hair back for. Also the touch controls randomly stopped working for me twice over two days so I had to factory reset the device. I think these headphones are good but they definitely have issues. There are definitely better options available.

    Surprisingly Better

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

As someone who owned the Sony XM1000's and the Bose QC35's I can say these are surprisingly the best options of the 3. The surface headphones not only have (by far) the highest quality look and feel but the bass is also much better. The sound quality itself is almost identical to the Bose and I found the noise cancellation to be just slightly better than Bose or Sony as Bose struggles to block out high pitch noises and Sony really struggles with noise that is nearby (like someone talking next to you on a plane or subway). Also, I noticed the surface headphones are the only ones that fully covered my ears without touching themm too much. I cant wear the bose for example for more than an hour without my ears getting sweaty. They may not have the brand name "Bose" or "Sony" but in a blindfolded test the surface headphones would win.

I am a huge Microsoft fan, but haven't pulled the trigger on these given mixed reviews. After seeing them on sale for $250, I bought them. I own a bunch of headphones including the Bose QC and Sony XM3's. These were a huge surprise. The dials are amazing for both volume and NC. Much more handy than i expected. The NC is very good - same level as the others. The sound signature out of the box is somewhat muddy, but I used my EQ to change that and now they are the better than the Sony's. The sound quality on the microphones is amazing. I own a surface book 2 and the integration and mutliple device connection also a huge plus. LOVE THEM

Great sound (could use better bass) but that doesn't take any stars away because not too many headphones provide he amount of bass I'm looking for anyway. The dials to control the volume and noise canceling are smooth and have a premium feel. I was originally worried about the quality feel but it feel extremely solid. Comfortable for all day use. This is the first pair of "over the ear" headphones that havent been too heavy. I used them yesterday for about 4 hours nonstop.. My ears werent sweaty at all! Packaging may be a bit bigger than you're used to. Great pair of headphones overall! I had the Bose QC30 II & the Sony III. Of the two, the Sony headphones aren't as comfy as the Bose however the sound quality is much better than the Bose (in my opinion).
