Microsoft's effort in the growing field of wireless earbuds, I wanted to like these a lot, but I found a lot of frustration with them. The first obvious issue is that Microsoft doesn't have a phone offering any longer, while its rivals in this field, like Google, Samsung, and Apple, do. So while these are platform agnostic for mobile, they lack a defining mobile device to pair with. Microsoft tries to make up for this with some nifty Office 365 integration on the PC--the real time PowerPoint transcription worked pretty well in my testing, and I could see a definite education use for it. But I'm unsure how many average users will leverage that capability. The design is okay aesthetically, with flat white circles, about the size of a quarter, the only visible part when inserted. The part that is inserted into the ear is a light gray. They come with a charging case, also in flat white, with only a gray Windows logo on the top. It's all very minimalist, seemingly the only design language tech companies are capable of now. Setup: Setup was an exercise in frustration. Pairing went easily enough, and you should download the (pretty good) app, and one of the things you'll need to do is DISABLE TOUCH CONTROLS. Changing the ear tip coverings to get the right fit--something you'll fiddle with a lot if you're like me--became very annoying as Bixby constantly launched on my phone, over and over, from the simple handling of the device. Perhaps a setup video said this, but it wasn't in the written instructions, and you couldn't have disabled it until you had it paired with the app anyway. Only after you get the right fit--if you do--should you re-enable the touch controls. And change the coverings I had to do a lot. It comes with small, medium, and large, and helpfully suggests that one size may not work for both ears. But I never truly got a great feel with both at the same time. I'd have one that felt snug, but slightly uncomfortable, and the other felt comfortable but in imminent danger of falling out. They didn't while I walked briskly and tried a brief jog, but the feeling of insecurity was inescapable for me. And of course with audio devices of this type, the fit affects the sound quality. The sound quality is pretty good overall, but weak in the bass a bit. Is that inherent, or from my fit difficulties? I don't know. At high volumes it does block out external sound, but at lower, and safer, volumes, you can still pick up external noise. Still I ran these through a gamut of music from AC/DC to classical, and in general it's decent sounding. Phone calls were fine and clear, both for me and for the caller. The touch controls, in normal use, are okay, but I was constantly afraid I'd knock the left earbud out each time I touched it. The app, both on Windows (which allows for the Office 365 integration) and on Android, give a good amount of control and information. I assume the iOS app performs similarly. The bottom line, for me, is that these sound good but don't blow me away, have some nice cool features, but fundamentally I just can't get use to the fit without them feeling like they are only loosely secured. There is no way to get these to stay in my ears. They seem to work for some people, but the design must exclude a great number of people as well. Miserable design that's different just for the sake of being different.

Nice earbuds with a twist :)

The Microsoft - Surface Earbuds - Glacier are a somewhat different take on your normal earbuds. They twist into place in your ears, so that they rest and are held into place more in the space behind your ear canal. They include three different sizes of earpieces so that you can find the best fit for your ears. I found the small size worked best for me, but they come with the medium size installed when you buy them. They also come with a set of large earpieces. The earpieces are very easy to take off and put on, so it is easy to try all three sizes if you want. They are made of a durable soft rubber and are comfortable in the ear. I did experience a little ear pain after a few hours wearing them, but I just loosened the twist a little in the one that was bothering me and that solved the problem. The earbuds have a quality feel to them, and the sound quality is very good. I recommend downloading the Surface Audio app that lets you adjust the settings and tweak the EQ. The earphones come with the Flat settings enabled, and they really come to life when one of the other presets are selected. My favorite is the Pop preset. Really turns up the warmth and bass. You can also choose Classical, Jazz, Rock or adjust the 5 band EQ settings manually with slider controls and save your own presets. The Surface Audio app also lets you turn the touch control on or off, update the firmware, rename the device name or change the language of the device’s audio prompts. Another difference to your traditional earbuds is the touch pads that let you perform touch gestures. This works well for doing things like launching your phones digital assistant, turning the volume up / down, advancing a music track / going to the previous track, pausing the music / starting it back up, or answering a phone call. You can even start a Spotify playlist by triple tapping. The gesture for launching the digital assistant like Google or Alexa on Android is an extended press and I sometimes triggered this when trying to perform the volume up / down slide gesture. Call quality is excellent from both sides. The microphone picks up my voice excellent, and I could hear the caller nice and clear. While playing music, it will pause while talking, then start back where you left off once the call ends. I also tried the dictation features in Microsoft Office, and it worked great. It is not something I normally use, but I will use it more often now. It was very accurate but would take a little practice learning all the voice commands. These earbuds are not noise-cancelling, so you will hear the noises around you to some extent. You will hear someone come up to you and start talking, unless you have the audio turned up a bit higher. One thing that I think could be improved is the status indicator light on the case. It is limited with a single light that you have to open the case to see. It would be nice if there were several lights to allow you to see the battery level of the case battery perhaps, and the earbuds without opening the Surface Audio app, which only shows the battery level of the earbuds and not the case. The case will display a red light when it needs charging, but it would be nice to see where it is other than fully charged or needing a charge. The earbuds lasted around 6 hours on a full charge for music play at around 45% volume which is comfortable for listening, and recharge from 0 to full charge in about 40 minutes in the case. I am not sure why, but the left earbud loses its charge considerably slower than the right. When the battery ran out in the right ear and shut off the earbuds, the left earbud still had 50% battery level according to the Surface Audio app. Overall, I am pleased with these headphones, but do wish the case provided better indicators of battery levels. I also wish the indicator light were either on the outside of the case or the area over it was semi-transparent so you could see it without opening the case. A 3-foot USB-C cable is included in the box, but not the power adapter, so you will need to provide that. I am a member of the Best Buy Tech Insider Network Program. Pick these up as a promotion present for myself to go along with my Surface Headphones 2 as i wanted only the one app for all my sound devices and having a Surface laptop just made sense to finish with the set. Get them home and crack open the box.......NOTHING. Case wont charge left earbud at 17% right is 0%. Plug in the USB-c cable to an anker power port, standard pc USB port, and even a surge specially made for charging USB device and nothing. Now gotta rethink the whole dynamic...thx again Microsoft for messing up things that should be a no brainer.

    Won’t stay in my ears

I received these Microsoft Surface earbuds through the Best Buy TIN program. Reviewers in this invitation-only program are provided products for the purpose of writing honest, unbiased reviews. Microsoft’s new Surface buds look and fit much differently than those offered by rivals. While no buds are what I would consider attractive, these are even more odd looking than AirPods. Only, instead of resembling half a Q-tip dangling out of each ear, these look like large alka seltzer tablets or a set of ear gauges. Despite the odd look, I was eager to give the new style and all-day comfort that it promised a try. I can live with the look of the unique design but my real complaint is the fit. These are the worst fitting earbuds that I’ve ever tried by far. They’re designed to be inserted and rotated so that they lodge securely in place on the ear just outside the canal. Problem is, they will not stay in my ears at all regardless of which tips I use or how I insert the buds. I follow the instructions to the letter. I insert the buds with the tips pointing slightly down and rotate back until they feel securely lodged in place. I sometimes even test by lightly shaking my head a few times after insertion to verify they are secure. Yet, no matter how secure they initially feel, they always wiggle free and fall out in under a minute. Even after readjusting, they still fall out very easily. I tried all three included sets of tips as well as experimented with different sized tips in each ear. These just do not stay in place securely at all and I can forget about exercising or performing any type of physical tasks or moderate movements while wearing these. I can’t even walk softly across a carpeted room without them falling out. The included setup guide says they “may fit differently than any other buds you’ve worn”. This is 100% true but the downside is that they don’t stay in my ears at all. I checked around online to see if others are having similar issues with the fit. I found a few people but so far it doesn’t appear to be a widespread problem. I reached the conclusion that the shape of my ears just isn’t accommodating for these particular style buds. My ears are normal size and don’t have any noticeable odd shape or features. I say “noticeable” because there’s always a possibility they may have a very subtle structural difference that is affecting the fit. To me, the region of my ears where the buds are supposed to rest seems too shallow to accommodate these as designed. The ill fit forces me to handle the buds so frequently that it triggers my second complaint; unwanted swipe commands from the buds to my phone, sometimes without my knowledge. The swipe touch control is very sensitive. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve inadvertently started or stopped music or activated Siri while fiddling with these buds simply trying to keep them in my ear. This is also an issue when handling the buds in general. There have been times where I’ve taken the buds out of the case without using them, only to hear music start playing unintentionally from my phone. The flat button style design of these buds makes it somewhat difficult not to touch the swipe surface when handling, especially while being worn or handled inside the case. Sound quality as best I can tell seems okay with good warmth and clarity. The highs, mids and vocals are all nice and clear sounding. Bass is detectable but has zero oomph or resonance due to the lack of a canal seal. Calls sound clear on both ends with no distortion or cut outs. These are squarely in the middle of the pack as far as sound quality. They sound better than some of the lesser name true wireless buds I’ve tried but not as good as a few premium well-known brands I own. Ambient noise intrusion is pretty noticeable during calls and while listening to music. There is no active noise cancelling nor even passive noise blocking due to the lack of a seal. Even quieter external sounds like papers shuffling can be heard with the buds in place and music playing at low to moderate volume. I wish I could go more in-depth about sound quality but due to the challenges faced with getting these to fit properly in my ears, I never felt I had a good enough fit nor long enough listening session to rate sound quality as in-depth as I’d like. I also can’t try these outdoors unless I want one or both buds to end up falling onto the concrete or asphalt. I don’t even feel safe walking across hard interior floors while wearing these. Being forced to sit motionless while trying to listen long enough to judge sound before these quickly pop out again is like trying to rate how well a car drives while only being allowed to drive it one block at a time. Regarding everything else; The carrying/charging case has a USB-C charging port and bundles a USB-C to USB-A cable but is not wireless charging compatible. The buds are paired to devices through the case which makes pairing a little easier. The Surface Audio app can apply firmware updates and also has a customizable EQ. I did apply one update which took about 30 minutes to complete, so it’s not something I suggest performing with a low device battery. The EQ works okay and allows creating custom sound profiles but mostly only affects the higher frequencies and has very little impact on increasing bass. The swipe controls work well and are intuitive to use but as previously mentioned, are also very easy to accidentally trigger when handling the buds. Bluetooth connectivity seems strong and reliable. It works well and the buds stay paired and connected even when my source device is on the other side of the house. The buds can be used independent of each other but I typically experience frequent drop-outs and non-responsive swipe control issues whenever I do so. I don’t get drop outs when both buds are used. The buds do not auto-pause when removed nor auto-resume when inserted. As I said at the beginning of my review, these were provided to me through TIN for an honest and unbiased review. I have to honestly say that had I purchased these, they’d already be returned or on the way back to the store for a refund. This is a case where one style definitely does not suit nor fit all. It’s a shame because from the very limited use I was able to get out of these, they sounded promising.
