Essential for the Surface

It is essential since the new surface only has thunderbolt ports. Use this to hook up to the USB devices you already have. I was unable to notice any loss in speed from using this adapter. The Surface should come with one in the box.

Fixed my headphone problem

Small enough to feel like you were stressing the port in such a small device.
