Decent Keyboard but not for Touch Typist

I was desperate to get a keyboard before I was heading out for a trip and they ran out of the Type Cover 2 for my Surface Pro 2. The only one they had available is the Touch Cover 2 as I've been looking for a backlit keyboard for the surface. As far as functionality goes, this keyboard is very good for those who don't type a lot. But if you're a touch typist, this keyboard can become frustrating when typing. As I'm writing this review, I'm typing on it but there have been a few times already that I've backspaced because it didn't register the keys because I typed too fast. It does give a tactile sound from the speakers which makes it really nice to hear but it isn't the same from the actual type cover keyboard. If you're the type who types a lot and throughout the day, this keyboard isn't for you and should get the type cover 2. I will be returning and exchanging it with the type cover 2 since they now have one available.

You need to buy this or the Type Cover...

I purchased the Touch Cover 2 (...notice...Touch Cover #2) which is a huge improvement over the original touch cover. As most are aware the cover also serves as a screen protector when not in use. The materials are of high quality but the price is a shocker! I mean WOW, 120 bucks! But, the price of the 64GB Surface 2 is cheaper than an iPad with 64GB which makes it somewhat of a deal. But you do need the keyboard to perform some things that the touch screen will not do, i.e., in IE...pun intended! There are sensors that pick up on your hands nearing the keyboard and the backlight will illuminate. I have really been enjoying my Surface 2 and Touch Cover 2 with no regrets. Hope this helps someone! Merry Christmas!

Makes the Surface into a quick laptop

I use this with a Surface RT Gen 1. Its great, as it allows laptop like functionality with the most minimal of thickness added to the tablet. This 2nd Gen Touch Cover has a back light which is worth getting. The only thing about this keyboard is that it give you the exact non-tactlie feeling like typing on the on-screen keyboard but on a separate attached cover. Hitting upper-case keys and symbols via the shift is hard to ascertain because you do not have the mechanical feel of the actual shift key - but at least it works. The trackpad is OK, but a BlueTooth mouse is better. All in all I love it. Pricey, but I got it on sale and used BestBuy rewards to bring it down 60%. If you have a Surface, this is a good accessory to get.

Great Keyboard for my Surface Pro 2

When I bought my Surface Pro 2 last Friday (25 Oct 13) I knew I wanted one of the typing covers. I tried both in the store and liked the feel of the "real" keys on this cover. When I took the tablet and keyboard home and started setting it up, I used the keyboard a lot. I don't like tablets that don't have a well integrated keyboard, or require only an onscreen keyboard, so this was a GREAT buy! Where it is not a full/normal key board, it certainly provides the tactile feel of one when typing. For such a thin cover, to have these kinds of keys as well as a pretty good track pad, it really makes working on the Surface Pro 2 almost the same as a full Laptop. If you purchase the Surface Pro 2 I fully recommend this cover over the other option.

    buggy; touchpad unresponsive

    1. Tap-and-drag, a pretty fundamental touchpad gesture, is nonexistent. People have been complaining to Microsoft about this for MONTHS, basically since the Type Cover 2 came out, and yet it was not addressed in the most recent update. No one-handed selection or dragging. NOT OK. Am I seriously going to have to go out and buy a MOUSE? 2. The touchpad "buttons", such as they are, are very, very nonresponsive. This is a much bigger deal than it needs to be because of #1 above. This is also something people are complaining about online and Microsoft needs to take notice. 3. Why is the touchpad surface FURRY? Who thought that was a good idea?

Being used to a MacBook Pro, I love the Backlight. I appreciate that it is backwards compatible with the Surface 1. Only complaint is the sensitivity. I also have the touch type which is more like a regular keyboard, much better for typing a lot. The touch cover seems like it requires too hard of a key press, especially when used to a touch screen. But it is a good cover and its light and practical so I usually keep it on. Would buy it again, but really think it should be under 100.00.

Works but really not worth it

I mean $120 buck for this thing? It shows wear and tear very quickly. The dirt from any and everything sticks to it. Really gives a dull feeling to typing. Easy to make mistakes on really need to give it a lot of time to get the muscle memory down. Even then I still find myself finger pecking to avoid mistakes. It does work as it should and it gives you all the function you need very mobile. I just think it you are much better off spending $15 more and getting the type style.

Our tablet was broken while traveling and we thought it unusable. When we got to Best Buy to visit Geek Squad all we wanted was help to transfer info from cracked tablet to newly purchased one. Andrea showed us that all that was disabled was the on screen keyboard. After attaching the new keyboard, the tablet was totally functional. My husband now had a tablet to use and when I attach it to my new one, it makes bigger tasks so easy. Also, next time we travel, we will use it for protection.

I have both the original Touch Cover and the new Touch Cover 2 and the newer version is far and away the better version. The backlighting alone was worth the upgrade. It makes it much easier to see in any condition. The Touch Cover also has more tracking points so it is easier to use. It does take some getting use to to type on, but I was comfortable with it within a day. Highly recommended!

I purchased this for the Surface Pro 1. I tried it out for a day and realized I didn't like the touch keys- seemed like I made a lot of typos with the touch cover (I use MacBook Pro and Air as my main machines). I bought the type cover to see if that would improve the experience and I find it much better for typing and not that much thicker/heavier. I returned the touch and kept the type cover 2. I imagine comes down to personal preference of course.

I originally purchased my surface tablet without the cover, only because I forgot. I was ok with the on screen keyboard but as I started using the MS office apps more, it became evident that I needed a keyboard. This item fit the bill. The feel of it is not much different from the keyboard I use with my desktop. It really did not require any adjustment on my part. It makes my tablet easier to use on planes and there is that layer of protection I otherwise would not have.

Great addition to my Surface 2. Easier to use than I thought it would be since it doesn't have actual keys. I like how it lights up. It used to click when you tapped a key to let you know you touched it, but that stopped working after a day or so. It makes a great cover for the screen so you can save on the sleeve, seems to protect the screen pretty well. Occasionally it will stop working, but all I do is close and reopen it and it starts working again.

I was shopping around for a while for a keyboard that would with stand the abuse I put my things through. So far it has been working great. Have not had any issues with it and did take a little while to get used to not having keys. Seems very responsive and every key I touch works great. I would recommend it to anyone that find themselves taking it with them in the outdoors just because it is easy to clean dirt and wipe any water off.

I really like my touch 2 cover very much, it is very responsive and I do not feel that my typing is being affected due to this ( you do have to get use to the touch keyboard initially).. it does feel like it is one tablet rather than attaching a Bluetooth keyboard. the backlight feature is very useful if you are using the tablet and keyboard in a dark area. overall I am very happy with my purchase.

It's great to be able to use my Surface Pro like a laptop with this Touch Cover. I purchased the Touch Cover over the Type Cover because I know I will use my Surface Pro in tablet mode most of the time and I would like to be able to easily fold the keyboard under the Surface without the feeling of any physical keys being pushed while the cover is behind the Surface. This Touch Cover works perfectly for my needs!

I chose the touch cover 2 over the type cover because I wanted something thin and light for travelling as well as something I could easily clean. It does take a little time and practice to get used to, but I found slowing down my typing speed has made a big difference. The price is a bit steep, but it is a well built accessory and the magnetic connector seems very firm and holds tight. Zero lag.

I do recommend this to friends. My granddaughter is very happy with the Microsoft - Touch Cover 2 - Black. With a magnetic connection, this Microsoft Touch Cover 2 N3W-00001 keyboard quickly and easily attaches to your Microsoft Surface tablet. The pressure-sensitive keys intelligently sense when you're deliberately typing to help prevent accidental input. It is everything it states.

Can't recommend this as a keyboard. If you want an $80 cover, ok. But using it to type is a mess. I'm a good touch typist and have never had a problem, but this keyboard misses about every other letter and going back and correcting all it misses is a pain. I took it back and bought the one that has the expressive tactile feel of a regular keyboard. It is excellent!

The Type Keyboard for the Surface tablet is a great addition. I love how they keys are type keys like an actual keyboard. This makes for more accurate and quicker typing. I initially bought the touch keyboard and was not satisfied. It's great because you can click the keyboard on easily for working or click it right off for play. Small, lightweight, and easily stored.

I was amazed at how easy it was to type with the touch cover, it did not take a lot of adjustment like I thought it would. I could type almost as fast as I can on the type keyboard. The touch cover is much thinner than the type cover, but I found that I did not notice the extra thickness of the type cover and liked the feel of the type cover material better.
