Subtle, at first but the momentum builds!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Computer programmer Caleb supposedly wins a contest to spend a week at his reclusive boss's enormous estate. Secretly, he is there to determine if the A.I. in his boss's robot can pass as human by having conversations with the robot. Since she is kept locked behind a Plexiglas (?) wall, talking to her is his only real option. The boss, Nathan watches everything on surveillance cameras from his bedroom. When the power goes out one day and the emergency power takes over, all the doors are programmed to lock. Thinking the cameras are off, Ava asks for Caleb's help to escape. Doing that won't be easy, as all the doors are locked and the key card Caleb was given only opens certain doors. Not the ones he needs to help Ava escape!

Best Sci-fi Film of Last 10 Years!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ex Machina on Blu-ray is magnificent! The performances are all fantastic, especially Alicia Vikander as the artificial intelligence robot girl. This film could have been really goofy if the script was not so smart and the actors were not firing on all cylinders. The cinematography is beautiful, using glass walls to show reflections of off screen actors and to infer separation between the characters' psyches. There is also a nice contrast between gorgeous, wilderness exteriors and claustrophobic, concrete interiors. The story keeps you guessing all the way to the end and provides a very satisfying conclusion. Best Buy had a great price on this item too.

Pretty interesting movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I watched this right after seeing Chappie a month before. The combination of the two really messed me up. AI is such a bumpy, complicated road to travel, I don't know if it's something we should be pursuing. This movie's pretty good. It's also interesting when you realize the undertones regarding a certain character who you relate to and think is the good guy, only to realize he's just as bad as the "bad" guy in this movie. Is that a spoiler?

Exceptional AI that's Deceptionally Human!!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. What an intriguing, well crafted story with the perfect mix of Sci-Fi Artificial Intelligence, thought-provoking dialogue and stimulating characters with plenty of visual art and dynamic movement. Well underrated film with a relatively short term at the box office. Perhaps due to the nature for the R-rating. I certainly would hate that it was too sophisticated than the American norm of thinly-plot storylines of underdeveloped action hero "blockbusters".

An Absolute Beautiful Picture
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is one of the most beautiful pictures in the history of cinema. The story is magnificent and extremely relevant to the times. The imagery is breathtaking, the sets are exquisite. The performances by the 3 main players and the 1 supporting player are phenomenal. An intelligent, thought-provoking experience that will have hold of you well after it ends. A must see. To everyone involved... Bravo!

Excellent film!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Ex Machina is a character- and dialogue-driven science fiction thriller, in the best possible traditions of the thought-provoking, cerebral, and visceral speculative fiction films of the late '60s and early- to mid-'70s. The spiritual descendent of classic science fiction films such as Silent Running, Soylent Green, Dark Star, Rollerball, and The Man Who Fell to Earth.

Great Performances
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Without giving anything away, I will just say the entire cast is fantastic. It's a film that asks a lot of questions about what it means to "human" without being overly philosophical. You run the full gamut of emotions with the 3 cast members and it's kind of hard to process until after it's over. The limited special effects are exceptional as well.

Superb
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Wonderful cast. See them again in The Force Awakens. What happens when a creator crosses the line, and programs self awareness into a robot? Time to bring in someone to test her out! Cinematography is a sight to behold and meticulously planned. Characters are distinct and intriguing. Sad, scary, moody, wondrous, worrisome, all at the same time. Def check it out.

Ex Machina on Blu Ray
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. All of my many Blue Ray reviews focus solely upon the actual quality of the film from Standard Def DVD quality to the higher standard set for Blu Ray. Summaries of the plot and opinions of the story line and acting can be found in the majority of the other reviews so I do not want to be redundant. My rating is based solely upon the Blue Ray disc's video and audio quality and not the quality of the movie itself. Keep in mind, however, that the quality of what you see and hear is also dependent upon the quality of the TV monitor you are watching on as well as the home theater set up you are using. The monitor I use is a fairly new Panasonic ZT 65" plasma and the amps, speakers, cables, OPPO 103 BluRay player and AVM-60 7.1 Atmos enabled Surround Processor I use are hi end esoteric gear to provide me with a more realistic and objective perspective. The Oppo player is not enabled to transcode Atmos audio so it will default to the next best audio coded, in this case, DTS HD MA 7.1 I am not trying to be a snob here, but just pointing out that what you see and hear is very dependent upon the quality of the gear you are using. VIDEO QUALITY..... Overall the video quality is decent, nothing extraordinarily great or poor. The focus tends to be soft and contrast not as sharp as you might expect. In an opening scene with the helicopter landing in the field, grass blowing in the helicopter's wash is somewhat blurred and indistinct. Color Grading leans towards a darker but warm coloration. Skin tones appear to be quite lifelike considering the actors are all in a subterrainian environment. I did not see any artifacting or problems with the video of the film. The Mbps rate appeared to average in the low 30's. AUDIO QUALITY..... With a lossless DTS HD MA 7.1 audio codec, one might expect more foley individual directionality to be steered from one of the surrounds. That rarely happens though there are some instances of it occurring. The volume levels are just perfect however so that dialogue remains clean and transparent without fighting with the musical soundtrack. It is the music soundtrack that really lifts the audio of this film. Spread beautifully through out the surrounds, it completely envelopes you within. For me, it is rare that a soundtrack adds so much to my enjoyment of a film but this one does. EXTRAS..... I do not know why companies consider previews of other films to be extras. They are just ads that take up room on the disc causing for even greater compression of the movie you are paying for. This disc had 5 long ads for other films. Other than that, extras include a theatrical trailer, a panel of the scorer, director, actor who played the antagonist and a couple of others there to do a Q & A after a screening. It started off with an extra long trailer of the fllm..(so now you get the same trailer twice) and then a somewhat boring panel discussion. The other extra is your basic 'Making of' documentary. No big shakes in the extras dept. I must admit. I kind of regret getting this Blu Ray as the film is not one of those that I will watch more than once a decade or so. Great concept but.... I do hope this review has been of some help. Thanks for reading.

One of the best of 2015
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In a year crowded with excellent films, this one stands above most as a unique and engrossing sci-fi drama. An impending sense of dread and an intense atmosphere had me on the edge of my seat. Challenging and intelligent themes and questions will leave you thinking and talking about EX MACHINA long after it ends.

It Leaves An Impression
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.A slow plotting of suspense, that may not build up to an overly fresh ending, but regardless is a work that leaves you thinking about it long afterward. The acting is top-notch across the board and I found there to be scenes that were oozing with sinister meaning and oddly sexy ones as well.

Awesome
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Easily the best movie I've seen this year, yes... even over Mad Max and Furious 7. This is a sci-fi drama with eerily building suspense that features really only 3 main characters. It really keeps you on the edge of your seat. The CGI on Ava is absolutely flawless. This is simply the best movie nobody has seen.

Can we build a machine that is human?
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. In this movie they try to build a machine with artificial intelligence that can interact and fool real humans that it is a real human and not a machine. a classic sci-fi robotic concept done in a more current time setting. This movie does have a digital copy code that you can redeem.

Kept my attention all the way through
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I thoroughly enjoyed this film from the start to the finish. What was really interesting is the dialogue which spoke about a real danger and likelihood in our world today. The actors each fit into their roles perfectly and were believable. Good science fiction is not easy to find but this is keeper.

What a thrill ride
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This movie is deceptively quiet and easy going. With lots of conversations and beautiful scenery. But then it gets so intense, you'll be finishing it up at the edge of your seat. It's hard to say anything else while avoiding spoilers. It has one of the best scores I've heard in a while too.

Terrific Movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Terrific movie about the dangers of Artificial Intelligence and human emotions. Alicia Vikander is an excellent actress and I'm not surprised that she eventually won an Academy Award for supporting actress in "The Danish Girl".
