Customers appreciate the Moto G Plus (5th Gen) for its affordability, especially during the holiday season. They are also impressed with the camera quality and the excellent battery life. The phone's storage capacity and unlocked status are also well-received. However, some customers have expressed concerns about the lack of NFC, which limits the use of Android Pay, and the speaker volume, which they find inadequate.

Had to get a phone due to my previous phone dying from a defect, and most websites recommended this phone as the best bang for the buck. They were all right. It was on sale for 224.99 for the 64GB version, and this is the smoothest and fastest phone I've had in awhile. Zero bloatware, Android 7, metal body. Really feels premium for the price. Only annoying think is the inability to remove the Google search bar from the home page, but a third party launcher app takes care of that.

Bought this phone on Black Friday discount. Overall it's OK for the $229 cheap price.
Software:
Biggest drawback: slow software support and update. It's still running Android 7.0, and last week (early December) the security standards only got updated to --- August !! In the first week of December the security standard was January.
Other than that, Motorola's very basic Android OS is good, no bloatware, makes the phone run faster and frees more storage space. But this also means it lacks some necessary utility apps -- such as text editor, calendar, and resource monitor -- need to download 3rd party ones.
Not being able to customize program icons on screen is quite bad.
"Setting" is confusing to use for new users.
"Notification bar" on the top can be tricky to drag down, often I need to try multiple times. Notification for all newly installed programs are set to "ON" as default, but I wish the default could be "Silent", so I don't need to silence them manually.
And when USB connected to computer, the option to enable "transfer files" isn't explicitly displayed in notification, but I must touch the charging battery icon to bring it up -- inconvenient.
Also if you use prepaid service like I do -- it doesn't display the remaining minutes anywhere. Although your carrier may provide their own app for such things.
Phone:
The phone software sucks. If during a phone call I open some other apps, can't bring the back the number pad dial -- it will just disappear!! Had to quit some 800 customer service calls several times because of this!
Speaker/sound:
Sometimes sound is unclear. Plugging in headphone doesn't help much.
Some ppl say the mic noise cancellation is bad, though I can't verify it.
Camera:
The big bump of camera lens seems fragile, and camera glass easily gets dirty. Fortunately I also bought a rubber phone case for protection, this isn't a big problem for me. But the case makes it bulky.
"Twist to turn on camera" is a great feature, can skip the unlocking to instantly use camera.
Main camera is OK, but the front selfie camera's field of view seems awkward, my face image seems slightly distorted on the photo.
Button:
The fingerprint scanner's swipe function isn't as convenient as advertised. I still haven't got used to it after 2-3 weeks. Also it won't work if you wear gloves---something quite bad in the cold winter outdoor. I would prefer 3 separate hard buttons (home, back and forward) instead.
Volume buttons are too close to power button.
Sensor:
No NFC reader is a big drawback. Also I wish it could have a temperature sensor...
Screen:
The large screen is good for reading, and I like the "wider" aspect ratio (unlike some other phones with height:width = 2:1).
Resolution is more than enough for a crystal clear display.
But the touch often won't work if wearing gloves (even very thin gloves), again quite inconvenient in cold winter outdoor, especially when picking up a call...
Network:
wifi occasionally gets mysterious disconnections, though most of the time works OK.
Battery:
Battery life seems good (maybe because I haven't installed many apps). I'm able to get 4 days without recharging, if not used frequently.
But, because of the cheap price, it definitely worth it. A very good deal. If you see it on discount, buy it!

This phone replaces my two year old Galaxy 6, which I really liked. After a month, I can say that I am very satisfied. I like that it's unlocked, international and has 64GB of memory. I like the battery's capacity to last at least 24 hrs even with location and data turned on. The camera takes very good pictures too.

After endless waiting for Motorola to release the G6, I decided to pull the trigger and purchase the G5 Plus based on countless hours of research. I was looking for an unlocked phone that could be used on Verizon's network through Tracfone, and this phone suits me just fine. It has the look and feel of the higher end flagship phones, at a fraction of the cost. I primarily use phone for email, text, and talk with a few apps thrown in for good measure. No lag or delay while scrolling, and battery life is satisfactory. I can use the phone all day and I've yet to see if below 70%. My only complaint is there's no LED notification, so I installed a third party app which seems to work about 90% of the time. Also had to install third party app which allows me to set the time during the day that the phone automatically goes into polite mode. Nothing worse than hearing everybodys phones ringing, beeping, or chiming all day long...but, that's the generation ME society we're living in today.
Overall, very pleased with my purchase. Considering the G5 Plus actually uses a faster SOC than the G6, I think the Plus is the way to go regardless if both were on the market today.

Overall a great phone, it's fast, has a great camera, and is unlocked with no carrier bloatware! I've had two minor issues: 1) Headphone jack is a bit picky which headphones will work with it. 2) fingerprint scanner is quick but doesn't recognize fingers very well - especially if phone is warm (e.g. while charging). Otherwise I'm very pleased with it!

This Moto G5Plus is one of the best phones I have ever had. I love the Octa-core processor and 4 gigs of ram. It hooked up to Boost Mobile just fine. The TurboPower charger is awesome! it will charge the phone to 100% in under an hour in most cases. I would buy this phone again in a heartbeat. Camera is crystal clear. I have no issues or negative things to say about it.

My son has had this phone for over a year and highly recommended it. I had an iPhone 7 that was provided by my company until I retired. I planned on buying an iPhone 8 but I was concerned about the fragility of an all glass phone and I just couldn't see spending $700 for an iPhone 8. I purchased the Moto G5 plus for less than half of what the iPhone would have cost and I couldn't be happier. The display is excellent. I'm sure $700 phones have better displays but the Moto G5 plus display looks great to me and I have used an iPhone 7 for the last two years. Moving to the Android operating system presented me with some challenges but there are plenty of tutorials on the Motorola Moto G site and they are high quality. The apps I use run quickly. I haven't noticed any lag. Overall, I would say you can't go wrong with a Moto G5 plus. I would note that the Moto G6 will be available by the second half of May 2018. I suggest you check out the G5 plus and the G6, compare prices, and decide which is best for your purposes and budget.

Everyone says all the good things about this phone (It has SO many!) so I'll stick to the problems.
Of course, I moved up from an older, lower LG phone so everything on here is an improvement EXCEPT for the preloaded Google Assistant garbage that apparently can't be shut off or removed because the settings are LOCKED. Not a huge fan of Nougat either - VERY messed up and overly nested menu structures with related settings bouncing back and forth two or three levels to reach and many so called "features" that I have no use for but have to work around.
Other Cons: Finding a nano SIM card that worked in it. Getting enough volume for the alarm to wake me in the morning or using the speaker phone. Slippery body that had to be put inside an aftermarket rubber case so it wouldn't fall out of my hands every time I used it. Unlike previous versions, this model is NOT waterproof. Biggest CON of all is a non-replaceable battery. I almost passed it up for that and am still wondering if I made the right choice. I usually keep a phone for a long time which makes battery replacement necessary. I took off one star for the battery - Time will tell.

Brand response from Motorola Customer Care

Hi JAck,
Thanks for your feedback! We made this phone just for you. Almost all phones now are all Nonremovable phones and have a decent design which suits our customer's style. The phone is water resistant. Waterproof phones are not guaranteed that they would still survive. We have the same phone here as yours and we don't have any problems with the alarm. Almost all phones now are supporting Nano SIM card and the time passes by, software updates are being updated.

About four weeks ago, after researching budget phones, I bought the MOTO G5 plus 5th generation with 64 GB for my wife and, based on her experience, one for me a few days ago. The G5 feels solid, is fast, and does not have bloatware. The camera is very good and the battery charges quickly. Does everything a much higher price phone does and it does it well.

I've had cell phones since the early 90's, way before they went global in popularity. This is a top shelf product without the exaggerated price to go with it. Finally, a 64G phone with 4G of RAM for a price that doesn't break the bank. And the frosting on the cake is that Best Buy will match the price should you find it elsewhere for less, which is exactly what I did. Battery life is great, I can easily get 24+ hours with one charge. I use it primarily for 1. internet -teaching classes, searching info, shopping, news, messaging, FB, Twitter. 2. Camera, which is outstanding. And 3. Calls. No complaints whatsoever. Am not into it for music or games. And yes, this may sound like a girl-thing, but I finally got the gold one! I know it's not a big thing for some users, but it sure is for those of us who've been using cell phones since they were the size of a Honda.
This sleek, gorgeous model is comfortable in the hand with just the right amount of heft, and durable with its newest generation gorilla glass screen. A win/win!

Bought this to replace Samsung Galaxy S5 with 16GB memory. Needed to upgrade because S5 kept running out of internal memory & I kept having to delete apps. I usually buy a new, but not current model phone on eBay, but looked around first. I am very happy with my Moto purchase. It is as close to stock Android as you can get without buying a Google phone; it runs Android 7 (Nougat) with a promise that it will be updated to Oreo; it has a fingerprint sensor that actually works, and it has excellent wifi and is fast. The only thing it doesn't have is NFC, which was not a big deal for me. It has an excellent screen, but not the super resolution of the $700 phones. It is 1920x1080, which is fine. It also has 4GB RAM. I thought I would miss my Samsung, but I don't. The Moto is an excellent phone and an amzing buy for under $300. I bought from Best Buy rather than Amazon in case Amazon preloads its own apps. I haven't shot any video yet, but still photos are okay for what they are - smart phone photos that you can capture because you always have your phone with you. I have only had the phone for 2 weeks, so I cannot comment on reliability. So far, I am very happy with my purchase.

Motorola does it again!
This is a fantastic device, and a big step up from the Moto G4 plus. I have used this phone with AT&T, verizon, and T-Mobile and this device works well on all 3 carriers. Unfortunately Verizon and AT&T block this phone from utilizing both wifi calling and VoLTE. T-Mobile does not, both of those features work great on T-Mobile.
Pros:
- Inexpensive
- Reliable
- Quick
- Carrier agnostic
- Qualcomm quick charger included.
Cons:
- The single front facing speaker isn't great and is on the quiet side.
- poor low light camera performance.
Final Thoughts:
This phone is truly the budget king. If you are looking to spend $300 on a phone, that you can use on any Carrier you want. This is the phone to get.
The only thing customers that should be hesitant are those that play very graphically intensive games, and someone who is looking for a stellar camera.
