i've had this laptop for about a week and so far it's been fantastic overall. the keyboard backlighting is awesome, the bloatware is minimal (hard disk is empty, the ssd isnt even half full with about a dozen games installed, albeit mostly older games), the msi software is functional and easy to use and heat isnt as bad as i expected (never even hit 80*c yet, even with the vents partially blocked by a blanket).
the reason for 3 stars is the audio. it was pretty good for a laptop. was. something happened and now the speakers and headphone jack have screwed up sound. i think a capacitor blew. audio through usb and hdmi still work, so havent decided if i want to go through the hassle of returning it yet or not. i wouldnt even think about it if this was a <$600 laptop. i would imagine this is a one off event, not the norm. otherwise i doubt i would have this "PC MAG reader's choice" sticker under the steelseries logo.

Excellent build quality except for the LCD lid, it is easily bendable. Also, the TN panel is not quite " IPS quality", but it has not caused concern for my 30 something old eyes. Very Crisp image, slightly dull colors but easily manageable.
Fan sound is audible but I have not experienced coil whine (that or am not sensitive).
The OEM software almost made me return the laptop, the OEM software alone. I hope MSI gets this, when dealing with the masses, it is never recommended to provide a system that can only run at 10% performance due to OEM software.
Audio is good once you remove niantic (sp?)
Uninstall Norton (that or suffer 50 mb/s read 35 mb/s write on your 256 SSD). Once removed I was getting 500 read / 360 write
On to the fun part, it would seem that there is no custom vbios for the 1060 3GB that comes with this system. I can play with the boost curve and yield good results, nothing stellar.
IE (1920x1080):
Firstrike graphics - 12758 67C
TimeSpy graphics - 3820 69C
RE7 very high everything at 75-85 FPS
Doom Ultra both dx12 and vulcan - 75-95 / 100-125 (outside / Inside)

This laptop serves me well in every gaming and business way i needed, With a GTX 1060M in it, it can make the games look nice, and play phenomenal too. Octo-core (8-Core) Processor makes multitasking a breeze, and that i can have more than one monitor doing more than one thing. It can definitely Run a 2K monitor if you have to. 4K games run at about 15-40 frames because its not made to do it, but i stress tested it for the review. The only hiccup i had was with the sound drivers, and that was an easy fix, if you ever get a large N on your Screen during games, its Nahimic, close that out and it'll go away.

Returning

I was very excited to purchase this laptop. It took me months to choose one to get back into gaming and I heard such good things that I settled on this one. I don't know if it is just the model or what but it hasn't even been 24 hours since I picked it up and I decided to return it. Within 15 minutes of setup the screen went out. Like not turned off but just went all black and blank. I thought maybe a fluke so I restarted it. About 4 minutes in the screen kept flickering and eventually did the same thing. A brand new highly rate laptop is not supposed to have issues right off the bat right? I can't even make a proper review because I haven't even been able to test the performance since my screen won't stay on long enough for me to do anything. Less than 24 hours and sending it right back.

Sound Issues

Sound gets more and more muffled with each use. While the laptop cools down fast and has an excellent performance...the sound system needs work. Can't really enjoy videos or games to the full extent. I thought it was a windows 10 issue with the sound at first but it turns out it's the laptop itself. The first week of having this laptop everything was fine. Then the speakers began to get muffled and after a month everything sounded very low quality. Within 2 months the speakers are officially gone.
Conclusion:
If you want a gaming laptop then runs fast but doesn't have sound then this product is Perfect for you!

Get the ASUS 702

Please note: this laptop has the 3GB variant of the GTX 1060. Spend the extra $50 to get the ASUS 702; You'll get the bigger 17.3" screen and the 6GB GTX 1060. If you're spending > $1400 for a toy like this it should be future proofed with adequate video memory.
