Returned because they didn't have that bit of rubber around the screen. It's small, but important. That prevents the screen from rubbing against the keyboard and scratching the screen in those little shapes of the keys. It's so simple to do, yet they didn't do it on this laptop.

It is a piece of crap. Granted, when it works, it is a pretty fast piece of crap. However, programs crash, the built-in sound is absolutely horrible, and now, 15 months in, the mousepad zone stops working. This is not covered under warranty which is only good for 12 months. My last laptop lasted me about 6 years. Not this one. I am very disappointed that I wasted my money on this.

It's ok, there are a couple of things that I don't like about this computer, but other might not mind. Overall, it's better than some other that I've had but not the best.

The specs of this laptop are incredible for the price. This laptop is very quick, lightweight, and has a very solid screen. Only nitpicks I have are that the speakers will not blow you away, and the battery life is not fantastic, but it is sufficient for my uses. This laptop is one of the best values out there.

A workhorse that is still going strong after almost 4 years. Great for handling notation software and small to modest audio processing or video projects.

I feel bad giving this MSI Modern 15 A004 laptop only three stars. It's good equipment, but it's difficult for me to use, and there is no reason for it to be that way. I've been using this laptop for almost three months, since January 2021.
Here's what I like: It's clean, slick and no frills. Besides an Intel sticker and white keyboard letters, there's nothing disruptive or annoying to the eye. It's classy looking and quieter than a hummingbird. I did hear the fan kick on, but barely. It comes with a thin carrying case. It starts and shuts down fast and moves from task to task with ease, as it should with 16gm of ram.
Some things that bother me but aren't crucial: There is no number pad (which I knew), and it's difficult to adapt from having one. Push the plug for your headphones, earphones or microphone (if you use them) all the way in, as it takes a good push to make it seat. My microphone didn't work, but I found out the jack needs a TRRS 3.5mm plug. Sometimes the USB ports (3) are quirky; they work, then they don't. Re-inserting them takes care of the problem. There's no DVD/CD drive (which I knew), so you have to shell out more money for that, if you need it. Even then, sometimes the optical drive is not recognized until it's re-inserted. The part of the power cord (there are two pieces) that plugs into an outlet is only 18 inches long, and the outlet we need to use is three feet up from the floor. That means the cord doesn't reach the floor; it dangles down. We have to put a tall box under it so it doesn't strain the cord's plug. We then can plug in the other part of the power cord. There also is supposed to be True Color adjustments, but I could not find it on my laptop. Maybe it doesn't come with Modern models. The screen has muddy, dull colors, but compared to my older laptops, it also has much better contrast, making reading the screen easier. Sometimes the laptop will open an email, and sometimes it won't. Sometimes it will open a desktop icon, and sometimes it won't. There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason as to why. There is no way to set up the laptop to turn on when the closed lid is opened. Other laptops do that.
Here is why I give this laptop only three stars: I'm very disappointed with the FN, PGUP/home and PGDN keys. This keyboard combines them so that the pg operations are default while the home and end operations need to have the FN pressed and held first. This slows my typing way down. There is plenty of room on the keyboard to make them separate keys. There is an FN key lock. It is combined with the ESC key. It is supposed to work like the caps lock key. If you push down the caps lock key, every letter you type is a capital. If you press and hold the fn key then tap the ESC/fn lock key, you're supposed to be able to tap the PGUP/home key and have the cursor move to the beginning of the line of text. That also should work for the PGDN/end key, with the cursor moving to the end of the line of text. However, the lock key doesn't work for those keys. I still have to hold down the FN key to get those actions. MSI chat personnel said there's no way to change that unless I wanted to factory reset and see if that worked. No, I won't do that with a brand new laptop.
There is another problem with the PGUP/home key. If I type three lines of text and stop, that leaves the cursor at the end of the third line. I should be able to use the PGUP/home key to move the cursor to the top of the document. It won't do it. Instead, I have to press FN + CTRL then PGUP/home key to move the cursor to the top.
Another chat staffer told me to download Creator Center to resolve the problem. But after installing it, a message opened that I first should download MSI Business and Productivity Center, which came installed.
Another chat staffer suggested using an external keyboard to determine whether the problem is with the MSI keyboard or with the program software. I got out my old keyboard and found that it has separate PGUP and home keys, and PGDN and end keys, and that solved the problem. So here I am typing this review on a 10-year-old, $4.99 keyboard plugged into a $1,000 laptop. What I thought was a great bargain at $800 on sale has turned out to be no kind of deal.

Great laptop overall only problem I had was with the trackpad. The trackpad sometimes lag and feels sluggish. I got a replacement one and still had the same problem... Anyone else having the same issues or figured out to to fix it? I tried reinstalling the drivers and even contacted MSI but they couldn't seem to figured out the problem.

Terrible battery life

I have had this for 10 months now, the battery gets worse and worse. I can now count on about 1/2 hour of battery time with light usage (web browsing, email). Tech support insists I send the unit to them in california to replace the battery, they won't just ship me the battery for a very simple replacement. SO -one week to ship to California, "up to" 5 business days to check it in, 30 business days to repair and another 5 to pack it back up and ship it out. Another week to get back to me.....all for a job that will take about 10 minutes.
