Quirky family fun

Based on a comic strip, this movie is a lighthearted comedy that hardly takes anything seriously. Revolving around a family consisting of a father, mother, grandmother and two kids, it has the right amount of humor to keep you entertained. Being a gkids release also helps solidify the need for this blu ray. This is a great find in the sea of studio Ghibli productions.

This anticipated release of this blu-ray has been on many Ghibli fan's radars for YEARS. Now that it's available, it receives the same visual and audio fidelity upgrade you've come to expect from G-Kids and Studio Ghibli.
Regarding the movie: Very quirky, very charming. Consider it a film featuring small "slice-of-life" moments. The dynamic of the family is perfect. The animation is simplistic and allows the characters to shine. That said, some, some parts are very Japanese, which will leave many viewers unfamiliar with the film or the culture scratching their heads at cultural cues, pop-culture references, and common tropes. Don't let that deter you from watching it, but definitely watch it before buying it.
For everyone else, it's a solid recommendation.

A Ghibli movie that's not too Ghibli.

Don't expect this movie to have the same "magical" atmosphere that most Ghibli movies has, that being said, it does not take anything away from the movie. It's just not what you would expect from a Ghibli movie. Unlike most Ghibli movies, this movie was directed by sao Takahata. The animation, the feel, and the story deviate a lot from the classic Ghibli movies. It's a really good movie but sometimes it feels like it's all over the place, nonetheless we loved it.

Very different from the usual "feast for the eyes" work from Studio Ghibli, but really lots of fun! The characters are great, the stories are great, and the shorts are wonderful. Enjoyed all of it and will watch again! Nice to have on blu-ray, too!

Not part of Disney's original BluRay line of Ghibli releases, Yamadas is finally released to the masses via GKids here. Using simple manga-style design, this series of vignettes set in real-world Japan is poignant and humorous all at the same time.

A Sweet Animated Film

A sweet animated film made in short segments about everyday life in one family. The animation is hand-drawn and fairly simple. The stories grab your heart. You can easily relate to the Yamada family because their story is yours as well. If you love Studio Ghibli's earliest works, you'd love this one!

I love all the ghibli films and this one I just had to add to my collection. The hand drawn animation is enough of a selling point but the story and score tie it all together. An amazing film.

I'm only reveiwing the English dub. My kids watched it last month, and they still talk about it. They think it is very funny, and unique. I recommend this to families that are into imaginative takes on everyday life.

My Neighbors The Yamadas is simply a masterpiece; some people judge it for the lack of diverse animation but the in-depth life lessons/values and the simplicity of it completely make it to what it is to be; a great film.

so this is one of the first movies to come out from Studio Ghibli. It is drawn differently from what we have become accustomed to nowadays but it still carries all the Ghibli charm we've learnt to love.

My Neighbors the Yamadas is excellent! Only anime greater than this one is Heidi (my cartoon review of Heidi https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pYa9KCzF5OI )
and Isao Takahata directed both of them!

This is a great movie, its not one long movie though but its series of shorts, which are all funny and cute on their own, though its not as deep as Miyazaki's works but still good.

As always, have to remind people that if you are buying a Ghibli film, make sure to get the GKids version, *not* the Disney releases!
