Stay away from the smart home if you value sanity

Can’t connect. Apple Home sees it and says it’s connected but can not even tell it’s on. Nanoleaf App can’t see it. It should just work in Apple Home without having to open the ugly and terrible Nanoleaf App. I curse their name every time (frequently) I have to open the app to “upgrade the software” on my Essential Bulbs — and then move from room to room while it attempts to connect. After buying Naoleaf products I had to turn all of my automations off because they would trigger multiple times over about ten minutes — awful when you actually want the lights up or off that day. The smart home is super frustrating and I would never buy any products as gifts. Matter has made everything even worse.

    excellent smart string lights

I bought these in January at a heavy discount ($45 for the product) and finally got a chance to use them this holiday season. Despite being bogged down by an app that takes forever to respond, these are actually really great string lights. At 100% brightness they're arguably too bright for indoor use and might be better suited for outdoor decoration, but we've been keeping these set at a comfortable 40% brightness on our Christmas tree. The lights are split into two separate strings, which can be a little tricky when putting them on a tree, but if you start them roughly 1/3 to 2/5 up from the bottom of the tree, you should have about the same amount of string for both ends. Just make sure you wrap one part clockwise around the tree and the other part counterclockwise if you intend to use some of the animated color scenes in the app. With the two strings combined, this is more than enough for our meager 6' artificial tree - we ended up weaving the strings in and out from the surface of the branches to the inner stand and back again repeatedly to make use of the full length. These string lights should be sufficient for an 8' tree, and potentially even a 10' tree. At full price, these string lights might not be worth it unless you've got money to burn, but if you can grab them on sale I'd say these are worth the investment.

Thr string lights are amazing, had to buy 2 boxes for my 7 feet Christmas tree. It workson 2.4GHz so ensure your phone is on the same band. Update rhe firmware to latest before attempting to try out thr various scenes on the app. With Apple home kit, its a struggle and haven’t been able to get it working it.

The 1.0 firmware was unusable and it took hours for the update to 1.2.x to take. Once it did the connectivity became stable and I was able to use the lights. The functionality of the firmware/software leaves a lot to be desired. You can do a lot of fading-style animations but not anything like a chase I wouldn't buy again unless there's significant software improvements, but I also dont regret the purchase.

Beautiful LED lights. Functional and easy to setup. I give it 4 stars only cause group scenes are not functional with matter devices. This could’ve been 5 if it supported thread like the rest of there devices. If you’re a person that likes everything working with Apple home. These won’t work on group scenes but the rest of the features work fine

I love these. They elevate the Dickens (pun intended) out of my tree and were easy enough to set up. However, I am an engineer who’s a smart home hobbyist, and I could see how the set up would be frustrating for someone who doesn’t have much experience in either realm. Side note: People who are having issues with connectivity should update the firmware before proceeding with anyone else, this solved any apparent oob issues for me.

Gonna leave a review for those having issues. First, get teh firmware updated on these before you use them. It solves a lot of the issues others have. Second, for $45 on sale, these are a bargain. Third, they work in HomeAssistant using the Matter controller. I'm not sure the kind of networks people are working with at home, but your ISP router you stuffed in a cabinet is gonna give you problems with small devices like these that don't have the strongest radio. If you have a mesh network of some sort, you probably won't have connectivity issues. I also recommend giving them a static IP. To conclude, the colors are great and there are many effects to choose from. Definitely buy it on sale ($45 at the time of this review) but I'm not sure they're worth the full $120.

These lights are work well and have many options for color and pattern. We used them for our Christmas tree the last couple years and also have one for putting on the house. Unfortunately, they are water resistant but not water proof. The power adapter got water in it and they no longer work.

    Much Better After Firmware Updates!

    Posted .

I own four other Nanoleaf products and have been a customer for over seven years, with no issues with any of their products. Having bought these new holiday lights on their website with an early-bird promotional code for their initial release (November 2023), I received these on day one and they were a beautiful nightmare. I hung in there knowing that with firmware updates, things should get better and I’m here to tell you, they have. These are a brand new product and like with most new tech, there were bugs yet they’re working beautifully now! I’d recommend for sure.

Really cool! Bright and colorful but oddly did not stay on the network. They are easy to bring back on by just powering them off and back on but they were simply not stable and took multiple attempts to get connected.

The good: pretty colors and solid construction. The music sync feature is neat. The bad: refuses to stay connected, constantly “unreachable” in HomeKit and the Nanoleaf App. It’s a new product so hopefully they can get it figured out with a new firmware update.

Really nice color and the app is easy to use. The only difficulty was getting one of the sets to update their firmware, but it eventually worked so I'm not going to dock a star. Note that I got these at a pretty ridiculous sale price, so my rating reflects that I basically got two strands and a protection plan for the price of one strand.

These work well (as expected) after a firmware update. They came with 1.0.0. I upped them to 1.1.1 after setup. I upped them to 1.2.2 a week or two later. I’ll check for another update tonight. I’d also recommend adding them to homekit first, then use the Nanoleaf app to manage, edit, themes.
