Customers are enthusiastic about the Botvac D80's cleaning performance, especially its ability to pick up pet hair and its relatively quiet operation. Many appreciate its ease of use and strong suction. However, some users experienced issues with navigation, battery life, and filter maintenance, while others reported problems with the charging mechanism and overall reliability.

Well let's start by saying that we love our Neato so much we named her Rosa. We have had her for 7 days now. I want to tell you a little about our environment at the house first. We have 4 dogs . We have a white lab, Red Healer, Corgi, and a Boston Terrier. We also live in the country with dirt and mud. To top it all off I am a landscaper and irrigator. So to say the least in one day the house can get pretty dirty. My wife and I would come home and vacuum every day after work because of the hair and dirt in our house. I was tired of seeing my wife work after she got home so I started to research robot vacuums . There is tons of videos on U Tube to watch showing you what all the robotic vacuums can and will not do. I liked how the Neato didn't crash in to things as hard as some of the others did. I also like that once the perimeter was done, it would clean in straight lines back and forth. We live in a 2700 sq ft house on the first floor and it takes Rosa about 2 hours to complete first floor. She will dock herself about half way and recharge. On that note we have lots of obstacles for her to maneuver around In our house from furniture to pet beds and toys and teenage daughters stuff in there rooms. I put her to a test when I got her the first day, we also own a Dyson vacuum . I vacuumed all the carpet before I sent her to work. After she ran her first round through the house she picked up things in our carpet that our Dyson $700 vacuum did not. That was my first impression of her ability to clean. We run her everyday due to the fact of our dogs and has not let us down one bit. Easy set up and let it do its job when you have it scheduled. I would recommend this to anyone that is looking for one.

Surprised and Impressed - And so convenient!

This Neato D80 purchase was my first-ever of a robotic vacuum, deciding even at the high cost it would be a worthwhile investment to augment my not vacuuming as frequently as I should, particularly being owner of a dog that sheds a fair amount. I've only owned/used the vacuum for 12 days, so this review might be premature, but my initial observations are that I can already tell a difference in how fresh my house feels when I come home each night, with the vacuum scheduled for 3 cleanings per week. The cleaning takes 2 charges for the vacuum to cover the house, which is about 2000 sq. ft, and has 1 of 4 bedrooms closed (too much clutter at the moment). With the dust bin pretty much full after the 1st cycle, I usually empty it and clean the filter quickly with my Dyson DC07 vacuum when I arrive home, and then the vacuum finishes the 2nd cycle. Thus far, even when I've moved the charging base around, the D80 finds it way home without a problem and I've yet to see it get stuck anywhere...also surprising!
I mention my Dyson vacuum specifically as a point of reference for any who may own one. I've read some reviews where people speak of the Neato D80 as noisy while others say it is quiet. I'm definiltely in the "quiet camp"...very pleased with how quiet this D80 is, although having never heard a Roomba for sake of comparison. But, if my Android phone Sound Meter app is anything close to accurate, my Dyson registers 80dB just freestanding with the phone about 2 feet away, while the Neato D80 registers 60dB, the latter value being what the app compares to "normal conversation at 3 feet". I already thought the Dyson seemed quiet in contrast to a prior Hoover WInd Tunnel vacuum I once owned, so something even quieter is terrific!
Not really a compliaint, because I understand the limitations of small vacuums like this, but my biggest wish would be for a dust bin large enough to accomodate full house cleaning. That said, perhaps I'll find it meets up with that wish once I have gone over the house well with the Dyson for a deeper clean. Recommended before using a robot vacuum, I deliberately didn't do that because I'm curious to see just how much dust/dirt/hair remains behind for the Dyson to vacuum up after the Neato has done its job a few times. Perhaps a good and thorough cleaning with the Dyson, will then find that the frequent scheduled vacuuming with the D80 leaves little enough behind that a full-house run can be completed with only a single emptying of the dust bin required, thus I could schedule the D80 to run earlier while away and be done before I'm home after work. If it reduces me to only needing to "Dyson" my house on a monthly basis, that would be super.
I bought the Neato after being very undecided between the D80 and Roomba 880, but really liking the concept of a more methodical cleaning path than the haphazard one of the Roomba. However, I really liked the Roomba's advertised dirt/dust sensors for giving extra attention to cleaning where needed. I don't doubt that the Roomba has a better support network, being a long-established brand, but I opted for the 4-year Geek Squad coverage for a little peace of mind in that regard. I actually anticipated buying the Roomba 880 but in spite of the store I visited being shown online has having it in stock, that wasn't the case. So, the D80 being available and knowing I could easily return either vacuum if I didn't like it, I chose to save $100 and go with the D80. At the moment, I think I'm going to be very happy with that decision, but have the advantage of an extended holiday return period to still take it back if I change my mind for any reason.
I've been happy to see that I don't really need the magnetic boundary marker to restrict where the D80 goes. Thus far, I've only used it when truly wanting to keep the D80 to one room, such as when first evaluating it. Thinking this to be adhesive magnetic tape, I was happy to find it is simply a magnetic strip that is cut, placed, and moved as necessary, so nothing unsightly to leave out if that's not desired. But, one could leave it in place if desired, without it being too much of an eyesore if neatly trimmed to fit and then stuck in place with double-sided tape or other adhesive. Probably a bit too pricey to use in that manner though. I conveniently put it away by just sticking it to the side of my refrigerator where it's not seen but is readily convenient for use. Review of how well mag. strip work are mixed, relative to whehter you cut a strip to fully span a gap being closed off, or go with a shorter length. My observations are that is is prone to being pushed away from the area enough when the D80 comes to run along it, such that it could open up the area enough for the D80 to make an undesired entry/exit. Better to position the mag. strip so each end is braced a little against something if the strip is short enough to not have much weight. Overall, a minor issue and again, one I've not been concerned with given a general lack of need to use it.
I was a little concerned about a need to block off my dog's food & water dishes with the magnetic strip, but a far cheaper and easier solution was an inexpensive $4 platic utility tray I found at Walmart that is large enough to accomodate 3 dishes, and stands high enough that the D80 chooses to ignore it. I wasn't sure if that was going to be the case after seeing the D80 roll up on a heavy rubber mat and then again atop a dog frisbee on that mat. Humorous to watch, it did seem to get stuck but finally freed itself. I thought the same might happen with the tray but it didn't, thankfully. So, a very easy and effective solution, doubly good because the tray also collects scattered dog food or water splashes.
Of the impression that even the higher-end Roombas might still need to be repositioned to fully clean a house, the laser-mapping feature of the Neato suggested it might well be able to navigate my house without troubles, and so far, so good. It's super-convenient not having to worry with the Neato magnetic strips or the lighthouse/virtual wall of the Roombas. The first time I watched the D80 doing a full-house clean, I wondered if it really would cover the house properly after seeing it turn out of a room before finishing, and again after entering another room. But, sure enough, it did seem to seek out boundaries first, and then return to each area and clean them with what I'll call its "straight path" method. Lastly, yes, where the Roomba is said not to do this, the Neato does indeed return to resume vacuuming where it left off at before returning home to charge.
I'm not sure how effective the spinning side brush is, but that would also apply in a review of the Roomba, as both the Neato and Roomba brushes seem relatively lightweight, such that they primarily will just whisk lightweight balls or clumps of dust, hair, etc. from along baseboards and such. I think a slightly stiffer brush would be more effective, but that's only a guess. So, regardless of how effective the brush is, the Neato's square front design does truly seem to offer a more effective approach to cleaning than the Roomba, not to mention allowing for a wider roller brush to be used.
I'm the type of person who does pretty thoroughly scrutinize a product before buying it and am happy to report that for this initial period of observation, I really don't find anything negative to report with regard to the D80. Lower-cost filters...OK, that would be nice, but regardless, great job Neato!

I'm on my 7th Neato botvac! Yes, that's right, 7th. I'll explain. I started with the XV-21 model as a gag anniversary gift, but the joke was on me. Not only did this gadget turn out to be useful, it quickly became a beloved member of the family!
I purchased the warranty, which I typically don't but I'm super impressed with Best Buy standing behind its warranty. THhe finally quit one day, no warning, it just left its dock to start vacuuming and then quit.
I took it back to best buy and was told Neato didn't make that one anymore so Best Buy replaced it with the equivalent new model, the D80.
We have a two story house, and I was so impressed with Best Buy's performance I purchased a second unit for the upstairs.
We have two hairy dogs and 3 cats who aren't slouches in the fur department and these vacuums run every day and are full of fur.
These vacuums run in straight lines and it's awesome to come home to a clean floor that looks like you had a maid in the clean. Allergies are better too.
The down side is that they aren't the best built. we've had two units commit suicide by hurling themselves down the stairs, and two that inexplicably wouldn't run with a perpetual "please clear my path" message.
Best buy honored the warranty each time.
I recommend this vacuum only with the Geek Squad warranty.

We have dogs and hardwood. If we do not vacuum frequently we end up with a big mess. This vacuum has really helped keep the hair under control! We still use an upright once a week but this truly does a great job throughout the week. We love turning being able to do a quick clean before guest come over and were busy doing other things! I think we will always have a botvac from here on out!

It's absolutely amazing if you know what to expect it is a robot vacuum. it's bigger than you think heavier than you think and built better then you would think. It picks up 90% of debris dirt and dog hair the only problem I see that it has is on short-haired carpet it has a hard time picking up dog hair. You also need to arrange the house accordingly for the Neato. That consists of picking up dog toys socks shoes to make the life easier on the robot and once you have all it Corky spots figured out it will run great. I have two corgis and a shepherd. Before we purchased the D80 we had to vacuum everyday twice a day to keep up on the dog hair now we vacuum maybe once a week and the tile floor we Swiffer. if you have any shedding dogs buy a neato.

A bit too much of a 'bumper'
Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Not a bad little unit but... Bumped into the furniture legs quite a bit and my wife was concerned that it would damage the furniture over time. Not any super hard bumps but each leg of each piece was bumped several times on each cleaning run. Oddly enough, it seemed to bump mostly while it was turning. This is where the D-shape worked against it. It would tend to stop before hitting the legs but it was close enough that when it turned the front D corner would bang the furniture. Maybe the completely round shaped vacuums are a better idea. She wasn't necessarily worried about a single run but day after day she definitely thought it hit hard enough to take a toll.
I did not think the unit was too loud. Significantly quieter than a standard vacuum cleaner. I work out of the house and it would not bother me.
Suction wise it was fair. Seemed to miss picking up large pieces (like very same stones) off tile floors. Seemed to work better on carpets rather than floors. Also had an issue where the area rug was somewhat close to the wall so one side was on the carpet and the other was on the floor, so at that tilt the floor cleaning was sub-par. There was a lot to stuff in the waste bin though so it was picking up a fair amount of dirt.
Also, it seemed to wander all over the place. Did not match at all the claim on the box that it goes in straight rows. Perhaps we did not give it enough time to run for it to figure out straight lines but the bumping was too severe to let it keep going.
Did not internalize when buying that this unit did not have an app. I thought they all did. If I liked it enough I would have returned for an app connected version.
So all in all, if you have furniture that has cloth covered legs or you have kids and dogs already taking a toll on the furniture maybe you wouldn't mind. But if you care about your furniture I think this is not the droid you are looking for ;-)

Excellent vacuum

My wife and I are both seniors with a few physical ailments that make a regular vacuum difficult to work with. Our home is all on one floor (over 1900 sq. ft.) with carpeting and tile floors. The vacuum has been a godsend for us. It does an amazing job. For instance it cleaned under our king-size bed, an area that never gets a complete cleaning. The vacuum ran for about almost a hour and half before heading back to its charging station. After charging it automatically finished the rest of the house. It even went over several times, areas of the carpet that get heavy use.
I did a lot of research online, checking many reviews of different robotic vacuums. It got down to the Roomba 770 and the Neato Botvac D80. Finally made a decision in favor of the Neato unit. I like the way the unit went back and forth covering the cleaning of the carpet. I know they have remotes and wifi on some units, but for us totally unneeded. I also add the first couple of times we used the unit is very addictive, following it around like a child with a new toy.
My only suggestion would be for rubber bumpers on the front of the unit. I am calling the company to see if I can stick on some Velcro strips that can absorb some of the way the unit bumps into chair and/or table legs as an example. But that's it. For seniors or those with physical problems, the Neato is a lifesaver.

I purchased this vacuum on 10/30 so I've had it about 2 weeks.
I have the vacuum set to clean at 3am 3 nights a week.
My house is entirely hardwood downstairs and we have 4 cats roaming around there constantly. I am amazed every time I empty the bin at how much it picks up. It is really doing a great job.
I have only had a couple issues where it got hung up, on a laptop power cable (I forgot to clear it before going to bed), a cat toy and it got stuck under a chair which hasn't happened since as it learns where it can and can't go. The power cable and the cat toy were not seriously jammed so they cleared easily.
My only thing is it could be a little quieter, it IS a vacuum so its in actuality quieter than most manual models.

I purchased this vacuum because I am rarely home and have time to clean. I have two cats that shed- especially in the summer. This thing is great at cleaning. I usually have to run it 2x to get everything. The debris storage is not very big so I have to empty after every time I used it. Sometimes the vacuum will get stuck between chair/stool legs- It's a nice vacuum but a little expensive for the value it has. I got it when it was on sale: $50 reduced

Better than the Roomba

Overall I would highly recommend this product. I needed a robotic vaccum to keep up with the pet hair in my house (two cats and a golden retriever). Neato is rated number one in picking up pet hair but I wanted to put it to the test. My mother has a roomba so I let the roomba vaccum first. It picked up very little pet hair to the point where I would never purchase the product for that need. The Neato on the otherhand picks up so much pet hair that when I went over the carpet with my regular vaccum I didn't get much up at all. When running this robot ever other day, I only need to get the regular vaccum out every other week. I highly recommend Neato over the Roomba!

I honestly LOVED this robot and recommended it to many friends, however, I have used it for 2 months and it no longer works. It reads error code 3000, which is apparently a common issue with this vacuum. Save your receipt someplace safe and get ready for the hassle of dealing with returns/warranty repair.

This thing is super convenient and does a great job. Seems to cover a good area and the only time it ever got stuck was when we had the Christmas tree out with a tree skirt. My one complaint is that the menus are a little tedious to navigate when you have to change the schedule.

Let me start off with telling you this is my second Neato. The first one stopped working after 2 years. Luckily for me I had purchased the protection plan and was given a brand new unit. Gotta love that. My favorite thing about this is that it goes under the bed.....I hate dust but this machine just gobbles it all up. I use my regular vacuum to suck out all the dirt from the dust bin. Easy as pie. I love it and would have paid for a new one if I hadn't bought the protection plan. P.S. Buy the protection plan!

Better than my Neato XV

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
Previously purchased the XV pro a few years ago. I believe this version is smarter, faster, and quieter. We have 3 dogs and live in the country so we have a lot of dirt and ours runs everyday. The bigger bin is a big plus and "Mo" (our neato's name from Wall-E) doesn't get plugged up by the dog hair. This one does seem to have a squeaky wheel which makes it louder, but the actual vacuum sound is less. Our old Neato really started having problems after a year and we have had this one 2 months so long term only time will tell.
