    Great Modem

First, I am required to mention that as a beta tester for this modem, I received the beta version of this NETGEAR product for free, However, my review will provide my honest experience and opinion. I've been using this modem for many months, and have not had a single problem. Voice quality on Comcast phone service is excellent. My internet speed plan is 300/10, and the modem has no problems delivering. I've never had to reboot it for technical problems. It was rebooted due to several power failures in my area, and it came back up with no problems. I also had to reboot it when Comcast increased my speed tier from 250/10 to 300/10 (Comcast requires a reboot to update the modem with the new speed tier). The only possible disadvantage is that it does not have a battery backup built in, but with the proliferation of mobile phones, a battery backup is generally an unneeded expense. The modem may be a bit on the expensive side, but the payback period vs. renting a modem from Comcast is about 12 months. If I had not received it for free, I would have purchased it.

Even though this says it works with Xfinity, it does not work with the voice plan offer by xfinity. Had to return this.

Netgear CM500V Modem does not work with Mediacom

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I gave this 5 stars because I really never got to use this voice modem and do not want to talk it down to anyone because of that. Plus, it may work fine for someone else for what they want it for which is other than for the phone system on Mediacom Cable System. Reason is that I live where Mediacom is my cable provider. I have a Motorola modem and a stand alone Netgear Router that I own for my internet and TV. I was renting a SMC modem from Mediacom. I wanted to lower my cable bill and that is the reason I started looking for a phone modem or a voice over IP. That is why I when to Best Buy. The sale person there was doing the best that he could do because all I wanted was a DOSES 3.0 MODEM without WIFI and without a router built in the modem! This was what he came up with that did not cost an arm and a leg. I did see that there are people that have been told it would work with Mediacom Cable Services here. I cannot say that they were told wrong. From what I can say is from what my experience is that if you only want a modem to use for your phone over the internet then this modem did not work for me on Mediacom. Both of us tried Four times to get it to work. The last person really worked to solved the problem. In the end he had to go up a few tiers of experts and in the end they said that because of their system they have, if one wants to buy a phone modem it would have to be from them. Reason is I guess is because they have modems made to order for them. Anyway the part that runs their phone system. This last part is my opinion not Mediacom's! Anyway if you look on their web site and look for modem that they say will work with their system there will be a fairly large list from different companies. Then at the bottom of that list is a disclaimer that tell that all of those modem do not support voice or phone support. It then tells that the modems would have to support DOCSIS 3.0 OR DOCSIS 3.1 TO FUNTION WITH MIDIACOM'S SERVICE. Without writing all of the disclaimer is it boils down to the fact that if the modems are not supplied by Mediacom, Mediacom is not responsible for compatibility or performance or anything else. I was told that Mediacom has a purchase system for new equipment for those that want to own. So in other words, my opinion from what I read and have been told is if you buy from them the equipment will work on their system and because it comes from them they should be willing to trouble shoot problems and do what they can to correct those problem. That does not mean if the modem goes bad or become out of date that they would replace the modem. In other words then you will have to buy a new modem or start renting from them again. As it is now, from what I have been told I will have to buy the phone modem from them for those reasons but the main reason is that if you only want the modem just for the phone system and not anything else then I will have to buy the modem from them. As for the other people that are saying it will work with Mediacom Cable System all I can say is that maybe they are only using it for internet or TV. Of course it could be that Mediacom Cable Systems just wants to sell those modems or are trying to keep people as renters. From my experience with this company I do not think those are the reasons! I believe it is because they have had the modems made to order on the phone side of the modems to work with their system. I am only writing this to let all know what I believe to be true that I have been told from Mediacom Cable Systems when they tried to set this modem up to work. If there are others that know that this is not true great please tell those that want to use this Netgear CM500V for a phone system on Mediacom how to get it set up on a Mediacom Cable System. It did not work for me with Mediacom's help but go ahead and try it for yourself. Just remember this information only applies for the Mediacom Cable System and this modem with voice. As for any other cable system I have no idea if it will work or will not work. Now below this form is a statement that asks "I would recommend this to a friend" I have to say NO. The reason is because in this area of the country Mediacom is the only cable provider and because this modem is a cable modem and if anyone in this area was interested in this voice modem it will be using on the Mediacom Cable System. Which did not work for me with Mediacom's help!

    Very Happy with this Router

I've been using this router for the past couple of months. I wanted to own my own modem so I could save $10 a month on my Comcast bill but my account has both voice and data so I needed a modem that did both of these. I've been very happy with the modem. I was able to set it up at home without having to call Comcast, I was able to go thru the setup screens and it was activated in just a few minutes. Both the data and the voice work perfectly and the modem appears to be very fast. If you are looking to save some money this a great modem for that!

Get rid of the ridiculous $10 Comcast lease fee

    Posted .

I bought this modem to get rid of the $10 lease fee that Comcast charges for their horrendous gateway. It has been up and running (paired with a Netgear R6700 router) for about a week and has been solid. Setup was a breeze using the online activation wizard. For the online activation, you have to temporarily directly connect an Ethernet cable from the modem to a computer. My only complaint (which I don't feel warrants the removal of an entire star) is that the plastic case feels pretty cheap.

    Great Modem. Easy installation

I bought this modem based on the reviews here on bestbuy's website. They said it was very easy to install and that a call to comcast wasn't even required. It sounded good but I was wary. I can now say that they were correct. Hook it up. Turn it on. Wait for the browser to pop up. Sign into you're account and it is done. Could not have been any easier. Very pleased!!!

I bought this Netgear CM500V to replace the Comcast rental modem on my Xfinity Pro internet and voice service at home. The modem works just fine with no degradation of throughput to my router and handful of devices. The only installation glitch was on Comcast's end with their online activation of the device : internet access on the modem came up just fine but the phone (MTA provisioning) did not take. After two calls to Comcast Customer Service they sent a service tech out: he checked the signal levels and found they were fine. He had the phone dialtone up in a couple of minutes. Overall pretty painless way to save an $11/mo equipment rental fee.

Bought this as I needed a modem with voice for Comcrap. Works great as it is paired with a linksys wrt1900acs router. 175 up and 13 down. Coverage up to 300 feet away with great speeds due to the great router. Use of a non Comcrap modem and router is vital to keeping great speeds from the isp

    Not compatible with COX VOICE!

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I was able to set it up with Cox's rep (online chat) for internet, but when I tried to plug in the telephone, and it didn't work, I contacted COX again. They said it is not compatible with their voice service. I'm considering dropping my land line soon anyway, so at the rep's suggestion, I dug a splitter out of my tangled-wire box and split between internet for new modem and phone from old modem. I hope it doesn't affect internet speed! Anyway, this should be made very clear to sales staff. BTW cox's list of approved modems is sadly out of date. None of the listed voice modems are even supported anymore, much less manufactured.
