I used this camera on my 5-day vacation in the Caribbean. It was used during pool swimming and snorkeling.
Let's start with the Pros. Picture quality is nice under optimal lighting condition. This camera feels solid. The ability to capture images in RAW is a big plus. Various in camera special effects come in handy. Battery was decent but not great. Focus speed is decent.
Now the cons. I waited three months before the camera became available, a big thumb down for Nikon. This is an underwater camera but the front element fogged up after three days of used. Nikon recommended a screw on lens ($75) to reduce the chance of fogging; this is ridiculous. The camera did not come with an underwater strap...?! Nikon, do you expect your customer to hold on tight to the camera while snorkeling? There is no VR build in to the camera, which means handheld videos are practically unusable. Noise is noticeable in low light situation or ISO over 800; which is expected in CX format camera.

Great camera for waterproof. Only downside is the lens and LCD view screen fog in direct sunlight or high heat. I have found that keeping the camera covered when not using helps this problem. Takes great pictures and is durable. We let our 5 year old use it at the beach and in the ocean.

This camera is nice, the picture quality is awesome and the ease of use if amazing, it's almost like a DSLR and a point and shoot had a baby, the o my drawback is the battery life which is only about 250 pictures but that's understandable when you look at the huge display that it has instead if a viewfinder, other than that the only other fault is the tripod screw nount which is all the way on one side instead of in the middle

Do not put a lens filter on the camera before taking it into the water. The threading is not water proof and we had water leak into the pace between the lens and the filter. Ultimately, we had to have a repair shop remove the filter as the water in the threads made it impossible to remove. Other than that, it's a great camera. Shoots RAW.

I bought this camera for a trip to Alaska and it's amazing, I had to buy 2 extra batteries and a USB charger and a battery usually lasts for about 200-300 pictures, other than the battery life which is understandable due to the huge display instead of a viewfinder , oh and the tripod mount is awkwardly placed on the side instead of centered which in turns means you need a beefier tripod but picture quality and speed, flash and all other things considered are great

Me and my wife both love this camera. It has great features but you will mostly use the auto (point and shoot). We no longer feel like we have to leave our camera in the bag so that it does not get dirty or dropped. We use this camera in the water, snow, dirt, mud, etc, with out any problems. It is a little costly but well worth the money. I'm hoping that more lenses become available that are shock and water proof.

After a painful wait on the online order and massive confusion on the whereabouts of my order, it finally arrived in time for my trip to Montana. 3 days of fishing on a drift boat and it took great photos. Quick focus on fish close ups and beautiful landscape shots. As a guide mysel, I want great shots and the point and shoot cams did not cut it. Can't wait to get some underwater catch and release shots. 4 stars only for lack of underwater experience. I got the geek squad warrantee after paying high repair bills on D90.

The Nikon 1 AW1 is a really sweet little camera. But, I bought the camera to replace a Nikon APS camera for use especially on the beach. I found 1) that I could not see the display when I was standing in bright sun and 2) that the panorama option is essentially to take a movie. As far as I have been able to see the only fix for the first problem is to buy a Hoodman HoodLoupe Optical Viewfinder. I haven't used this in the field yet but it seems to be good, if cumbersome, solution.

Got it for my girlfriend who does not have the greatest luck with electronics and water or dropping electronics. Camera is easy to use. Only issue I have is that it was missing the lens cap for the camera when I brought brand new which is very disappointing.

I bought the camera for underwater use. It worked great until it leaked after about 4 months. The underwater pictures and video was really great. I had bought the Best Buy 3 year warranty. Be aware this does not get you 3 years worth of Coverage. It gets you the right to have it replaced one time in the course of three years. It makes no sense but this is what they told me after the camera broke. Anyway it's a very good underwater camera but expect it to fail at some point. I don't really use it out of the water so I can't comment how it performs on land.

If you are interested in a rugged camera that is better quality than a point and shoot, then this is the camera for you. Focuses fast, pretty sharp and vivid colors. If you want something that you can have more control over camera, then this is not a good choice, very few options with dials and things are deep down in the menu system. It is a bit larger than what I imagined...

I am still hoping to find the advantages of owning a Nikon 1 AW1, since I am a real Nikon fan. It is supposed to be an excellent camera for beach use, but I was totally unable to see the screen unless I covered my head and the camera with a towel.
