I have some thoughts about buying an alternative brand, but I'm glad I chose the right brand. Absolute precise like only Nikkor lens are, and it is made for my Camera. Price was good for the quality it delivers. I'm happy and would recommend for any amateur in need for such device.

Incredible Bargain - Sharp Lens with VR for $250!

This lens is sharp even at wide apertures, the VR (image stabilization) works great, autofocus speed is more than acceptable, and it it is very light and compact. The fact that it costs $250 and has effective VR is pretty amazing - no other company offers a lens with this feature for anywhere near this price.
As for image quality, search the various internet photo sites, such as dpreview and nikonians for sample photos taken with this lens by real users. The results are impressive! My copy produces similar results. The previous reviewer must have a bad sample.
Of course, the lens is slow (like almost all consumer zoom lenses), in that its widest aperture is smaller than a professional zoom or prime lens, so it's not a good choice for action photography in lower light conditions (like indoor sports without flash or outside sports at dusk). But a fast telephoto zoom will cost at least three times as much and weigh a ton.
I give the lens 5 stars based on a combination of image quality, value, and compactness/lightness.

Great Lens with bundle package D5200

This lens came with the D5200 bundle package. I was looking at this one and the 55-300. My wonderful sales agent showed me both lenses but started with the 55-200. He had me taking pictures of his coworkers clear across the store and then reviewing them to see how clear the pictures came out. No grainy pictures there! Then he gave me the 55-300 and though I was amazed of how close someone looked when zoomed in it really was to much of a lens for what I needed it for. I am taking pictures of my sons baseball team and him being in outfield. My sales agent did a great job showing me the first lens as he knew what I was looking for in a lens an knew the 2nd lens would be to much for me. But he knew that if I seen the 55-300 first I would only think about that one. I love that they are not hounding you to upsell to make commission!!
For me this lens is perfect for what I need it for. When deciding on an extra lens take into consideration how far your subject will be and how close you want to see them. Start with the smaller lens first then look at the larger one, you will be amazed!!

I got this as part of a bundle, and I am glad I got it. Lens clarity is great, and I can zoom further than the stock lens I got with my D3200 obviously. If you need this kind of range, for this price, go for it.

This lens came with my new camera bundle. I already had a previous version of this lens with the Nikon D3000. This lens seems to be just as good with a few upgrades from the old one that came with the D3000.

I purchased this lens as an added one with the lens that came with my camera. I haven't used it too much, but the times I have, it takes really great shots at longer distances. I would definitely recommend picking this up as an extra lens for their DSLR camera.

I bought this lens in a package to accompany my Digital SLR. I take a lot of dog pictures at the park and this lens has been incredible to capture those moments. It allows you to get great pics at any distance and is very smooth to operate. A great buy!

Purchased this lens to go with the D3200 kit for my husband. Gives him more of an option. He enjoys photographing animals and it gives him a better shot in trees than with the original kit camera lens. Bought on sale when purchasing with the camera.

Got this lens on a friend's recommendation - someone who is a far better photographer than I am. Will be an easy one to take with me if I only want to bother with one lens, not several. Still getting used to it, but the Nikon quality is there.
