Flagship Level Performance with Some Small Quirks
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nikon Z8 is an impressive workhorse that delivers flagship-level performance in a body that feels like a throwback to DSLR heft. That isn't necessarily a bad thing since it balances well with bigger lenses and feels built to last, but it does become a burden on long shoots or when I go hiking. Video quality is outstanding, especially with 8K oversampled down to 4K. Expect a small, but noticeable hit to battery life when pushing it that hard. The rear screen is a disappointment, not in quality but giant bezels feel outdated, and the tilt-only design limits flexibility. I wish Nikon would have done something similar to Sony's a1 II. There are highlights that still make the Z8 a top-tier tool. The EVF is surprisingly sharp despite being rated at 3.69 million dots, likely thanks to the high-quality panel being used. The memory banks are also a strong point. They update settings as you go, which is a huge improvement over the Z6III that resets everything to saved values on power-off. Still, Nikon missed an obvious feature. There’s no way to restore saved values when needed, which would save time between shoots when you want to start fresh. Overall, the Z8 is a powerhouse with a few rough edges that seasoned shooters will learn to work around. And Nikon's Kaizen mentality via frequent firmware updates shows a commitment to their users. Unlike Sony who releases new cameras instead of firmware. Also, I do mostly video work, and not as much photo. This camera does amazing for the little bit of editorial photography I still do. However, I also have a GFX 100 ii that I like more for editorial and portrait photography work. The next version of this camera will need to have some massive improvements because I see myself keeping this for 5+ years. Or, if Nikon releases cinema cameras that are between these and the RED lineup, then that could sway my decision too. All in all, AMAZING camera 4.5 Stars!

The perfect combination for wildlife
||Posted . Owned for 4 months when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Recently upgraded from my Nikon D7500 to the Z8 and it has completely changed my wildlife photography game. The autofocus is blazing fast and incredibly accurate — birds in flight, small mammals, or fast-moving subjects are all tracked effortlessly. My keeper rate has skyrocketed, even in tricky lighting or dense backgrounds. The eye and animal detection AF feels leagues ahead of older DSLRs. As a long-time D850 admirer, I can confidently say the Z8 is a worthy successor — it keeps the same legendary image quality and rugged feel, but adds mirrorless speed, precision, and silence (a huge plus for shy wildlife). The 90% AF coverage across the frame means I can compose freely without worrying about missed focus. My existing F-mount Nikon 200-500 performs beautifully with the FTZ adapter. If you shoot wildlife and are considering the jump from DSLR to mirrorless, the Z8 is absolutely worth it. It’s fast, intuitive, and reliable — a true field companion that simply delivers more keepers. The 45 megapixel sensor is the perfect for cropping wildlife photos without losing details. It has the perfect combination of features for wildlife. Though the Z6 III offers similar features, the sensor size is a downside for wildlife. The only downside is the price range, is a little on the higher side for any hobbyist photographer.

STUNNING
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nikon Z8 is an impressive camera that has exceeded all my expectations. Its performance is outstanding, with stunning image quality and fast, precise autofocus. The 45.7-megapixel resolution captures incredibly sharp details, even in low-light conditions. Additionally, its ergonomic and well-designed body makes it comfortable to hold during long photography sessions. The 8K video recording is another big plus, offering cinematic quality. Without a doubt, the Z8 is a powerful tool for both professional photographers and enthusiasts. It’s a camera that truly has it all!

Best camera I’ve ever had.
||Posted . Owned for 3 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Versatile powerhouse right here! I’ll mainly review this camera from a video maker perspective which is what I mainly do. I mainly work with HDR videos and Nikon Z8 has provided me with full capabilities to make delicate HDR videos. With 12 bit NRaw and blog color tone which uses rec. 2020, I can shoot in up to 8.3K 60fps or 4.1K 120fps. The only thing is the storage card(CFExpress type B) can be pricey to store 8K videos, as 1TB can only store 23 minutes of 8.3k 60fps videos. Also to edit you’d need a powerful pc or Mac. Currently only Davinci resolve supports Nikon nraw I believe but it definitely does a good job on handling the nraw video, and you can def shoot in pro res or H.265 if that fits your needs. Auto focus is on par, I’ve never had an issue with it while shooting videos on either stationary landscapes or moving objects. Also I heard Nikon also pushes update through firmware, when I bought it, this machine is on 2.01. For time lapse, you can change the color tone to HLG and you can get 8K 30fps of HDR video directly which is just way more convenient for me. The video quality out of this thing is just magnificent. Very happy with my purchase.

Nikon Z8: A Masterpiece of Modern Mirrorless
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Nikon Z8 feels like a precision instrument disguised as a camera, and from the first click, it makes its intent clear. At the heart of the Z8 is a 45.7-megapixel stacked CMOS sensor paired with Nikon’s EXPEED 7 processor, a combination that delivers speed, clarity, and reliability without compromise. The result is a camera that reacts almost before you finish thinking. Autofocus is where the Z8 truly flexes its muscles. With deep-learning powered subject recognition and class-leading eye detection for people, animals, and birds, focus acquisition is instant and sticky. Eyes are tracked confidently even in low light or complex scenes, and once locked, the camera simply does not let go. It feels less like operating a camera and more like collaborating with one. The absence of a mechanical shutter is not just a technical curiosity, it’s transformative. Silent shooting, zero shutter shock, and blackout-free viewing create a shooting experience that feels fluid and uninterrupted. Combined with burst speeds up to 20 fps in RAW and far higher in JPEG, the Z8 captures decisive moments with surgical precision. In hand, the Z8 exudes confidence. The build quality is unmistakably professional, weather-sealed, dense, and reassuring without feeling cumbersome. The grip is excellent, controls fall naturally under the fingers, and the camera feels balanced even with larger Z-mount lenses. It is a body designed for long sessions and demanding conditions. Image quality is exceptional. Dynamic range is expansive, colors are natural yet rich, and files retain impressive detail even when pushed in post. Whether shooting portraits, action, or low-light scenes, the Z8 delivers images that feel polished straight out of the camera. The Nikon Z8 is not just powerful on paper, it’s cohesive in practice. Every feature feels purposeful, every performance gain tangible. Nikon didn’t simply create a smaller Z9, they refined it into a camera that feels agile, intelligent, and uncompromising. The Z8 is more than a tool. It’s Nikon at its most confident, a camera that earns its place in your hands every time you press the shutter.

Outstanding Camera – A True Flagship in a Compact
||Posted . Owned for 2 weeks when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I recently purchased the Nikon Z8, and it has exceeded my expectations in every way. This camera truly delivers flagship performance in a smaller, lighter body, making it ideal for both professional work and serious enthusiasts. The image quality is exceptional—the 45.7 MP stacked CMOS sensor produces stunning detail, excellent dynamic range, and impressive low-light performance. Autofocus is incredibly fast, accurate, and reliable, especially for moving subjects. The subject detection (people, animals, birds, vehicles) works flawlessly and makes capturing sharp images effortless. The video capabilities are equally impressive. The Z8 offers high-end video features without overheating concerns, making it suitable for extended shoots. The colors are natural, the footage is sharp, and the overall video performance rivals dedicated cinema cameras. Build quality is solid and weather-sealed, giving confidence when shooting outdoors. The ergonomics are well thought out, and the controls feel intuitive—especially for anyone familiar with Nikon’s professional lineup. Despite its power, the camera remains comfortable to hold and easy to carry for long shooting sessions. Overall, the Nikon Z8 is a remarkable camera that combines speed, resolution, and reliability into one package. It’s a worthy investment for photographers and videographers who want uncompromising performance without the bulk of a traditional flagship body. Highly recommended!

1 year later, would buy it again
||Posted . Owned for 1 year when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. As I pondered which lens system I should invest in, I considered Sony, took a close look at Canon. I needed an "A" camera as a documentary filmmaker that would shoot in 8k (for cropping purposes), had excellent glass, and had the promise of decent firmware updates. The Sony options were smaller, but more expensive. Canon had overheating problems. I liked Nikon's hybrid approach to video and photography, and subsequent firmware updates have really improved on the camera's OS and functionality. After extensive use, I appreciate the sensor shield (no dust), the viewfinder (I shoot often in manual), and battery life. I've customized everything to meet my needs. I wish it came with 2 CF slots instead of 1, but I shoot with a 2 TB card, and the N-RAW 8k files have recorded flawlessly to it, along with the backup 1080p ones, The SD backup for photos is nice to have. I carry a couple of off-brand batteries when in the field. It could be lighter, it could be smaller, but it has absolutely everything I need when I'm in the field. Still the best choice for me after a year of ownership. P.S. I learned to edit in Davinci Resolve Studio to manage the 8k files. Wasn't much of a hardship as I now prefer it to Final Cut Pro.

Amazing camera for stills and video
||Posted . Owned for 1 month when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This camera is amazing and nothing comes close at this price point. The body is sturdy and feels great in my hands. There are so many settings but it's very customizable to work they way you do. Nikon has updated the firmware since it first came out and has been adding even more features. Autofocus is lightning fast and accurate. Works great on a gimbal as well for smooth video. Built in wifi and bluetooth. Only thing missing is built in GPS, although it can pull location from your phone through bluetooth. If you are going to be doing N-log video, prepare to spend another $100-200 on a fast memory card.

Fantastic camera - highly recommend
||Posted . Owned for 1 week when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Purchased this for my wife for Christmas to bring her into the Mirrorless world. Had preformed The 180-600 for her as well after the 200-500 had some issues in Scotland this summer. Personally I switched from my Sony A1 this year to Nikon mostly to get into a 800mm lens and I was tired of the costly express a cards. Seeing the Z9 in action and knowing then Z8 is almost the same in a smaller body, you can’t go wrong. Some days I wish I had the smaller size of the Z8 when traveling but love the vertical grip of the Z9 after having it for a year. Eitherway for the price and specs on this camera you can’t go wrong with this camera. Though the cost on it is not cheap, nothing these days are. Yes it may not shoot 40fps like the canon r6ii but have to be honest at 20fps, the amount of pictures you can capture give you far enough choices. If not spin the unit to 30 or 60fps in jpeg and blow through some frames. Add to the fact you can use an sd cards and the D850 batteries and express b, this was a good choice by Nikon. Unless something happens with the body unexpectedly, this will be my wife’s camera for the next decade (sorry Nikon, even going to a global shutter at some point, the maturity of the stacked BSI won’t be a draw to change).
