I've been shooting with the Nikon D850 for several years, and I finally upgraded to the Z8 a few days ago. As a wildlife photographer, 20 frames per second, silent shooting, a blackout-free viewfinder, and pre-capture were all important to me. Most of all, the subject detection/tracking makes a world of difference when photographing birds in flight. I have quite the collection of F-mount lenses which I have no desire to replace, so I picked up the FTZ adapter as well. It works perfectly! In fact, some of them work even better thanks to this camera's in-body image stabilization and the improved autofocus technology. So far, the only downsides are minor: 1) the electronic viewfinder doesn't feel as "real" as my DSLR's optical viewfinder. 2) battery life is a fraction of my D850's. 3) after about 30 seconds, the camera goes to sleep to save battery. Unlike my DSLR, the z8 takes a second to wake up when you're ready to take a picture. This isn't ideal in certain wildlife settings when you need to react quickly. Overall, though, the pros far outweigh the cons and I highly recommend this camera. Image quality and resolution aren't any better than my D850, but the improved technology -- especially subject detection -- is a real gamechanger for wildlife photography.

This is hands down the best camera I’ve used in the 40 years I’ve been shooting photos. It is sturdy and the ergonomics are near perfect. All the main controls are easily accessible with one hand. The autofocus is fast and accurate with all my lenses and the frame rate is incredible.

! I recently purchased the Nikon Z8, and I can confidently say it’s one of the most powerful and versatile cameras I’ve ever used. Nikon has really outdone itself with this one—it’s like having the flagship Z9 in a more compact, manageable body without sacrificing performance. The image quality is stunning. The 45.7MP sensor captures incredibly detailed shots with beautiful dynamic range and color accuracy. Low-light performance is exceptional, and the autofocus system is lightning-fast and incredibly smart—face, eye, and even animal detection works flawlessly. What truly impressed me is how well it handles both photography and video. For video shooters, the 8K and 4K options with Nikon’s advanced color science make it a serious contender for hybrid creators. And the build quality is rock solid—rugged, weather-sealed, and ergonomically designed for long shoots. I also appreciate the dual card slots, the high-res EVF, and the intuitive menu system. It just feels right in the hands, and it’s clear Nikon listened to its users when designing the Z8. If you’re serious about photography or content creation, the Z8 is absolutely worth the investment. It’s a professional-grade tool in a body that doesn’t weigh you down. Highly recommended—5 stars!
