A Return to Form for the Coens
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review."No Country for Old Men" is a real return to form for writer/directors Joel and Ethan Coen, whose three most recent movies (an unamusing remake of "The Ladykillers," the aggressively unfunny "Intolerable Cruelty" and the stylish but pointless "The Man Who Wasn't There") pale in comparison to their early masterworks (the contemporary noir of "Blood Simple" and "Fargo," the surrealist black humor of "Barton Fink," and the very offbeat hijinks of "Raising Arizona" and "O Brother, Where Art Thou?"). Adapted from the novel by Cormac McCarthy, "No Country for Old Men" has one of the most basic crime-thriller plots imaginable: Josh Brolin finds a lot of money at the site of a drug deal that went very wrong, wants to keep it, but is pursued by the drug cartel's psycho hitman (Javier Bardem) and a crusty sheriff (Tommy Lee Jones). What makes the movie special is the way the Coens show us each character's state of mind -- Brolin's quiet desperation, Bardem's quiet relentlessness and Jones' quiet professionalism -- in a movie with many lengthy dialog-free but almost unbearably tense scenes. Bardem is excellent as the low-key but lethal Chigurh, a guy who definitely knows how to make the most of a compressed-air tank. His encounter with a gas station proprietor early in the movie is a marvel of malevolent minimalism: a blood-chilling conversation about nothing more than a proposed coin toss. Supporting actors Kelly Macdonald, as Brolin's unsettled but quietly authentic wife, and Woody Harrelson, a "cleaner" dispatched by the drug cartel to corral the possibly gone-rogue Bardem, are as good as the main players. The only noteworthy flaw with the movie is the Coens' baffling and frustrating decision not to show us the fate of a main character onscreen. Letting something that important happen off-camera was an inexplicably bizarre storytelling choice. Also, some audience members may feel cheated by the way the movie ends, because things are not exactly tied up in a justice-is-served, life-affirming fashion. Welcome to the real world, people. Sometimes, all a guy can do is sit and stare in hopeless helplessness at a world gone mad.

get it
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.i see what the coen brothers are trying the accomplish, by making every violent scene very silent and that worked and helped it out a lot. it added some extra suspence even it there was nothing going on. a lot of people complained about the ending, but i like it. it had a quiet and and peaceful ending that noone even thought to expect. and sure almost everything might go wrong in the story, but that just tells you that josh brolin and tommy lee jones arent the big unrealistic action guys that most movies are made of these days. i like josh brolin a lot in this and tommy lee jones is perfect as the western sherrif, but javier bardem cuaght my eye completely. hes so cold and vicious in this and the eiry silence in his scenes makes everything so much more intense. the cinametography is great also. but this wasnt best picture of 07 in my point of veiw. american gangster was and it didnt even get nominated. overall, this is a classic violent and gritty take on the drama/suspence genre.

Almost Perfect
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Coen brothers have created three masterpieces to date: Miller's Crossing, Fargo, and O'brother where art thou?. This movie falls just short of those perfect 10s, with about a 9.3. The first 90 minutes or so of this movie is absolutely perfect, an example of flawless cinema. Then the Coen brothers slam the viewer through a jarring left turn. What the viewer wants to happen, does not. Then the viewer is led down a confusing enigmatic alleyway. Anger and frustration ensue. Darn the Coen brothers! What are they thinking? Well, their thinking a lot more than most Americans, which explains why so many Americans despise the ending. The ending will resonate for days and weeks in the brain of an intelligent person and eventually make sense. The problem is most viewers want immediate gratification, not a multi-layered puzzle that requires one's grey matter to burn calories. My only complaint is that once the viewer understands why the movie unravels the way it does, there is still a stinging feeling of dissatisfaction. That's probably the intent. Bravo Joel and Ethan, Bravo.

Good movie
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Pretty good movie, but the trailer is misleading. At first, the movie seems pretty anti climatic, and dry (no music). The end will confuse you if you don't understand what the movie is about. There are certain events that seem major to the storyline that are not really focused on, which irritated me, until I started to see what was really being told. The story really isn't about the guy that finds 2 million in drug money, or about the bad guys trying to find him. The story is about a small town sheriff coming to grips with a new type of criminal that the world is producing. Keep that in mind when watching the movie, and the end will make more sense. There are a lot of gory scenes. Not a movie for kids, not a movie for someone looking for an action flick, pretty deep for movies of today's standard.

A Coen Classic
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a very dark thriller from the get go.It peaks your interest without letting you turn away from the screen.Every scene is shot with the most perfect detail of how the movie should be viewed. The cast is one of the best assembled. With Tommy Lee Jones as sheriff Ed Bell, and Josh Brolin as Llewelyn Moss the main character. The plot is very well put together as you have the feeling of the villain(Javier Bardem) getting ever closer to killing the main character. The ending could have been better. But it's still a Coen Classic.

Great Movie!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.5-stars for the quality of the film itself and 5-stars for the quality of the blu-ray. No complaints from me. I particularly appreciate Deakins' photography as large segments of this film are practically silent, making the cinematography the centerpiece. Say what you will about the content of the film itself. Some will find it a bit disturbing or overbearingly conveying a negative view of humanity itself but at least this is an experience that affects you; makes you reflect. This film is completely a worthwhile experience in my opinion.

Haunting and brilliant film
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This film won four major 2007 Oscars (Best Picture, Directors, Supporting Actor, and Adapted Screenplay), and deservedly so. It's the haunting story of Llewelyn Moss, a lower-class Texan whose life is torn apart when he finds a bag full of drug money at the scene of a gang massacre. A cat-and-mouse game ensues between him, the local sheriff, and Anton Chigurh, a sociopathic hit man who leaves a trail of death everywhere he goes. The film's themes of death and fate make this a must-see, unforgettable film.

Great film
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This has got to be one of the best films I've seen in a very long time. The acting, direction, and production are superb. The subject matter is more than a little dark and the film definitely earns its R rating. Tommy Lee Jones delivers an excellent performance as a small town west Texas sheriff, and Javier Bardem's performance is absolutely classic. Some people really hate the ending to this movie, but I personally think it was perfect commentary and suited the story quite well. It's grim, darkly funny, exciting, and exceptionally well-paced. Great film. Make no mistake, however, this is NOT a family night movie. Check it out.

WHAT A FILM THIS IS
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. The Coen Brothers make the greatest deadpan thrillers and comedies in cinema history. We have Fargo, Raising Arizona, O Brother Where Art Thou, The Big Lebowski, Blood Simple, Miller's Crossing, and Barton Fink. I am a huge fan of their work, can't wait to see their new film, Burn After Reading. "What's the most you've ever lost on a coin toss?" Such a good movie, saw it twice in the theater. Own it on DVD and Blu Ray.

A really AWESOME movie!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I thought this movie was going to be boring, but I was surprised. Anton Chigur is the coldest, most relaxed killer I have ever seen! If you like Quentin Tarantino movies, you will probably like this! The story is simple: guy loses his money, and wants it back, but someone else found it and wants to keep it! This is a MUST SEE movie! After watching this at a friends house, I'm heading to Best Buy to purchase my own copy. If I borrow it, I won't give it back! HIGHLY RECCOMEMDED!

Yay Symbolism!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Great movie on face value but so much more. The Coen brothers are known for deep symbolism and nearly every aspect of this film can be interpreted. Even you do not understand the symbolism its a wonderful film, but this is a good one to purchase and watch more then once. I think many get turned off with this film because of the ending. I won't give it away but in my opinion it could not have ended any other way, and those who are attracted to more then just shinny things will appreciate the art. This film has made my list of favorites.

An unconventional masterpiece
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. No Country for Old Men is a well-directed film about a man who goes on the run after taking money from the scene of a drug deal gone bad, the man who pursues him, and the sheriff of the town in which the drug deal occurred. The film employs some great tonal shifts and does not bend from what it needs to be in order to convey its themes properly. A masterpiece. The blu-ray offers excellent picture and audio, but is light on the extras.

big award winner
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Anything that has Tommy Lee Jones, I'll at least give it a shot. Add a few 'Oscars', and I'll definitely see it. To sum it all up, this film was outstanding. 10 out of 10 stars, two thumbs up, high recommendations, etc. As for the cast, Javier Bardem plays one of the baddest and meanest dudes in a movie that I have seen in a while. And, his acting is pure perfection. I actually found myself rooting for him, even though he's the bad guy.

Very interesting
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I seen this movie about a week ago and I was actually blown away by how it was. If you like interesting movies then you have to check this out.Im pretty sure you will like it. The only bad thing is sometimes your kind of confused at parts but then I think you will get it. And the only other complain is the end. But like others have said I guess that's what the book is for.But either way I think it's worth checking out. B+ is the grade I would give it.

Best film of 2007
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.'No Country' couldn't be a better film. Another hit from the Coen brothers. This movie has some of the best open scene shots i've ever seen. The acting from Javier Bardem is chilling, one of the best villains in movie history. The writing from the Coens is top-notch, and follows very closely with the novel by Cormac McCarthy. And the ending is perfect, for anyone who says it isn't.

Glitches until blu-ray is plugged directly to wall
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Movie was glitching every few seconds on me so I returned it. The next one did the same thing so I read online and I plugged the blu-ray player directly into the wall instead of through the power strip and the movie played smoothly after that. Sounded really stupid to me at first, thought maybe it wasn't processing the movie fast enough, but it worked.

5 star film / 4 star blu-ray transfer
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. One of the best by the Coen's - impeccably acted - Tommy Lee Jones: his best along with Lonesome Dove and the Fugitive. Javier Bardem is excellent, as well as Josh Brolin. The transfer however I expected to be better, its not at all bad, but I was expecting a sharper image being a newer film compared to the DVD. However I am not disappointed. For the $4.00 price tag it was a fantastic bargain.

Great Film
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This is a great movie with three great characters. The main villian in the film has a unique weapon of choice. I enjoyed this movie all the way up until the end. The movie felt like it was building up to something, and that somehting never came. Even though the ending was disappointing it is still a great film, and a great buy.
