    Great performance, terrible fingerprint sensor

Fast processor, plenty of memory and storage, no bloatware, very nice screen, awesome camera, but the on screen thumbprint sensor is terrible. One has to press very hard, and takes several tries. Phone is great if you do not need a fingerprint sensor, but if you do need one, look elsewhere.

I bought this phone and the first time I went to use the camera I got an error message. I now get this error message multiple times a day. I'm unable to view my pics because the photo apps automatically closes after a few seconds of being opened. I now have a brand new phone that I spent over $400 for that i'm unable to use the camera and photo apps. Nokia customer service was useless! What am I suppose to do now?!

Significantly Better than I was Expecting

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I went into my purchase of the Nokia 9 with tempered expectations. I read the "professional" reviews that harped on the camera and fingerprint sensor. But I really needed something to replace my Galaxy S8 and my previous month experience with the Galaxy S10+ was underwhelming and frustrating. So I ignored the reviews and gave the Nokia 9 a shot....and I am extremely glad I did! First off, if you're into blue (I am), the phone is beautiful. It has a classic design with bezels on the top and bottom. In the age of notches and full face displays with camera holes, it may seem passé...but it doesn't bother me and I think I like it more than the S10+ look. The phone is heavier than most of the recent ones I've used, but not bigger. It's just more dense and reminds me of older Nokia phones that were built like tanks. My initial two days of use with the phone were in stark opposition of my first two days with the Galaxy S10+. Rather than disappointment, I was constantly surprised at how good the Nokia 9 was for my use case and at less than half the price! Rather than wax philosophically about the past two weeks, here are some of the things that stood out to me: 1. Best outdoor display I've used since Nokia's old Windows Phones. I could easily see the phone in direct sunlight. 2. Clean build of Android with only one extra app provided by HMD/Nokia. I was able to personalize the phone the way I wanted it and use whatever app I cared to use. No artificial limitations like some other manufacturers. 3. I've not seen anyone else mention this but I had significantly better reception with the Nokia 9 compared to the Galaxy S10+. Places where I had little to no signal with the Galaxy were no problem for the Nokia. 4. Battery is MUCH better than I was expecting. I can easily go all day with 50% remaining. The Galaxy was better in this respect, but all the reviews I read complained about the size of the battery...but I'm not sure if they actually used it to see how long it lasts. 5. I'm not a pro photographer, but the camera has been great to me so far. Quick and easy to use. The dreaded "processing" message doesn't really impact me (likely because I don't take pictures and instantly try to edit them). I do wish there was a two stage camera button like the old Lumia's...but can't have everything we want. It can't be all puppies and unicorns, there are a few things that aren't quite great about the 9: 1. No SD Card support. The 128GB storage capacity is probably all I'll ever need...but it would be nice to have a safety blanket. 2. Why couldn't they put in dual front facing speakers? There's bezel...use it! The single speaker is good, but could have been much better. 3. No headphone jack. Enough has been said about this. All in all I've been delighted since moving from the Galaxy S10+ to the Nokia 9 (and my wallet has been as well)! Its capabilities far exceed its shortcomings. Time will tell how well it holds up but for now, I'll just keep smiling every time I look at it. I just hope there are others like me who ignore the professional reviews and give this phone the chance is deserves. You never know, you may as delighted as I have been!

Great phone with a great camera, and flagship phone specs for a really good price. The only issue I've came across with this phone is the in display fingerprint scanner seldom works. Becomes very frustrating, as you need to press your finger multiple times to unlock your phone. I've set up my finger print multiple times to get a better result, but it hasn't worked.

Although the design and screen layout might look outdated without a notch, the build quality and blue body with silver lining make the phone look expensive. Haven't tried the camera enough but the pro mode looks great. Display resolution and colors are awesome. Day-to-day usage is seamless with the 845. I don't game on phones or run other performance heavy apps, so can't say much. Sad, that fingerprint sensor doesn't work 75-80% of the times I try to unlock using that.

Amazing photo quality with a few adjustments

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

I generally don't write reviews (too lazy) but felt bad seeing some people slam the photos from this phone due to what is mostly an easily remediable issue (ridiculous ISO in default auto mode). - First off, touch unlock works 100% perfectly for me. Not sure why it does for me and not for others, maybe because I'm not using face unlock which I read can interfere? Or maybe because I was already using optical (not ultrasonic) finger scanning on my laptop and so am already used to being more careful and patient with it. Or maybe there is another software or hardware issue others have? - Daytime photos look natural and crisp even out of auto-mode JPGs. None of that pumped-up saturation and contrast I've seen from other phone cameras - Low light and high-dynamic range photos generally often look terrible using default auto-mode, in both JPG and RAW. For whatever reason the phone loves to blast ISO to 6400 in a heartbeat and even the five-sensor technology can't overcome that right now. I found that in all but near-pitch black situations, setting ISO to a more reasonable 1600 and a still-doable 1/30 shutter speed (even 1/15 in a pinch) led to MUCH better and often amazing results (especially with RAW and after processing in Lightroom). Hopefully Nokia issues an update fast to cap the overly aggressive ISO - In near pitch black, I haven't been able to get good photos no matter what the settings. Rather than noise, they're just muddy, even via RAW. My 1-inch sensor camera can resolve these situations far better -- noisy but detail is retained. I'm hoping Nokia/Light can improve the software algorithm (maybe through stacking?) to improve on this front. This is disappointing but probably ok, since how often am I taking pictures in near pitch black where I can't see in front of me? - I'm amazed how far we've come in a few years with smartphone processors, but loading, tweaking, and resaving a RAW right on the phone itself (in the Lightroom Android app) takes as little as five seconds all in. Compared to several minutes on my previous three year old phone! So for me, shooting and processing in RAW seems no big deal for those challenging low-light and HDR shots. In the time I spent writing this review I could've processed a hundred shots right on the phone... - I haven't played around much with the bokeh and post-shot focus but from what I've seen so far it seems to work well, bokeh looks gradual and believable. And it's kind of incredible to be able to set focus and adjust the bokeh level after the fact.

Well let me start off by saying I am a phone junky. I have bought and tested pretty much all the flagships available since 2017,and while i am a fan of the "full screen bezeless display" phones that are out most have a compremise in a area. and While I will say the bezels are "chunky" but doesn't bother me. the screen is a great size for me (6-6.5" is my sweet spot) and the design is simple and elegant. now the cameras are Fantastic the camera is the deal breaker for me on most phones. this camera setup has taken some fantastic pictures a dynamic range that i haven't seen. plus the ability to use lightroom is a huge plus to me. i know that all the other reviews on this phone knock the fingerprint sensor ,but for me it has worked fine only a few misreads. So overall i am very very pleased with this phone, so pleased this is my first phone review i have done. so dont expect a physical type fingerprint response if looking at this phone since the in display tech is still relatively new,and you will be pleased with this gem of a phone. Welcome back Nokia and thank you to HMD for resurrecting them.

This phone is awesome. Very smooth and fast Android experience. This phone is very very fast. WiFi and network strength is very good. Loved the camera. It takes great photos. Little bit take time to process photos after I take, and front camera is also little bit slow to take photo, but they are going to send new update for camera soon. Fingerprint scanner is not doing good, but I'm okay with it (90% time work), but They are going to send new update to fix fingerprint scanner as well. BUT there is facelock or pin lock. Phone looks so stylish and premium. Screen is so beautiful and bright.

I have been a long time Nokia fan. I think this is adequate for what I need right now but it does need some major improvements. The processing power is extremely weak, the phone keeps crashing, cannot find camera error numerous times, and fingerprint scanning problems (however my wife suggested making a few verification accounts with the same finger) this seems to resolve the fingerprint scanning issue. Works about 80 percent of the time now. Overall I really like the phone but needs major updates to improve the speed, reduce crashes and errors.

    Good camera, terrible phone

I bought the Nokia 9 as a solution to having a great camera/smartphone in one device (no need to bring a separate DSLR camera). Unfortunately, the "phone" part is terrible. You have probably read about the "fingerprint reader" issues. I have reset the phone numerous times, spent $$$ on all types of screen protectors (as well as trying to use NO screen protector), updated the phone, deleted all apps and installed back one at a time, etc., etc. Nothing makes a difference, it was a total waste of my time. The speaker is poor, the glass that covers the display is somewhat tinted & very reflective which makes it useless outside in bright sunlight. The front camera "overexposes" just about everything. AND while the rear camera can take exceptional photos there are numerous bugs in the software that make it a poor experience overall. At this point I can't return it to BB (although I would gladly pay the 35% restocking fee). Just a major disappointment. PS- I bought a Pixel 3A XL from BB a few days ago and it does everything I wanted this phone to do at a much better price point (a few concessions made as I probably would have bought the more "premium" Pixel 3 XL if I had the $600 back I spent on the Nokia 9).

The camera is disappointing. It is unusable in real life. It takes 10 seconds between shots. I understand that it needs time to process the picture, but it's unacceptable. Camera crashes frequently. The pic quality is hit and miss. The fingerprint sensor was horrendous initially. After contacting Nokia through the phone app they advise me to update the phone. After that was a bit better. I return it to BB after a week.

    How did it pass QA

    Posted .
This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.

    1. Good specs but last years cpu. 2. Short on RAM. 3. Unbelievably fantastic camera. 4.Unusable finger print scanner. I would consider myself an early adopter in hardware and software. I switched from an essential PH-1 to this Nokia. My day job is SQL server developer and data science. Used the phone 1 day and could not deal with 85% failure of the finger print scanner. It makes 0 sense on why Nokia would release the phone with this terrible hardware. It would have been impossible to pass qa unless nokia is just trying to beat out market deployment time. I chatted with Nokia as soon as I discovered the problems, because I though I had bad hardware. I could not believe it would perform so poorly. Their response to me was so bad that I had a hard time believing I was actually not being punked on a TV show. They wanted me to wipe the phone and run it in safe mode. Their official response was to Uninstall everything. I was really upset. But, I performed a factory reset and tried the phone with only the pre-installed software. I took the phone to Best Buy and the person at the register had the same problem as I did with the non responsive finger print scanner. I then started looking online for reviews and discovered that every single review on the phone raves about the camera and says the finger print scanner doesn't work. That tells me that it is absolutely a design flaw. Nokia's cto and engineers should really think about how bad this will look in the market. They should remember how blackberry and HTC is no more. Enough about my review, take a look at their instructions. >>> Perhaps the cause of the problem is the third-party applications that you recently installed. To find out if this is the case, start the device in safe mode, in which only preinstalled applications work! Tip: In safe mode, some widgets from the main screen will be deleted. Take a screenshot so that later it is easier to restore them. - Press and hold the Power button. - In the window that appears, select and hold "Power off". The device will restart in safe mode. An inscription about this will appear at the bottom left of the screen. After going into safe mode, use the device as usual. Check if the problem has disappeared. Remember that only preinstalled applications are available to you. If the problem no longer occurs, the downloaded application probably causes the problem. To find it, follow these steps: 1. Restart the device. 2. Start deleting recently downloaded applications one at a time. After each removal, reboot the device and check if the problem has disappeared. 3. When the device starts working normally, you can re-install those applications that did not cause problems. Tip: Record the names of the applications you are deleting. So it will be easier for you to restore them. To return to normal mode, restart the device. - Press and hold the power button for a few seconds. - Select "Restart". If there is no such option, hold the power button for about 30 seconds until the device reboots. In safe mode, some widgets from the main screen will be deleted. In normal mode, you can add them again.
