The boom box for the new millenium

While I was at first very surprised at its size, I am very pleased with the Nyne Rebel speaker and definitely think it is well worth its form factor for the amazing and powerful sound that the unit delivers. As for usability, it is VERY simple and straightforward to use: it automatically goes into pairing mode if a device that hasn't been paired with it is not in the area, so to switch phones/devices you simply put the paired device in airplane mode and pair the new one. The battery lasts a LONG time as well. We used the speaker for several hours a day for several days in a row before we needed to charge it back up again. It's also great that you can quickly see how much battery life remains with a press of a button. All in all I think this comes as close as you'd like to a great boom box for the new millenium, We found it very useful while sitting out on the screened porch, around a campfire and on a pontoon boat. I highly recommend this device to any looking for a great sounding semi-portable speaker and secondary power supply.

Great Backyard Speaker, Not so much for Travel

The Nyne Rebel is a beast of a speaker. It definitely has the rugged outdoor device look going for it, so unlike many in this market, isn't designed to augment or blend into the looks of things around it. But it does a great job, with long battery life, bluetooth range, and great sound with the ability to keep devices charged, like the cell phone supplying the beats over bluetooth. The packaging came with a handy handle to carry the box around. Interestingly enough, the Rebel itself did not. While it does have a handle of sorts molded into the speaker, it took picking it up a few times to get the hang of holding on to it and not feeling like you may drop it if not paying attention. The Rebel has enough heft that it would have made sense to design a better handle or at least use coloring to make the existing one more obvious. Given that the speaker isn't exactly a work of art, such contrast to the paint job would probably have enhanced it's looks. The power adapter comes itself with various adapters to allow operation or charging in various locales around the world. Other speakers, typically smaller, use USB for power portability. The the Rebel's size, it needs it's own brick so it's good that with this travel speaker, you don't need to remember a separate travel adapter. Given the charing output over USB, it can then save you should you forget such an adapter to use with your phone or other USB devices. It also has aux-in input, so if you're willing to deal with slightly lower audio quality, that's an option to prolong the battery life of both the music player and the speaker. Pairing was a breeze using NFC to my android smartphone. I also used the manual bluetooth configuration to an iPhone which worked flawlessly. Bluetooth range was great, working through brick walls and a patio door. The audio controls on the speaker give you a pretty wide range of volume control. I was presently surprised and a bit confused initially, since it started out at the lowest setting where not hearing any music playback, I thought the speaker wasn't working - even though the sound was turned up pretty high via the controls on my phone. It also has aux-audio out which I supposed is designed to allow you to daisy chain multiple speakers. It seems, given the size and battery power of these devices, they could have the speakers just pair to each other over bluetooth. Having to carry around a 3.5mm male/male cable, likely 10+ feet long, so you could play music on multiple speakers (because it seems kinda pointless to have two of these any closer together) seems a bit unwieldy. Carrying the cable might be ok, but stringing things on the fly in an outdoors environment could be a pain. In all, it was a great portable speaker sound and battery wise. While it has features that speak to the "travel" nature of the design, the size probably means it's more for car trips where you have space to toss it in the trunk and will be camping or hanging out not too far from your vehicle. I don't see this being a speaker one takes on a trip that involves air travel or hiking. Given the size and weight, that may also mean it's left home even on a trip to the beach. It's a good idea, but may better serve the backyard BBQ niche or outdoor home theatre, in which case, bluetooth daisy chaining of speakers would make more sense to give you greater flexibility of wireless placement.

Disclaimer - I was given this speaker in exchange for my fair and unbiased review. TL;DR - the Nyne Rebel Bluetooth speaker is a great option for both those of us who are adventurous and for those of us who need a relatively tough speaker to take with us around the house. The soft-touch plastics feel great, the audio is crisp with strong bass response, and it's a great value for the price. It was larger than I expected it to be, but with audio, size is generally a tradeoff for sound quality. Expanded review: The Nyne Rebel Bluetooth speaker exactly what you want in a Bluetooth speaker for use outside or in the garage. It's large, it sticks out, it plays nice with your phone, and the battery life is pretty good overall. First, with unboxing, you'll find the unit easy to remove. It also comes with an accessory box that features its power supply (for charging and running off of AC power) with plugs for the US, Europe, Great Britain, and Australia (for international travelers). It also comes with a 3 foot (~1 meter) aux cord in the package, which can be useful for either connecting an audio device without Bluetooth (think classic iPod, portable CD player, or something similar) or connecting the line output to another speaker (Nyne recommends no more than 4 be connected to each other at one time). The only disappointment of this package was the instruction manual and warranty information; I expect something this expensive to have an actual book and not a folded sheet of paper as a manual. As for the unit itself, it's large. When I generally think of a Bluetooth speaker, I think about something the size of a brick. This unit eclipses pretty much any other portable Bluetooth speaker on the market, being that it's around 16 inches wide, 8 inches deep, and 6 inches tall. Where the typical unit is carry-on luggage, this will probably end up as checked baggage in your suitcase. It does have a rather striking design, however, between the soft-touch plastics and the metal speaker grill. But with size comes sound, and does this thing bring the sound. A dedicated woofer and stereo midranges and tweeters provide deep lows, clear vocals, and crisp highs. I tested with both my iPhone 6s and my Moto Z Play Droid edition, and both sounded phenomenal while playing tracks from Apple Music, Google Play Music, and Pandora over Bluetooth. Bass is punchy and downright powerful, especially for the size of the woofer. It also rarely distorted, no matter how loud I played music through it, be it The Weeknd's "The Hills", Van Halen's "Right Now", Darius Rucker's "Wagon Wheel", a recording of Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata", or Green Day's "Good Riddance". Dr. Dre's "The Chronic" sounded exactly how it should have at full blast - thumping bass and a solid beat, with enough power to shake my kitchen floor somewhat. Running on batteries only, I got around 5 hours at full blast and a little over 10 while closer to halfway (as set on my iPhone, not the speaker). The charger output is a 1 amp output, so while it'll quickly charge an iPhone 6s, it provides only enough power to keep an iPad running. All in all, this is a great speaker. Sure, it's big, but if you want loud, clean, and punchy, this is the speaker for you.

I am a sound snob so was worried about the sound quality of a new brand. Let me tell you, this thing has better quality for outdoor parties then my Bose or Big Jambox. I put this on our porch for a party of about 50 people and it sounded amazing. I also love that you can charge you phone from it since everyone came over with dead phones. It says 8-10 hours of life and even after charging phones it still had juice left after 8 hours of loud play. If you want a beach, pool or backyard speaker this is it. Forget beats and Bose. I was also not worried about rain or anyone spilling a drink on it. Handle is great. A little big but perfect for parties.

I have had a few bluetooth speakers that were meant for outdoors.. This is by far the best one I have had. It is the loudest and the most durable. I have had it out by the pool and it has gotten splashed and I have had not problems at all. It is easy to take a call through when you are listening to your music through your phone. It is very easy to pair to your devices and the battery has lasted for hours. I have never drained the battery during use even with charging a device off of it. It is a fun speaker to have outdoors!

The Nyne Rebel surprised us with impressive sound quality and respectable bass. It is easy to carry around, and being rechargeable, frees us from having to futz around with cords. We use it on our back patio, and had no problems maintaining a Bluetooth connection to the device controlling it. At first, I made the mistake of expecting subwoofer-quality bass, but the Rebel is a full-range speaker, and that range is quite good.

This thing booms! I 'm a big fan of the recent trend of making electronics splashproof and giving them some durability. Build: The Nyne Rebel is well made and a little heavier than it looks. The soft touch buttons feel solid and the battery LED indicators are nice and bright. I DO wish they were on the front and not hidden on the back, but at least there IS a battery indicator. Carrying handle feels well attached and speaker grills are made from heavy mesh that won't easily push in and damage the speakers. Use: I paired with my iPhone no problems. This speaker does have the option to use NFC, which is handy. Charging port is easy enough to plug in and feels solid. Sound: This thing is LOUD for it's size. I didn't think there was much to their distinction of this speaker being a "2.1" device, but it does matter that is internally applies a high pass filter tot he sounds coming from the woofer and a low pass filter tot he sounds coming from the mids and tweeters. When placed on a solid surface you can really hear resounding bass coming from the speaker. Battery life seemed close to the reported 8 hours from my use so far. I also liked that there was a charging port for my phones so I don't have to carry a separate battery backup if we're out on the boat all day. Sounds are not quite as good as any of my Bose stuff, but audibly better than my Jambox. I like this for a portable speaker that goes everywhere with you including on the boat, the pontoon, or the beach. well made and sturdy it should last for a long time with decent sound in a splashproof package.

This speaker rocks. Take into account that alot of bluetooth speaker manufacturers are going with smaller sizes now. The nyne rebel takes that and throws it out the window. You get deep bass and really good highs with this larger than normal speaker. It's splashproof and is great for the beach or pool. It comes with a handle for easy toting. You can also make bluetooth calls on this thing, if you'd like to speak to people thru a big ol' speaker. I haven't tried it yet but I'm sure it works as described. It paired up with several apple devices with no problems at all as expected and the signal seemed to make it as far as I could hear with out any distortion or connectivity issues. I have yet to try out NFC on this speaker. The only issue I had with the speaker was the aux out. I plugged in the aux out speaker to my bose soundlink and there was more of an echo sound than anything. The bose was slightly behind the nyne rebel. I would guess that if I had went with a straight 3.5 connection throughout instead of bluetooth to 3.5 it probably would've worked better. All in all this speaker is a hit. The feel of it reminds me of the huge Radio Raheem boom boxes from the 80's. It sounds soooo good! Highly recommend for anyone who doesn't mind having a larger speaker for a bigger sound.

When the Nyne Rebel arrived, I was shocked at the size weight. It is is just huge. When I turned it on, it went right into pairing mode and I paired it with my Ipad Pro in a few seconds. No issues whatsoever. The speaker has all the features you would expect - NFC, AUX, line out, latest Bluetooth ect. The build quality is solid , rugged in fact. Buttons are large and easy to use. Nice battery indicator. After that, things went down hill. Let’s review the pros and cons - Pros Water resistant. Nice handle to carry. Built like a tank. Power bank for phones Cons Too big and heavy Mid range is just not good, mostly highs and lows. For it’s size, I expected it to be louder. Smaller speakers have the same if not more sound power. I know 40 watts is 40 watts but there is just a difference. Needs an equalizer app. At low volumes, the sound is muddied. Speaker phone is below average. Unclear to me at times. Remember that sound quality is subjective to a point. To me, the sound , for lack of a better word, is hollow. Creative, UE and JBL to some extent just sound better to me and sound louder. I own or have owned all the competition, this speaker just does not have the warmth, mid range and clarity of some of the competition. I have owned some Sony speakers and found the sound comparable to them ( I did not care for them as well.) I almost feel that the rugged, "outdoor construction" somehow affects the sound in a negative way. I cannot say that definitively, it's just a thought. Is it built well – yes. Are the basics well thought out –yes. Would I recommend the speaker – no. This is an average speaker that just misses the mark for me.

I never expected the speaker was so big after taken it out of the box (even opening the box felt like high quality stuff). I am glad I took a chance on speaker brand that I have never heard of before as I would always go with Beats, Bose, JBL, or Sony. Most important, it only took 5 minutes to open and test the speaker; the sound is extraordinary. I think is better than Bose and the deep bass is even better than Beats. Being waterproof, dust proof, extra USB charge port, NFC ready, and even with extra AUX port is a plus in my book. Lastly, the AC plug comes with extra plug extensions for international AC compatiblility if you plan to bring the speaker outside of the US.

Got this for streaming music out by the pool - Simple and easy to set-up - Nice rich sound - Several ways to connect and stream music - Portable and lightweight with decent battery life Best of all, it is splash resistant!! It does not have a carrying handle, so put it in a location you want to use it at, and leave it. It is light enough and the battery has great life, so don't be afraid to move it to a better location

The Nyne Reble bluetooth speaker is an excellent speaker but it cannot be categorized as a portable speaker. The speaker itself weighs about 8 pounds and therefore its not good to carry around in your backpack. However because of its big size, it sounds great with clear, deep and crisp sound. The battery lasts me a good 8 hours on continuous use and I can also charge my phone through it. Recommend if you want to use it just on your desk

This speaker doesn't compare to my stereo setup, but it is very convenient. I love listening to my saved mp3s in the garage, in the garden, or doing lawn work. It is very portable, is easy to set up, and has good sound. There is a bit of background noise between songs, but I don't hear the noise once the music starts. I have to admit that I was startled by how much I enjoy having a portable speaker.

The Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Black can make music sound as great as it should. I can hear all of the instruments regardless of how faintly played. The quality of the emitted frequencies is great. The only problem that I have with it is the power output is not as great as it should be, based on the sturdiness and heaviness of the Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Black. I remember the boom boxes of the 1980’s that could catalyze an impromptu street party, because of how loud they played. The Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Black does not match that type of power output for its volume, but it is still a good speaker to have. Connecting via Bluetooth was a no brainer. As soon as I powered on the Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Black, the Bluetooth symbol began to flash. When I immediately went to my android’s device system settings and checked Bluetooth the Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker - Black was listed on the bottom. I tapped it and connected my device.

Meets requirements for good sound & portability!

Nyne - Rebel Portable Bluetooth Speaker In researching this I found a lot of "better than this" and "not better than this" comparisons, but the best test is to listen for myself and form my own opinion. I got this to use around my school (teacher) to provide some background music in the classroom and to set a positive mood for staff meetings. This is replacing an old "wired" stereo I have been using in my classrooms for many years - of course a wired system is going to be louder no matter what, but I was looking for something that was easier to set up and also a "portable" speaker to take along to staff meetings and to use by the pool on weekends. That's quite a list of needs and the bluetooth capability seemed to meet all the requirements. Setting up the speaker was very easy and no problem pairing with any of my bluetooth devices. For the sound itself, my first impression was that the sound was not as loud as expected (compared to a wired system so not a suprise) but when using the speaker I was impressed by how the sound filled the room. The music is easy to hear and the volume actually needs to be turned down some even in a room full of teenage students. It seems like the quality of the sound is very good, which means I don't need to turn it up full blast just to be able to fill the room with music. There is plenty of bass beat, but doesn't have the "thumping" that is popular these days, but drowns out the midrange and highs. Then I took the speaker to a staff meeting and got many compliments on the quality of the speaker and "where did you get that" and "how much was it" questions. The built-in handle is a nice feature, and reminds me of the "boom box" craze from many years ago when hipsters would carrry a cassette tape box on their shoulder and bop down the street. Welcome to the future where technology has improved and now the "boom box" is a bluetooth speaker playing from your phone! Everything changes, but everything remains the same. Battery life will vary depending on the volume, but I used the speaker non-stop from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm (9 hours) at "medium" volume, and the battery indicator only went from 5 lights to 3 lights - less than half the charge used in a full day of listening. Turning it up will draw more current, but I don't see any problem cranking it up all the way and still having a full day of listening. Being able to plug in a phone to keep the phone charged while playing is really nice, and should come in quite handy especially outdoors. There are many portable speakers on the market - some larger, and some smaller. This one seems right for me as it can be placed strategically in a room for best sound quality, easily moved to another location, including by the pool or on the back deck without having to worry about water damage, and big enough where I don't have to worry too much about it walking away in someone's backpack or pocket. Overall a good value with lots of uses and good sound quality. If you want smaller, get something smaller. If you want the thundering bass beat - get the Nyne "Rock" model and it will stir your tea for you. Otherwise, this is a good speaker that is small enough to move around, and large enough to provide good quality sound in a fairly large room.

I plan to use this portable Bluetooth speaker to play tunes on my front porch, where I spend a lot of time hanging out in the summer and early fall. It measures 15.8" x 9.75" x 6.75", so the size is not too small, but not unreasonably large either. It will fit on the bottom shelf of the wicker coffee table. I like the sturdy rubber “feet” on the bottom that will keep it positioned even when I am rocking out! The more I think about it, the more ways I can think of using the speaker – tailgating, camping, at the park, the beach, etc. It is a portable party! It only weighs 7.75 lbs and has a built-in carrying handle in the back. It advertises a 10 hour rechargeable battery (yay, no more buying disposable batteries). I have been using it at a moderate level for several hours and it is still going. There is a battery level indicator next to where you plug it in to check how much battery strength is left. Even better, the Rebel has a power bank to charge your mobile devices (phone/ipod) with a USB cord, even while it plays music. I need this because my phone goes through a charge very quickly. I read through the multiple folded manuals enclosed in the box. This was probably the worst instruction manual I have seen in a while. It was a huge piece of folded paper that was as complicated to refold as origami. It was next to impossible to find, let alone read, the directions in English with too small font and light print. Another odd thing about the Rebel was the inclusion 4 interchangeable worldwide plugs in the box. I looked up the company online and found that they have headquarters in California and China. I don’t know that I would pack the speaker to go on an international trip, so I guess that the plugs are to make the product more attractive to an international audience. Thankfully I didn’t need the directions to set up the speaker with my music. I easily connected to my iPod through a Bluetooth 4.0 connection. The NYNE Rebel comes with NFC one-touch connectivity. I confess I had to look up what NFC means. Here is what I learned: Near-field communication (NFC) is a set of communication protocols that enable two electronic devices, one of which is usually a portable device such as a smartphone, to establish communication by bringing them within 4 cm (1.6 in) of each other. I did a quick search on Google to confirm whether or not my Note 4 has NFC (it does) and where to check if NFC was activated (Settings, More). The speaker came with a 3.5 mm aux-in cable to use with the Audio in or Line out. That means you can hook up an mp3 player that doesn’t have Bluetooth, a microphone or karaoke, or you can daisy chain (connect more speakers) for an outdoor party. Another great feature of the NYNE Rebel is that it has a splash proof design. There are different “levels” of water resistance that are standard and the standard is referred to as IPX. The Rebel is IPX3 out of a scale of IPX0 to IPX8, which is pretty good. IPX3 Protected against spraying water: water spraying up to 60º from vertical at 10 liters per minute for 5 minutes at a pressure of 80-100kN/m2. In layman’s terms, IPX3 means it is protected against spraying water so in effect it is splash proof. It will be fine near the beach or a pool as long as in isn't immersed in water and sand won't cause any harm. There is a built-in microphone for hands-free calling (phone icon). I didn’t take a call through the speaker so I can’t speak to that. The speaker has a 2.1 System with two active drivers, two active tweeters and an active subwoofer. I am not an audiophile, but I know what I like and what I don’t like when I hear it when it comes to bass and treble levels. He thought it was okay but wasn’t too impressed. When his friends come over, they commented that they liked the sound. I really like this speaker and it will be worth its weight in gold as I discover new ways to use it. The unit typically sells for $179.99, but is on sale at Best Buy for $119.99, which I think is a great price for this unit. I would encourage everyone to go out and buy the NYNE Rebel. FYI - I looked online to see if there were any short videos of the NYNE Rebel. NYNE offers a 55 sec summary of the product’s best features https://nyne.com/product/rebel/.

I would recommend this to a friend
