Perfect Entry To VR Gaming

This could be the best entry level VR system you can get. Because of the inside out tracking through the cameras on the headset, There is almost no setup other than creating your play boundary. Tracking is pretty good, just remember that if the controllers are out of the cameras view, it will lose its position sometimes.
If I had to list it's flaws I only have 2. The sound is pathetic. It uses down firing speakers that aren't that good to begin with. You will definitely want to use headphones. I recommend behind the neck headphones since the VR headset makes regular headphones harder to use. I don't recommend earbuds since quick motion games will probably make them fall out.
Second the headset doesn't feel as high quality as other units. But don't let that put you off, it is still a wonderful headset
Extra tip: You may want to invest in a USB 3.0 and Display Port extension cables. The included cable is plenty long but I needed a bit more length

Great for getting into vr, can be a bit finnicky

I got this headset just around the start of this month and have already pumped 200+ hours into it going by actual playtime.
This is priced extremely competitively and if you're getting into vr without wanting to spend an overly-hefty sum of cash then either this or the quest will be your best bet. If you don't want to be tethered to your pc then go ahead and get a quest(plus you have the option of getting a (rather expensive)link cable for it if you later want to get into PCVR)
Due to inside-out tracking there are of course deadzones but the tracking is actually pretty dang well done and will try to guess where your controller might be around you with pretty good accuracy.
The oculus software itself can be rather odd and will act up but the headset itself is fine, no manual ipd adjustment though so if you're out of the average range in terms of ipd then you should look elsewhere as you will have an unsavory experience with this.
The actual speakers built into the headset are kinda eh(still work though) but I just use my headphones instead as it has a built in 3.5mm jack on the side.
If I could rate this in decimals then I'd say 4.5 easily.
Overall, has some cons that can be annoying to deal with but the actual experience of playing roomscale vr at an entry-point of $400(+tax and s&h) and a decent enough computer to support the rift s very well make up for those grievances.

Upgrades and downgrades

I had Oculus Rift CV1 (the first version) for one year, and due to that i instantly recognized some of the upgrades and downgrades that i'm gonna list here.
Upgrades:
- A far better image compared to his precursor, now i'm actually able to use a sniper rifle and see my opponent crisply through it.
- The inside-out cameras work perfectly 80% of the time, aiming with a pistol in Rift S is smoother like butter, no stutters anymore or these little drifts that the controller do due to the small lack of imprecision of the physical cameras.
- The controllers are a little bit more light than the CV1 version, which immerses you a little more in the Virtual Reality, because you forget that you're using controllers quicker now.
Downgrades:
- The controller halo is kinda annoying sometimes. I cannot aim properly in some games because i end up hitting my vr headset due to the way that i aim, with the hand that i'll shoot right below my chin, so the aim can be parallel with my eyes, and that's where my controller halo hits the vr headset. That's not THAT MUCH annoying, but sometimes it takes my immersion out, and due to the cameras right in the Headset itself i'm afraid that in the future i can hit some camera unconsciously and break it.
- The spots where the cameras are are just in the front part, and not in the back, so some archery games where i usually pull the string right behind my ear have been killed for me, because it lost the tracking when i do it and i end up losing an important stealth mission. The tip that i would give to you is to be quick in your archery, so you won't suffer the drift of your controller .
- The halo band that stays around your head is, at least for me, worse than the Velcro one that we use to have in CV1, i don't know, it just don't stick on my head properly, but that's a personal opinion and may be different for you, I've seen a lot of people saying that it was an improvement, so don't take this one too serious.
- The wrist bands of the controllers are the WORSE WRIST BANDS I EVER USED, it's kind of impossible to keep them tight to your wrist, they're constantly sliding and consecutively opening due to the material that they used on it, it's better than nothing, but it still a crap.
- Sometimes the battery compartment of the controller can open up due to the movements you're doing in game.
And that's the worse for me...
- There's no headphones on it, they have little speakers on each side, which i never used because i hated the idea and i don't want to bother the people that live in my house with the sounds that my game makes, so what i'm doing is getting my headphones and rolling all the cable up on the VR headset and doing it i can play without having cables swinging around or my house listening to what i'm playing, but for it to work is such a work around that shouldn't be necessary, because the CV1 had HEADPHONES and all the competitors have too, just the Rift S doesn't.
Final opinion:
It's a "good" headset, even though with some defects, just to think that i saved up to two or three usb ports that should've been used on static cameras, i think that's already worthy, in the overall everything works really well. I would recommend it for those people who don't have the courage to spend $1000 on Valve's VR. It's a practical VR, just connect the hdmi and usb and you're done, so due to the practical that would worth getting it.

When I purchased this headset, I heard a lot of people saying stuff like "It's not wireless, so it's trash" and "It's overpriced and has terrible specs!" these claims don't actually add up in person though. What you should know about most reviews (on Youtube) is that they are comparing it to a Valve Index, a headset that costs 2 and a half times more. The specs are decent with the screen having a 80hz refresh rate, I didn't notice this though it is good to know that I've only owned 60hz screens my entire life. The headband is comfortable and easy to use (Note: the band is NOT like the PSVR band, it isn't spring loaded so there is no real pressure squeezing your head). The main issues are with the software, sometimes it doesn't pick up the headset, or says it's plugged in when nothings there. If you have these issues unplug & replug and restart the software, then you should be good. The tracking is great to where in most gun & bow games tracking is never lost. The controllers are comfortable and take AA batteries (they last days even with heavy use). There are some things I recommend for you when buying any headset, but this one specifically.
Get a cable wrap, this will prevent damage to the cable from pulling during untangling (and stop tangling entirely!)
Don't use a pulley system, it will destroy your cable

gave four stars due to limitations (PC requirements). The Rift S has very good graphics and no problem with lag or skipping. The cable associated with the Rift S is long enough to give the range needed. Connected to youngest sons Gaming desktop ( I5 CPU with 1060 graphics) and had no problems at all. Bought Rift S for oldest son who has a Gaming laptop but is not compatible (Rift S uses display port, most laptops use HDMI). Package included converter for display to mini display (which most laptops do not have). Converters from HDMI to display adapter will not work for Rift S. Purchased Quest as a replacement and will be returning Rift S. If you have a desktop (suitably equipped) and don't mind the cord then this is an excellent VR.

Display Port sucks

This headset is basically a Playstation VR in terms of its build, but with more than double the resolution of it. The controls are great, and the headset works. Problem is, it does NOT support HDMI and it only supports display port. You don't realize how difficult it is to get that signal to relay properly without flickering until you buy this headset. The traditional oculus supported HDMI and VirtualLink, however this one does not support virtual link. I was very disappointed trying to connect this to hardware that ran oculus just fine.
The audio is built into the headset, and it sounds kind of low volume and lacking dynamics. Picture quality is good, controls are good. Refresh rate is 80 instead of 90hz like Gen 1 but resolution is higher. Pick your poison

Best bangforbuck hmd but BEWARE! NOT FOR EVERYONE

The rift s is hands down the best pcvr headset you can get with 350bucks. However, Oculus had made a terrible decision to get rid of the mechanical ipd adjustment and use a single lcd screen(obviously to cut down the price). If your ipd is around 62-65mm, you're in luck! You'll have no significant problems with this headset, so don't hesitate and buy it! This headset has better tracking compared with quest, so it will give you the advantage when playing competitive games such as beat saber. However, to those who have high ipd like me (around 68-69mm), this may not be the headset for you. I tried my best to keep this headset because it's an amazing hmd, but it was giving me severe eyestrain after every 3-4hour vr session, so after 3 weeks of use, I had no choice to return it. BEWARE, the software ipd adjustment does fix the viewing imagery, however, you'll notice something's wrong when you move your eyes around, see something close to you, or try to fully immerse into vr. The sweetspot of focus is limited for users like me, which cause considerable amount of strain on the eyes when you use it for prolonged period of time. Even the founder of oculus(Palmer Luckey) had said that he cannot use rift s because he has an ipd of 69-70. I didn't believe this at first and bought the rift s, but after using it for weeks, i have to admit that he is somewhat correct.
There're still some minor glitches using the headset such as insight cameras suddenly not working, but I'd honestly say that it's endurable. I tried getting a replacement after 3weeks of use, but the glitches were still there, so it should be a software issue.
For too high or low ipd users, i cannot recommend this headset to you because i myself, love the oculus rift s and tried my best to keep it, but ended up returning it due to eyestrain. For users with adequate ipd, only go for quest if you don't have a gaming pc and strive for mobile vr. Although oculus link lets you play rift games and surprisingly brings a close experience to rhe rift, it's only an alternative solution that uses compression and foviated rendering. If you're only into pcvr, there is no need to make that sacrifice for the mobile and pc hybrid because I can assure you the rift s is far superior for pcvr. And the mobile vr is not there yet. With an outdated snapdragon 835 processor, the graphics look choppy, and you have to buy all the games from oculus store, which seriously becomes a downside if you're to use a different hmd later in the future such as valve index(Quest games don't support crossbuy)

If you're thinking of getting a VR headset for your PC this is it. The setup is easy. You download a 5 GB software and driver package, plug it into a displayport and USB 3.0 port and you're done. No stands or camera necessary. It uses internal cameras to judge your position and track your movements through that. The display is clear, the resolution is nice, the controllers are comfortable. I did have to buy new hardware for my computer to run it so be sure you meet the minimum system specs and I did get a bit of motion sickness while playing Phasmophobia. You will need a Facebook account for easy setup since Facebook owns Oculus. It does have an option for an "oculus account" but I don't know if that's standalone. All said though, it's a good headset for the price, setup is easy but it's held down by the usual motion sickness issue and you might need a Facebook account for it.

The Rift S is still a very solid VR choice for desktop gaming. It is not as nice in terms of visual quality as some of it's competition, but the price is also a third as much as most of it's competition.
The main area of concern I had was how accurate the inside out tracking would be (this VR system handles all of it's room and hand tracking via camera, accelerometers, and AI processing - unlike Valve Index or Vive which uses external tracking devices that need to be mounted on your walls). While it was a concern for me, the tracking works surprisingly well. I have yet to run into any issues.

This will be my second VR headset. My first purchase was the vive cosmos which I returned 2 hours after figuring out the system was restrictive on steam platform games. Every game I bought did not support the vive cosmos.
The oculus rift s tracking was amazing and so far I have not had any problems it.
The price is amazing for what you’re getting it think it’s worth what you pay for.
Cameras built into the head set are great and convenient because you don’t need external tracking.
80FPS. After playing Games like beatsabor and Pavlov the oculus performed great when It came to turning aiming slashing no frame drops at all. My buddy was consistently monitoring the FPS while I was playing and it stayed at 80 FPS consistently.
Imaged is clear and not fuzzy
No external light showed through the vr head set
Sound is great.
I could not find a single thing I did not like about the experience playing for about 8hrs straight lost track of time. I highly recommend The rift s

The Rift S is a good VR headset that is easy to set up. The frame rate is good at 80 fps. I get sick with the PS4 VR and did not experience that with the Rift S. The graphics quality is very good and the tracking from the headset worked very well. The sound was surprisingly good as there are no earphones and it comes out of the band. The voice chat works well with this configuration as well. It was also very comfortable and the controllers are very intuitive. Overall I was impressed and happy with my purchase.

I feel Oculus had a good offering and made what they considered affordable to the VR community a reality. I believe the Rift S was good when I got the device and enjoyed games such as Super Hot, Pavlov, Half Life Alyx, and much more. However I was skeptical in the beginning due to it being a first gen product like the Oculus Go or Quest. I definitely felt those offerings weren't worth the price. Especially now since the Quest 2 came out. However with the silly requirement of Facebooks account being necessary to use their products this may be my last ever Oculus product.

It has it's moments when random bugs cause issues like losing connections to controllers, But overall if you run it in a fast enough machine with a decent graphics card, it's a pretty cool experience for the price point. The tether of course can be a pain, but on the upside the built in sensors mean you don't need separate bases to set up you field. if I had $600 dollars more to drop I'd get the competitor's unit, but I don't so this is a good unit for the money and does the job decently. I would use the recommended hardware requirements as actually the minimum requirements and you'll have a good experience with less headaches

I would have given this VR 1 star but I'm giving it 2 because it has at least worked well for a good while.
While it worked for flawlessly for 6 months, it was a great VR to own. It's comfortable, easy to set-up, 5 cameras, and has a very long cable. Priced at a reasonable price it's a good VR while it lasted. The one I own still works, but after 6 months it feels like a waste of money, and now I'm regretting buying it.
There are several tacky issues that degrade the value of the VR itself. I have never dealt with so many issues when it comes to a VR. My friends own the Rift and they have LESS problems than my Rift S. There are microphone issues, display connection issues, and even faulty joysticks.
The microphone issues to this day have not been fixed by Oculus. I have received NUMEROUS display port/usb connection issues where the VR keeps disconnecting itself over and over and over. I have went through Oculus Support's fixes and none of them have worked. I am stuck with constant errors, a faulty mic, and faulty joystick that has deadzone issues.
In conclusion don't buy this VR. Oculus does not focus on fixing their core issues with this VR anymore and instead are working on applying more fixes to the Oculus Quest. This VR will be a waste of your money. Please do yourself a favor and buy something else.

This system is amazing for the price. Things it does great:
Introduction to Good quality VR at a low price point
Very light weight
Easy to Mod
No need to setup external sensors
Easy to setup and play
Things it could do better:
Limited to 80fps
Loses track sometimes
Battery covers pop off in with intense swinging
Touch controllers battery spring doesn’t have enough pressure behind it
If you are new to VR and not sure about spend 1000+ dollars, look here. I have had a lot of fun with this system. I did some mods to make the halo and cables a little more comfortable.

I was impressed with the performance of this headset given the price being so much lower than the HTC vive or valve index.
The software is well thought out but can crash occasionally. Initial install is easy, especially if you use a YouTube video guide. I do not like the strict Facebook integration so I just created a dummy account for the oculus only.
Clarity of the lenses is good but not great. Motion tracking was actually great. I have small to medium hands and the controllers felt very small.

Better than the original Rift, however it does have some issues. One, the IPD is not a manual configurable setting. So if your IPD is on the low or high side, beware. Also, the lack of sound headphones is annoying. I had to use my own headphones with the headphone jack.
It's nice to not need sensors, I thought tracking was good. Setup was also good. Resolution better, but not as good as upcoming other VR units, so that was a disappointment.
I will say, if your looking for a more affordable and capable VR unit, this is the one to get.

I saw a lot of warnings about using the oculus rift s, They say it has software issues, is not worth it and it sucks. They were wrong, this improves on so much og the oculus rift and I love it, everything is more comfortable it is way easier to put on, it has better visuals and the inside out tracking is so much less messy. The only issue I had on this is that my USB extender did not work as this new headset requires more power than its predecessor and my cord could not supply it. If you are a rift owner, upgrade to the rift s.

First time VR purchase. It was easy to setup and configure. The whole VR experience it amazing. I play Skyrim VR edition and am blown away. Plus it is not as expensive as the HTC Vive or others out there.
