Bought the Rift S for my son and I to try out VR. We love it. Easy set up. No remote sensors to mess around with. Tracking works great. Graphics are really good to.
I am glad we went with the Oculus over the more expensive Vive.

Having had the Oculus Rift S for one month now, I feel like I have a good handle on the device and its quirks; and there are quirks. The biggest and most annoying of these quirks is the tendency of the device to remain disconnected and undetected until the device is unplugged and then re-plugged back into the USB port. Of the troubleshooting I did, the one thing I thought would correct the problem was to enable keep-alive on the USB ports so that they wouldn't power down, which did not solve the problem. It isn't a showstopper, but it is certainly annoying and in the first weeks of having the device, made me begin to question as to whether I should return it. I didn't give into the urge, and did keep the device, but the problem is ongoing. I must unplug and replug the device into the USB port each time I use it.
The headset itself is lightweight and comfortable. The halo used to hold the mask to your face is unobtrusive and effective. The way the S uses the mask mounted tracking instead of using tracking sensors around the room offer allot of convenience over the previous version of the system.
Overall, I would say that while I am generally happy with the purchase, in retrospect I would probably pay the additional 500 dollars to get the Valve system instead if I were to do this all over again with the knowledge I have now.

I've had the original rift (cv1) for over 3 years still works but I'm giving it to a friend for his wedding gift from me and needed a new one and I'm glad this was my choice. I've been wanting a new headset but now with a reason to I'm glad I was able to. I absolutely love using it and not having to worry about where my sensors are and I can play with next to no boundaries. Also the passthrough mode that uses the sensor cameras is really good for doing something quick with your pc or grabbing a water bottle without taking the headset off. 100 & 10% recommend getting this headset if you want a simple set up and an immersive vr experience.

this was my first VR purchase, so i can not compare it to the index, vice, or anything else. All I can say is that going with the rift s as a totally fresh experience, it was worth every penny.
It runs off of a PC, if you're looking for the standalone, that's the Quest.
My PC is running an i7-8700k and an RTX2080-Super.
With those specs, i have never seen a single dip in frames in any title I've played, all in the highest settings. As far as setup, could not be easier. The headset has a single cable that splits to a USB3 and Displayport. Just plug those in and youre done.
Ive never had issue with the headset tracking, nor the hand tracking.
IDK what else to say. its awesome. its fun. its immersive, and I have no regrets.

The Oculus Rift S is a great VR headset and for $399 it is a great deal. I upgraded from the Rift and the resolution upgrade is noticeable, in particular because of the greater subpixel density offered by the LCD subpixel arrangement when compared to the pentile arrangement from the OLED displays like the Rift and the Vive. It is very comfortable, easy to get on-off and no light comes through from the nose gap area, all together excellent fit. The inside-out tracking is much more convenient and responsive than 2-sensor setup of the Rift (3-sensor setup works well but now you have a monster game room with cables everywhere). The only deficiency is the sound as it comes from the halo, and therefore it is too far to work well. I use it with the Airpods

Great VR Headset!

I have really enjoyed the Oculus Rift S VR Headset for a little while now. I can say that it is definitely an extra added Plus+ not having those additional motion sensors set up like the previous Oculus Rift.
However, I do wish the Rift S had more FOV (field of view) range, and a higher refresh rate/resolution. I know that ends up taxing your system harder and might be hard to put into the headset. But there is currently another company that has already incorporated those features. Having a high FOV of around 200 degrees takes the immersion to the NEXT LEVEL! But for the price, it is definitely a great VR headset, and I have thoroughly enjoyed all my time & life spent in the Digital World.
However I did have multiple issues with the software, and the computer registering the device properly. (this was all experienced/done using the exact set-up user manual provided. and with a brand new computer. with an Nvidia RTX 2080 Ti, Intel i7-9700k, 32gb of ram @ 3.2GHz, and all the very latest drivers/windows updates). I also did try attempting it on multiple other computers that were more than capable of handling the Rift S. So my end all conclusion is the Software is buggy currently, but after some time going back and forth attempting to install & uninstalling, I was finally able to get the Oculus Rift S working.

This was a good first VR purchase, and I'm still glad I bought it over the Quest 2 due to the Quest sending video compressed over USB. If you are on the fence about VR, I would either hold off, or see if the apps you're wanting to use can be done on the Quest 2. If it can, I would personally go that route. If you know you'll need tethered, then this is the best unit for the new lower price.

Amazing VR headset for the price. The display is clear and smooth. It also tracks very well for just using 5 cameras. The battery life on the controllers last about 3 whole days of non stop use. The software sometimes can be a little buggy but once you figure out what to do just plug it in and launch a game. This headset is a amazing deal and I would highly recommend. Just be aware that you have to have a Facebook account to use this. And this is my opinion but I don't like buying games through the Oculus store because if something happens to your Facebook account all of your games are gone.

I'll start off by saying my 10 year old saved up for this and wanted it for months before we actually purchased. Prior to this he had the Playstation VR and the Oculus Rift S by and far surpasses that! The graphics are remarkable and the overall sense of total-world-immersion is absolutely insane (in the good way). The entire family has spent hours on this device and games are super easy to find and download.
A few things I wish we had known in advance: this system eats memory. When installing the software, the system will default to store everything on your computer's C-Drive. Don't let it. I strongly recommend setting up to your D or other available drives (I've heard you can use an external but have not yet tried). We set up to C and within 3 game purchases our mostly brand new, 2TB PC was full. We couldn't run additional programs such as Adobe Lightroom. We had to reconfigure (which is much more complicated than setting to an alternate drive initially) to the D. Once we did that, we were OK.
Also, I highly advise purchasing a powered USB port. We experienced a lot of lag and crashing until we did so.
I'm only marking the Ease Of Use as a 3 because it would have been great for us to know the above two points in advance.

Great Upgrade, Slight flaws

As someone who owned the CV1 I was immediately able to notice the upgrade made to the lenses, text is very clear and the SDE and god rays are pretty much gone. The touch controllers are the same as the original but with the ring flipped up however they use a new kind of wrist strap that slips off easily for me. My IPD is 71 and I have been playing with no issues the headset has a big sweet spot so it is easy to position. The audio is good, could be better so prepare to pick up a pair of headphones. The headphone jack is located on the side. Tracking is great for me, if any issues arise it could be because the headset is plugged into a usb 2.0 instead of 3.0. Overall I would highly recommend this headset to anyone looking to upgrade or get into VR for the first time.

Great VR headset. Still better than the quest 2 for pc gaming, controllers die a little fast but do yourself a favor and get rechargeable batteries. Dont know if its a hardware or software issue but mine needs to be unplugged and plugged back in every time I turn my pc on it always gets a usb malfunctioned error. I think mine is defective as ive had another one that worked just fine

Most VR headsets of this quality require separate cameras to be installed in the room you would be using it in, but this is not one of those. Due to the sensors placed right on the headset itself, it can achieve the same level of tracking that those cameras would. This cuts the cost down dramatically and makes the whole setup much easier to use. This also means you can bring it almost anywhere you can bring your VR-capable PC as well, making it much easier to share the experience with your friends. The VR experience itself is very good and much better than I have experienced on consoles and mobile

The software can be a bit flaky at times. The only real hardware issue that's been noticed has been the left controller losing its tracking when it moves quickly. Software updates seem to have helped a bit recently, but it doesn't resolve it. And if you hit the controller off something it seriously throws the tracking for a loop and a software restart is about the only things that fixes it. Other than that it is pretty amazing.

Rift s in my opinion is better than quests 1&2 in my opinion due to graphics/resolution and games. You have more games because you have steam games you can use too. The only thing I hate is the cable that connects the headset to the computer. It sucks. In that since the quests are better. I use the omen 30L gaming pc from bestbuy and it only has the rtx 2060 and that works perfect for vr rift s. Rift s with the omen 30l has zero lag and runs smoothly. If my wife hadn’t taken over my gaming pc for school I’d play rift s more than I do my quest 2.

This thing is AMAZING! Easy to set up, easy to use, soo much fun. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because I've got nerve damage in my left leg, which makes my leg a little unstable, and this thing is so realistic and immersive, that I'm often on the verge of falling over. So basically, it's too good. I love it! So does my teenage son, and everyone knows teenage boys are pretty critical of game systems.

Controllers are a little smaller for kids. The screen is major upgrade without being a big impact on hardware requirements (using a 1070ti and intel Devils Canyon i5). Finally don’t need a dedicated USB 3 card for 3 camera 360* movement. Cord is a little longer, maybe 2 feet. The audio is a downgrade in terms of fidelity, but you can hear the world around you, plus there is a headphone jack that does work.
The pass through feature is awesome! Also it’s a lot more comfortable.
Why get Rift S instead of other high resolution? It’s less than half the price, and the lower resolution means you don’t need a $700 video card to use it.

Having sold my rift to get the rift s I can say I am very happy I did! To me the graphics are better and not having to mess with sensors all the time is a major step forward. And the guardian system is so cool, you can map out your floor and when you cross the barrier the headset switches to video camera of your actual surroundings! I had problems with initial set up, but after reading about the usb power settings on windows 10 from a previous review I fixed it and wow I am so happy with this headset. I have lost half the day playing in VR. I never could play that long with the rift. And oh yea you can wear your glasses!

Overall, it was a good purchase and still works a couple years later. My only negative on it is make sure you have the space to use it and also it's kinda uncomfortable after awhile of using it. It's not exactly lightweight. All that being said, I'm happy with the purchase and believe it was well worth it.
