I'm off on a once in a life time sort of vacation soon and while my phone has a great camera in it, I'll be doing a lot of snorkeling and I just wasn't confident in the various ZipLock bags that are sold for using a phone underwater, so I prowled around for a sturdy camera to take to the wet places. The TG-5 is waterproof to 50 feet - way deeper than I'm likely to go, so that's perfect. It's also shock resistant, and crush resistant - though I'm hoping not to test those out :) Unlike most new cameras, it does not have a touch screen which is the most common criticism I've seen of it, but those critics don't seem to be aware that touch screens don't work very well - if at all - under water. All of the controls on the TG-5 are physical and work above and below the surface. I also picked up a flash diffuser for use underwater, and the telephoto lens kit, both of which are also waterproof - though I doubt I'll risk changing lenses in the middle of the south Pacific :) I've only been practicing with the camera so don't have any particularly notable photos to share that aren't of my dining room table. The attached was taken in the alley behind my house, late in the day when the sky was a pretty striking shade of pink. The only change to the file was exporting it from Olympus' native raw format (OPF) to a JPEG to upload. I will say that I don't much care for the Olympus Viewer 3 software. So far it's the only thing I've found which can export the OPF files, but I haven't looked too hard and I'm sure someone's got a plugin for Photoshop.

When we bought the cancers there weren't any reviews, but w took a chance and are so glad we did! Camera takes amazing pictures while under water, as well as on land. Way to use and great quality. Camera is sturdy, and will join us for all our vacations.

This was a perfect camera we were not afraid to use on our Honeymoon to Jamaica. We went less than 48 hours prior to leaving on our trip to find a great underwater camera that was reasonably priced and wouldn't take a lot of knowledge to use right out of the box. This checked all of our boxes! We ordered a bunch of batteries and memory cards for it and this was the easiest point and shoot underwater camera we've ever used. The quality so far is amazing as well (purchased mid-Sept 2018). I hope this camera lasts for years and many more trips around the world as we travel!

I bought this for its underwater performance, but it is a great all around travel camera too. The underwater pictures look awesome when swimming in clear water. The night shots are vibrant with color, but use a stand to get clear shots. The daylight pictures are crisp. The camera's many features allow taking pictures in many different ways and places.

I bought this camera because I didn't want to buy the disposable underwater cameras anymore. I am happy I bought this one before our last snorkeling trip. It takes good pictures on land as well as underwater. Although it does take practice. There are four underwater modes, and you need to select one for the photos you want. I had stayed on the underwater snapshot mode mainly. I found out that zooming in this mode caused the pictures to come out blurry. I also tried the underwater wide and underwater HDR modes. I got some good photos with the wide, the HDR ones didn't come out as well. This may have been a result of my movements and the movements of those around me. It also lives up to the name "Tough". I had put the strap on the camera, but it wasn't as secure as I thought. At one point the camera fell off the strap, falling about 2 feet to the cement. The camera didn't get a scratch on it. I still wouldn't test it and purposefully drop it from a higher height. Just good to know that it works fine after a fall. I also used the app to upload the photos to my phone. Worked just fine, I have an iPhone 6S.

I bought this camera to take on a vacation to Florida. On the first day the kids had it in the pool. At the end of the week long vacation I had over 3,500 pics. (Most taken by the kids underwater.) The pics are amazing but the under water pics are mind blowing!!! They are crystal clear. I love this camera. Very easy to use. Can download pics to app on phone.

Took this on a trip to Israel. Practiced with it a while. Got fairly fluent. There is always program setting for point and shoot. When pics are good, they're great...but they can be pretty bad when experimenting. Have not used it underwater. All in all a good camera.

Overall this is a pretty good little camera. After using it for nearly a year it has been used underwater in both pools and the ocean, on beaches with incredibly fine sand, downhill skiing, in the desert and on a three week trip through the Grand Canyon on the Colorado River. The three week trip was the next to last straw though. In that area there wasn’t a place that was dust free to be able to charge it or change to a new battery so not only did the dust creep in under buttons and dials, it also got in the battery and cord compartments. It still worked, but none of the dials moved and the screen was covered in scratches. That’s why I purchased the protection plan for the year, though even that didn’t work out the way I had thought it would. But that’s a whole different review once that mess is straightened out. Other than that, so long as you’re careful to fully rinse it in clean water after using it in the water and dusty environments, there shouldn’t be a problem from that end. That includes removing that covers the front of the camera lens. This is important because there are screws under it that will corrode. Pros * The macro settings are phenomenal. When I was just messing around with it when I first got it, I set the lens down on my jeans and took a picture. It was incredibly sharp and detailed. My DSLR can’t focus when that close to the object. *It worked very well underwater. It was used first in a pool to test the effectiveness of the waterproofing before our vacation. On both of these instances, it was taken down to 10 feet and set on the bottom of the pool while my husband swam laps. No problems at all. The pictures taken in the pool look there isn’t even water there. On our trip, we went snorkeling in the Caribbean. It was taken down to a depth of about 20 feet with no problems. The photos came out nice and clear and we even got some of the kids swimming with a sea turtle while I was a fair distance away. My only complaint is that the screen is not super easy to see when under water. *The photos in general turn out great. The few that I haven’t been happy with were because I was taking a picture out the car window or had used the wrong setting. Cons: * No printed manual and the manual that is available on the Olympus website is not very clear. It should not be necessary to look up YouTube videos showing how to use a point and shoot camera. I have used many cameras in the past 25 years from a very basic film camera to a Nikon d610. This is hands down the most difficult to figure out, both because of the lack of a good manual and because of the way the controls are set up. * The RAW setting is next to useless if you want to use anything other than the software recommended by Olympus. Why wouldn’t the company make it so photos could be edited in one of the programs that the majority of people actually use? Anyway, for whatever reason, it is next to impossible to get a well edited RAW photo from this camera using Adobe products, without basically creating a whole new image and spending an insane amount of time. * The lack of a full manual mode- if you’re going to take the time to have P, S, and A modes, add in full manual as well. There are still people out there that like the control, myself included. * Geotagging... yes the camera does it. The problem is that it drains the battery incredibly fast and (unless I am missing something) is only available to view on the Olympus tracking app. It is one of the worst apps I have seen. What I had envisioned was the ability to use the wifi settings to transfer pictures to my phone, have them pop up in my photos (which it does nicely via yet another app), AND have the locations pop up on the map that shows where pictures were taken with my phone. This is the part that doesn’t happen. The locations show up on a GPS list in the app. No map anywhere, at least as of when I tried to use it in March. In total, there are 3 Olympus apps that are needed when one is all you should need. And they are all far more confusing than they need to be. * Not as tough as they make it out to be. Yes, it was used in an area not many people are going. However, if it’s going to be advertised as dust proof, make it dust proof. The sand it was exposed to in both the Grand Canyon, Antelope Canyon and the beaches was more like powdered sugar and closer to dust than sand. After that Grand Canyon trip, if it was supposed to move on the camera, it didn’t. In order to get the memory card out, I had to use a butter knife to pry open the lock switch and then do the same for the open switch. The “zoom” dial and the dial to change settings didn’t move at all. Best guess is that there are far too many dials to actually be dust proof. And the LCD screen was covered in scratches, to the point where I couldn’t really see what I was taking a picture of. I had kept it in a case when not being used, so it’s not like it was being mistreated.

We have, over the years, tried a number of different brands of water camera. The majority took entirely too long between shots and had only mediocre photo quality. This is our second Olympus water camera. They are easily the best cameras we have ever owned! The picture quality easily rivals some of our older SLR cameras. We have used these cameras for the beach, paddle boarding, hiking, and other activities that would kill most cameras! On a three day trip into the Grand Canyon, with hiking, waterfalls, and swimming, this camera, floaty strap, and spare batteries were all that we needed! Of every water camera I’ve ever owned, this line of cameras is the only one that I would ever recommend.

Easy to use, great photos. Haven’t printed yet. Only problem is that the double lock knobs for the battery/memory card compartment can be hard to slide. I had to use a coin. It’s great because you know the compartment will stay closed but you may need to change the battery. I bought extra batteries because I needed 3 for a day of snorkeling. They sell an underwater case, but the camera can go underwater as is. I use a card reader to transfer photos, not the camera directly.

This unit is very rugged. My 11 year old boy took it to camp and it was perfect from the macro feature to the pano and the high quality pictures and videos. The biggest weakness is the auto focus and capturing moving objects, they were never in focus when you have the camera on auto.

On the exterior, the design looks super durable and sturdy and has an appealing look. It’s conveniently sized and comes with a strap for easy carry. With bright lighting It takes really nice pictures. The digital zoom isn’t really the best. If you have to zoom in for anything, you have to accept that the image will be very grainy and poor. If the lighting is just a bit dim, expect It to be grainy or fuzzy as well. Underwater image quality is decent. The zoom becomes a major issue because It loses so much quality with just a little bit of zoom. I’m not a camera expert at all, so perhaps there might’ve been some setting to address the poor image of quality with poor lighting or zoom. I would rather do some more research and find a camera that meets all my expectations.

I had the first edition of the Olympus Tough model. After 4 years of rough usage it finally said no more. I compaired with the Gopro but I decided this camera offered more bang for my buck. I love that the charger is now the regular easier to find charger. Love the new features for underwater pics. High def. The videos are squeeky clean. I got the red one so not only does it take awesome pics, it looks super cool! Looking forward to another 4 years with this awesome camera!
