The is my second Onkyo receiver and the sound quality has seen a big improvement.
The Pro's :
One of the best receivers for this price point
Dolby Atmos sound decoder
A simple remote control that even the most technically challenged understand
upgrade 1080p videos to 4K Ultra HD
8 HDMI input connections
Cons
A simple remote control that only controls the Onkyo and not the TV
I am now tempted to buy 2 more speakers to use Dolby Atmos

1st time i bought Onkyo product. Did a lot of research and this was a great find. Im blown away with the sound quality. I had an in expensive receiver which I thought sounded fine but once I hooked Onkyo up wow what a difference. Only thing I'm confused on and no one could answer was it says its has 170 watt per channel but on box it clearly states 210 watts per channel.. Other than that this had alot of great options and easy set up. One hint, Make sure you get a high quality HDMI cable , like a monster cable, if you want to run your 4k TV through it. Makes a big difference in picture quality.

I needed a receiver that had some futureproofing, flexibility, good ratings, and was inexpensive. Well reviewed by many top 10 lists, this Onkyo was everything they said. Now, the sound fields aren't as numerous or flexible as my old Yamaha receiver, but, that also just makes things simpler. I paid $220 on Black Friday and got a pair of them (one for the man-cave, one for the "home theater" (aka the basement). So, I'd say don't be afraid you won't like it, But if you are an advanced home theater person and want tons of flexibility and adjustability, this one may feel a little too limited/constraining. It also passes the most important test: It sounds GOOD.

The Bluetooth works well with all the devices I have attached except the Echo. It has has an intermittent issue where the sound goes on and off constantly until it is disconnected and reconnected.
It works perfectly with 4k viewing, which is why we purchased it. I only wish there was a Bluetooth output capability. The surround sound is great! The setup was a lot more intuitive than with my Denon.

I was replacing an old higher end Yamaha that has been great for years. I just finished the basement and put a small home theater down there for the kids. I had to update the receiver for all the kids games and things with HDMI. I was looking for something that had a phono in and upconverted to HDMi from composite. I found this one on sale at Best Buy and picked it up. Setup was a breeze and the auto speaker setup seemed to work well. Operation is pretty simple and the kids have no problems turning it on and finding whatever input they want. I have only had it about a week or so but am happy so far.

I bought this Onkyo TXNR656 after reading fantastic reviews online. I paired this with Harman Kardon hkts30 5.1 speakers but plan to add 2 Klipsch speakers to complete the 7.1. I have a PlayStation 4 hooked up as well as a Benq projector, Mac computer to run Netflix/Hulu, and a turntable. I love all the features including Bluetooth and found it easy to hook up. The instruction manual wasn’t really clear but my house was already prewired so I was replacing an older system. The sound is great!

Replaced a 8 year old Sony that kept dropping it's config. Nice having wifi and Bluetooth. Wish the web interface would let you name/assign inputs. Would love to not sit and fiddle with the remote to name all that stuff but alas, there really isn't anything you can do in the web interface other than assign an IP which is a bit ironic. Sounds good, OSD for volume is nice since it's hidden in my theater. Used the auto feature on speaker setup and it seemed much more comprehensive than my Sony.

I purchased this receiver because it had 2 HDMI outputs and I would have given it 5 stars but the sub HDMI out only pushes video, no sound. This was verified by Onkyo support tech.
Overall, a very capable unit with built in wifi to cobble all of my video and music sources together. Setup was simple with step by step on screen prompts and user manual was very easy to read. I wasn't looking forward to setting up another receive since my last two Pioneer user manuals gave me brain cramps trying to figure it all out. This one was so easy!

This Onkyo receiver offers a great mix of features and quality amplification for the price. I upgraded my older Denon for a variety of reasons. My complants are minimal. I will agree with others- switching inputs can be annoying. There is audio and visual disruptions that seem unnecessary. The remote is very cheaply made, considering the price. I use a logitech, so it is less of an inconvenience. I am still waiting for the firmware updates to get the advertised features like Google Cast. All of that said, the power and clarity is superior. My Denon was rated at very similar power and THD levels, but it does not compare to this Onkyo. Considering this core performance, number of channels, surround support, number of 4k ready inputs, wifi, easy on-screen set-up, and other items- I can strongly recommend this product.

I needed lots of HDMI inputs and this has them. Easy to set up and use. Had issues upgrading the firmware and tech support was not only extremely helpful, but friendly too. I almost nicked it a star for the claim of "Chromecast built in." It is, but if you want to watch videos, you will need a regular chromecast. Actually, the stuff I can chromecast, I can play directly through their Internet interface. Not sure why they bothered to offer it.

This my 3rd Onkyo 6 series. They have all been great performers. I wanted more HDMI, Bluetooth, Wifi, digital out to zone 2, atmos, etc. I have two ceiling speakers so set this up as 5.1.2. I impressed by the sound quality but we know Onkyo always delivers on this. The numbers for the volume are higher for the same sound level on this model but they are just numbers. You can play this LOUD with no distortion. I have used the Bluetooth audio and the Android phone connects no problem. Using Spotify or Pandora works perfectly using Wifi. Easy to set up but check the values assigned to your speakers after calibration. You likely need to modify the crossover value for the ceiling and front speakers. Using many of the HDMI slots with Bluray, Chromecast and FireTV. Set up was easy and everything works as expected. Firmware update as soon as I connected to the internet. No test of Dolby Vision as I have a 1080p TV. The 3D soundstage is AMAZING. Thanks Onkyo!

I want to say this a great receiver. I've yet to make it work right - may be technical difficulties on my part - but setting up is easy enough and testing works the speakers connected, now I can hear but the front two speakers unless I raise the volume to over 75. On that note, the min Vol to hear anything had to be over 45... recommending this isn't a yes or no!!!

I bought this Onkyo a/v receiver to replace a Pioneer unit that was not performing very well. The Onkyo has been great right out of the box, reasonably easy to set-up, straight-forward instructions and so far (1 week), sounds great, much better than the Pioneer I had. I am very, very satisfied and would recommend this to anyone looking for an inexpensive but very capable a/v receiver.

Actually bought this for my parents, so they could start their HT system. Has great sound quality.
I do notice that (and have read from various forum posts, by other owners), the volume will be turned up to 50+, to hear anything well. That's much different from my 646, which can play at 30 and be heard well.
But regardless of this, the clarity is great.

I have several Onkyo receivers and they always perform as advertised. I have had three Onkyo receivers that have been performing flawlessly for 10 years! Only reason I got a new one was for 4K purposes but I will use my old one in another application. I was in the home theater business for years and nothing beats an Onkyo for price and performance!!

I have been using this receiver for a little over a month. I currently have it hooked to a pair of Polk Audio S55 tower speakers. Will be adding more later. My media room shakes already with just this minimal setup. Receiver is easy to use and puts out great sound on any thing I play through it. It far exceeds my expectations.

easy hookup, although the speaker hook up knobs should be updated to an easier interface, but that is an industry criticism; excellent sound quality; nice features; I had an older Onkyo receiver for many years with no problems until I decided to upgrade to get the HDMI capability. Never been happier with Onkyo receivers.

My previous A/V receiver was an Onkyo which I purchased refurbished over 10 years ago. It still works flawlessly but it’s functionality was getting more and more dated since it didn’t have any HDMI inputs. I picked this one up on a holiday sale and I couldn’t be happier with it.
The thing that really sold me on this is all the inputs it has. I have so many peripheral devices that most receivers out there can’t accommodate all of them. Fortunately, Onkyo receivers usually have abundant inputs and this one is no exception. I got everything connected and there is still room for more.
Sound and operation wise... 10/10. My wife actually thinks it sounds better than our previous Onkyo receiver. Oh and the product dimensions listed are actually the size of the box it comes in, so don’t let that fool you like it did me. :P

Price of the receiver was the best I could find and it covered all my “future proof” requirements like ATMOS support, built in WiFi and 4K support. As a inexperienced audio setup person menus are easy to use and the 5.1.2 Bose system connected to the receiver plays crisp clear sound. Highly recommended.
