Replaced my 800 Onkyo receiver because I wanted one that had hdmi connections. So glad I purchased this one because of all the other options like Bluetooth and wifi. Easy setup, great sound.

Bought this AV receiver to replace a sound system in a box. Has much more power and most importantly a ton of HDMI inputs so I can control my TV, cable box, blu-ray, Amazon Fire Stick and Chromecast through it. I hooked it up to Klipsch speakers and an awesome subwoofer. The Onkyo rocks and I can shake the house at will. Get this and hook it up to a good set of speakers and you can't go wrong!

I have owned 4 Onyko receivers over the years. This receiver is a network and bluetooth capable receiver that allows you to use Iphone or Ipad app to control all functions. Sound quality is clear and distinct. The Onyko allows me to walk into other room, zone 2, and set the volume on my app to the exact level. I'm very pleased with this purchase. Ps setup was very easy and make sure you get new hdmi cables that will audio back to receiver

For the money I paid it is well worth it. The online offered owners manual if you need more than just the basics is sort of a bummer. I ended up downloading it on my laptop so I could have it view-able on the 15" screen while working on issues that I had. I had no tv sound while the AVR is turned off which I ended up figuring out that I needed a HDMI cord that supports ARC. The manual never listed that as a possible problem. Also, Zone 2 only puts out sound to the second room speakers if its analog, it won't do it if its digital sound so I only have music in Zone 2 from an old CD player, cassette player and VCR. My living room older model Onkyo TX-NR717 puts out sound to zone 2 & 3 no matter if its digital or analog.

I sought a receiver to enhance the home movie viewing experience with an LG 70 inch television I purchased on Black Friday. This MORE than meets the bill. The power inside this unit is phenomenal. It drives two old-school Bose 401s and two Polk Monitor 50 speakers. I live inside a small apartment building and can only barely touch the surface of what this unit can deliver. I like the rich deep bass it delivers with minimum volume. At a cost of less than $250, I got way more than my moneys worth.

Fantastic replacement to my older Onkyo receiver that I had since 2001. It was time to consider a replacement and this model is perfect. After experiencing some issues with compatibility to my older TV and components, I called Onkyo's toll free support at least three times and was able to get the information I needed to make all the connections. Everything is up and running and I am thrilled with this new receiver. It is truly amazing what they pack into receivers with WiFi, Ethernet, Bluetooth, etc. I was looking at Yamaha and Denon but decided on Onkyo and am glad I made the decision to stay with Onkyo.

Works great and sounds great with an easy setup and calibration process. As advertised it can do 5.1 and 7.2 surround but keep in mind only 3 inputs will handle HDR.

Rather than replacing an old stereo receiver with another plain stereo receiver for my parents, I upgraded them with a future ready Onkyo TX-NR656 home theater receiver . They needed a phono input which this one has, and on the pre Black Friday sale, the price was unbeatable! For now they only want it to play music, and it was quick and easy to replace the older one and combined with new speakers, this sounds crystal clear. The improved sound and the remote control is a nice upgrade for now, though I hope to move this into the living room as center of the home theater experience soon.

Too bad these are no longer available via Best Buy. This is the closest to ideal AV Receiver I could find, and for about $300. You will not find a better bargain. I would have liked it to have THX certification, but will not spend another $300 for that when it's just a marginal difference in quality. And I would rather spend $300 on something else. Anyway, it's awesome for my 7.1 setup, I have not yet attached a second subwoofer because I need to make space, but it's wonderful. I use DTS X and Neural and Dolby Atmos for 7.1 when it's not surround sound 7.1. This thing is a beast. almost 1200 watts. and not I don't even go over 60% volume levels because it's so nice. Sound is so clear, bass is crisp, and the overall sound experience is crazy. I would highly recommend to anyone looking at this model. Otherwise, give it another year or two before purchasing a model that can handle 4k/8k HDR, and two separate inputs/sources outputting into two different sources/outputs. Example, running two Xbox One Xs into the receiver and then each signal being sent to a different tv. This unit will just mirror one signal into the other tv, but still, not a deal breaker. Definitely recommend purchasing this if you have the chance. It will last you before technology becomes cheap enough after upgrading to new standards, which will take a while. So grab one while you can!

I needed a receiver to replace my 12 year old Pioneer. Bought this based on features and price. Hooked it up, calibrated my speakers, added two front Dolby Atmos speakers, and have been amazed ever since! Sound is amazing. It pushes the experience like I've never experienced before in any receiver I've owned. Yes, there are more expensive receivers out there, but not necessarily better, just more expensive. You won't be disappointed.

For all of the features, I think this is a great a/v receiver. Setup was easy, and the sound quality is great with my 5.1 system. The only downside is that my old Nintendo Wii with component video cable doesn't seem to work in 480p mode with the receiver -- I had to switch to 480i, and even then I was having issues. I ended up switching to the lower quality composite cable. Point being -- one of the benefits of the receiver -- component video upscaling to hdmi -- didn't work as advertised. I only tried it with one device, but I imagine most people only have a couple legacy devices anyway.

    Open Box Beware

We have had Onkyo receivers for a little over a decade, good with the bad, if you follow the brand you know there were some serious issues in the last 6 year. We were not planning to update our receiver anytime soon since the current THX certified receiver was working well. Then our Samsung Plasma 3D TV dies luckily the geek squad warranty enables us to buy a 4K tv, but we still were not planning to dip into the 4k movie quagmire, until we got a Xbox One S, which got us enjoying the 4k Blu-ray feature only find out the current Onkyo which said it was "4k ready" was not, could not pass-though 4k and could not handle Dolby Atmos or DTS X. Still not on hunt for a new receiver, until we come across a pretty good deal on a open box of this receiver under $300 so we take a chance. The open box comes in a looks good, pull everything out spending the next couple of hours wiring the new receiver up. Moment of truth comes and it does not work, the headphone indicator is on with no sound coming from the speakers, spend the next hours trying to update firmware and check for anything which could have caused this. Basically the open box was DOA, first open box from Best Buy we ever had a problem with. Also appears this is not a uncommon fault for this model and several brands receivers, guess they use the same parts supplier for some parts. We called Best Buy their solution is to take it to the store for a return and the store will order another open box for us, probably going to be weeks to get it all straightened out and that is IF the next open box receiver works. Not thrilled but we trug into town to start the return, the young lady at the customer service desk does Best Buy a solid by taking the return and exchanging for a new one matching the price to the penny for what we paid with a 4 year warranty. Not sure she was supposed to do this (so her name is withheld) but it boosted our opinion of Best Buy immeasurably, we went from ticked off at getting a bad product to thinking we got a special deal. On to the receiver now that we finally got one that works, to start with the sound calibration is totally different, still plug in the mic during the set up but the tones used are totally different. Pop in John Wick UHD Blu-ray to give it a quick test, not a movie you would think is a sound demo, maybe it's not however the first thing we noticed was the way this receiver uses the speakers is totally different, really surprised at the depth of sound our old speakers were capable of. It sounded like John Wick was in our kitchen body slamming a bad guy into the counter. Since then we've gathered other UHD movies just to enjoy the Atmos sound. Honestly we were not expecting to see such a significant difference, TrueHD and DTS HD were supposed to be transparent audio to the theater release, somehow Dolby Atmos is above and beyond. Also didn't think a sub $300 receiver would best a $700 THX certified receiver. Should mention the price may reflect some of the options you may be used to missing like Sirius Radio app, and the on screen interface looks kind of cheap. On a whole we love this new receiver and are gungho for new UHD to watch and even re-watching old blu-ray movies, but if you do buy one make sure to spend the extra on the Geek Squad warranty, Onkyo (and other companies like Yahama) can have quality issues which appear down the road. Honestly the Open Box probably should be avoided, they are either bad unites from the get go or further damaged in shipping. We would recommend new units to friends but not the open box. Would give it 5 stars base on how happy we are with it except for the problems with the open box and the concern it might fail in the future.
