It was easy to setup, wish i could have just used the digital optical like my old Onkyo, but all these new receivers want to have a video input. I just went all HDMI and it worked perfect.

I replaced a Yamaha receiver I purchased over 10 years ago with the Onkyo TX-NR656. My intention was to replace it with another Yamaha but the equivalent Yamaha receiver was not available and was an additional $150. In addition to having 8 HDMI the sound quality was fantastic. The Bluetooth and wifi features are a great feature to have when you store media on your phone and can easily pair it with the receiver. I can go on and on about my new Onkyo receiver.

This things sounds great. Haven't taken advantage of the 7 speakers yet but am happy with the 5.1. Only negative is it could use a little more power but I am using it in a large room. For the price of 250 it is great.

Awesome deal for $250. It replaced a 20 year old Onkyo receiver. Set up is easy with on screen menus. Only issue has been a little audio drop off while viewing material from my dvr.

Do not accept the basic sound...after a few weeks it gets better each time an adjustment is made. It can bi-amp the klipsch 28rf speakers no problem and brings them to life. However it will take some more time making adjustments as I think I can get them sounding better...however this receiver is smart and picks up well on what I want to do. With the proper HDMI cords the tv remote controls the receivers volume when it's on. The functionality with the iPad is great. Just needs some more time tuning the sounds.

This has given me a single point to run my home entertainment system. I love that it has a simple app to control it without line of sight needed. Sound is excellent & setup was super easy. I have my TV, XBox, Echo Dot, & iPod hooked up to it all the time. I use Roku (Built into the TV) for Sling, Spotify, Amazon etc. Younwont find the feature set and sound quality for anywhere near the price I paid on black Friday week.

It's tough to appraise something like this without a competing product next to it so you can A<>B the performance. I purchased this mainly for what it has on paper and for its 4K and Pandora capabilities. The wifi works great. I had a Sony receiver before and I liked that the volume would be pretty loud by the time you hit about 30 and you really couldn't go above 35 without bursting an ear. The Onkyo starts being audible at about 20 or 25 and I'm watching movies at ~50. Forget going to 11! :)

I have been using Onkyo receivers for 25 years. This is #3 for me. Each time was an upgrade not because the previous one crapped out but because technology advancements. I bought a 4K HDR TV right before Christmas and my old Onkyo (TX-SR706), did not support ARC nor 4K. So I had to upgrade, but planned on waiting. But since the new TV features I am now casting Vudu and Netflix and wanted HD audio which fiber optic does not provide, so it got the best of me and I pulled the trigger on this certified open box gem. I could not be happier. I had a 5.2 system in my smaller home theater so I was excited to get Atmos. After I got the in wall speakers from another online retailer (rhymes with shmono shprice) for my ceiling, I was all set. I am so glad I did. It adds such a cool dimension to my movie watching and PS4 experience, which I was not expecting such a change. This receiver sounds so much clearer and crisper than my THX certified Onkyo that was over 10 yrs old. With the size of my theater I did not need the xtra speaker power nor the additional HDMI output and the fact that all the other specs were exactly the same, the money I saved on next step down was perfect. I am familiar with how Onkyo's setup works so it was pretty simple for me. The OSD through the TV was very easy to follow.
If you are looking for a boost to your experience after getting a sparkly new 4K TV, or just want to upgrade, do yourself a favor and go with Onkyo. IMO and Cnet, and Tech radar's opinions, this is a company that offers the most bang for your buck, with fantastic sound, features and superbly built long lasting equipment.

I purchased this unit because I needed a receiver to run my living room entertainment system and also have a separate zone for my backyard patio. So far it has performed great. I got it at a great price and it has all the features I need. There are probably more flashy models, but this one is solid and effective. It pushes great sound to my patio speakers and is easily controlled with my universal remote. I can easily switch zones and devices to get the combination I want. Onkyo is a great product.

When I first looked into this receiver I was afraid it wouldn’t play my second subwoofer. Because the set up is 5.1.2 but it does and it’s monsterish. The power in this receiver pushes all my speakers to its full potential. It’s an absolute powerhouse, if your looking for an amazing hometheater experience this the receiver for you.

I needed a upgrade for my stereo in my office. I still love to listen to vinyl and needed a receiver that had phono input. I love the Bluetooth to stream music from my phone or Ipad through the receiver.

I upgraded from the 636 model and I am not regretting it at all. The sound quality is great and the new OSD is a lot easier to manipulate to change any settings. It works great with all of my A/V inputs

This is my second Onkyo receiver, and am i glad i upgraded. I really liked my first one, but it was over four years old, and i bought a new tv, so when the BF deal showed up, i jumped at the chance. Everything is about 25% improved-picture and audio. The design is very sharp, but you need tiny fingers to make all the connections. Did i mention it has A TON of power?

This is a great receiver for the buck. It has an ample amount of connection type and compatible with both Apple and Android connections and streaming. However, my biggest gripe is the claim that it's 4K HDR without any disclaimers. Be warned that out of the total of 8 HDMI inputs, only 3 are HDMI 2.2 for 4K and HDR passthrough. It isn't labeled on the receiver, the packaging, or the manual that comes with it. The only way I found out was through the setup menu when trying to troubleshoot my XBox connection. Solution was to use another input besides the "Game" input and rename it in settings. Some other receivers with only 4 inputs that are all 2.2 compliant might be more appealing.
