I don't think there's enough space for me to give a thorough review of this player, but suffice it to say, if you're in the market for a high-resolution Digital Audio Player, the Onkyo DP-X1 is hard to beat. Full disclosure: I purchased this unit as a display model from the Magnolia mini-store at my Best Buy location. What's to like? A nice sounding DAC, support for balanced headphones as well as conventional single-ended headphones, two microSD card slots for storing lots of FLAC and DSF files. Yes, it plays MP3 and OGG Vorbis files, too, but those won't fully showcase what this player can do. It runs Android, so I found that ES File Explorer Pro was a great app to install. You'll probably also want to install the Onkyo Music app, as it supports direct download of your purchases to the device AND they sell MQA music files. The DP-X1 has full support for MQA. I've used this with Klipsch IEMs (very efficient) and Beyerdynamic T90 headphones (250 ohm impedance, somewhat harder to drive). This thing should easily drive any headphones with up to 300 ohm impedance. I've tried balanced and single-ended output, and I can confirm that balanced output to headphones isn't just hype. Other things: The physical buttons are fantastic, especially if you don't want to wake up the touchscreen just to interact with the player. Volume knob feels very good to the touch and doesn't change loudness levels too fast or too slow.

I d survived like many with the requisite ipod experience and thought I was satisfied. I recently lost my home system to a fire and had to rebuild it and began looking into hi-res and digital storage of my cd collection. This led me to research mobile players. after looking at mobile options and researching several I opted for the onkyo DP-X! . I could not be more impressed with the sound quality.overall. using hi res recordings is outstanding but I was also impressed with how it reached into my data files and sucked in all of my existing mp3s and made them sound so much better than I thought they could. I strongly reccomend this to anyone looking to upgrade their mobile experience. my only complaint is the sharp corners and size. Also priced much cheaper than the sony and astel and kern options.

Overall this portable player provides great sound via the superb DAC's on board. May even invest in an HD headphone set to take advantage of the balanced output

To get the most from this player, one has to be truly devoted to android devices and unlocking their potential. The player has an android operating system that pretty much works like your smartphone. You can download a Pioneer app to help you get music from your computer to the player. Or, use a music streaming service. Obviously to get the better sound you need hifi recordings or hifi service. In my opinion, if you had this, music playing from your smartphone would sound acceptable.

Battery life music only bluetooth headphones: 2 1/2 hours Bluetooth signal very directional, lots of dropouts. Great sound wired, but wanted more.
