After having a Denon receiver for a long time, I did some research to upgrade my home theater. This Onkyo receiver was a perfect upgrade for my system. It was very easy to set up, and the sound quality is excellent. Best Buy had an outstanding sale price and I jumped on it. Very happy with my purchase and I think it would be great for the average home theater owner.

Works well! This home theater receiver has plenty of sound to fill my 12 x 12 TV room. Lots of HDMI inputs. I just wish they would include a printed manual with this receiver. The quick install guide does cover a lot, but a printed manual is always nice. This unit has Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. I can use this receiver to play music from my iPhone using the Bluetooth or the Wi-Fi can find the music on my server. I’m pretty impressed.

I bought this on sale for $250 as it seemed far and away the best in that price range. It replaced a 10 year old insignia 5.1 receiver that sometimes had issues decoding from my Firestick. The sound on this is way better than before. I am adding two additional speakers to get the full Atmos sound. The setup was simple and it has multiple ways to input the sound. I suspect there are better ones out there, but not at this price point.

Bought this receiver to replace a Sony that died a horrible death. The price was right during Black Friday. I selected this received because of the RCA jacks as well as the HDMI ports. I have a lot of older components that require RCA jacks to operate as well as new components that utilize the new HDMI connections. It was easy to set up and works with my home wi-fi and streaming services. Overll a quality receiver.

I just bought this about a month ago and so far so good. This is replacing another onkyo receiver that burned out after 5 years- the sound board I gathered based on the symptoms and all of the reviews on my previous model. The set up was quick and easy. Great features for the price and I got this on sale for a good deal. Looks nice and the sound quality is better than expected considering what I paid. I really like the features on this model and so far so good. I will update in a few months.

This replaced an old unit that did not pass through 4k or had 7.2
I needed a new receiver for a house that came with 7.1 prewiring and my old receiver was only 5.1. Got this unit and it powered up and worked no problem.
Only small issue I have is with ARC and how it works with some of my TV's in that the audio doesnt always come through or that I have to switch my TV from auto to PCM or Bitrate. Weird issue.
Other than that, sounds great... looks good.. happy purchase.

Needed a 4K receiver that was HDCP 2.2 since my
Sony STR-DH750 was only 4K pass-through and I bought it 6 months before the HDCP 2.2 models were available :(
I read a lot of positive reviews about Onkyo receivers and this baby performs brilliantly!! The 7 HDMI inputs all HDCP 2.2 was important to me and other receivers at this price didn’t offer that many inputs. The sound once I got this thing calibrated BLEW ME AWAY!! I hear sounds I have never heard before coming from my surround sound speakers and my subwoofer absolutely thumps!! You can spend more on other receivers, but give this one a try first...you’ll be satisfied for sure. Onkyo has a customer for life.

I got this to replace an older device that would not decode some of the newer video formats. It was easy to set up and works great with my Samsung smart TV. My only disappointment is that the zone 2 does not work as I had hoped. I thought it would function much like the AB switch on my old receiver, but no such luck. It plays analog audio only, so digital sound won't play on my zone 2 speakers.

I have used Onkyo A/V receivers since 2008. This is my 2nd upgrade. U would rank this model as a couple steps up from entry-level. For the price it is a great value. I’m trying to figure out the only issue I’m having with it. It sometimes switches inputs to TV from Cable/Satalite at random. Most like a configuration set for incorrectly. I Support’s WiFi, Bluetooth and several audio streaming platforms. I would recommend to someone who wants an upgrade from entry level at a reasonable cost.

Super easy set up with the enclosed microphone. Just connect your speakers and set the mic in the center of the room and listen to the test tones for a few minutes. Then connect to wifi, do a firmware update and you are rolling. All the latest sound fields and decodes, so this thing makes the movie soundtracks come alive. Pair this with a smart TV and you are sitting in a theater, at your house!

I upgraded from a Pioneer receiver that had no HDMI inputs. This receiver has that and more! Having all my HDMI devices routed through the receiver has solved a voice/picture sync issue that I had before. Sound quality is outstanding and with 5.1 surround, watching movies is much more of a cinematic experience! Adding a powered subwoofer has improved the sound even more.

So, I had an old Onkyo that I paid 1200 for back in 2003. Time to upgrade. So after lots of back and forth on models I settled on this one. The price was great and it has more than enough feature.
It's honestly amazing all the things you can do with this unit. I love the fact that I can totally control it with my phone.
The only reason it's not getting 5 stars it the instructions don't explain much and I'm still trying to figure out all the online features.

I finally went 4K and this receiver was perfect for my needs. I've always had Onkyo receivers, the TX-NR686 replaced a TX-NR609. The 609 screen had two rows, it would show the source on the top row while showing the volume etc on the bottom row. The 686 only has one row. It shows the source on the left and the volume etc on the right. As a result, the font is bigger and seems a bit stretched vertically to me. Small nitpick.. the 609 would apparently allow 4K passthrough, I never had a 4K source to test that though. The 686 is capable of actually performing video processing on 4K. It supports HDR and Dolby Vision, as well as a plethora of audio formats and processing. Plenty of HDMI inputs, and two HDMI outputs, one supporting Audio Return Channel (ARC). At it's current price for $250, this was a no brainier. The equivalent 2019 Onkyo model was more than double the price, buy why do you need more? This does everything I need it to and more. Supports Bluetooth and Airplay, and will turn itself on if you connect to it with your phone or iOS device. The other small gripe compared to the 609 is that the volume knob does not have a backlight.. that was a cool feature :) Finally, Onkyo had a problem with their receivers' HDMI boards for a while, but this problem was solved years ago. No worries about this unit failing on you!
