I have yet to get it to show 4 height speakers for 5.1.4 dolby atmos. I can get it to work as 7.1.2. I expect I have something set wrong but I am struggling to see what it is. It has a pretty good feature set and 4k passthrough. I have found the net app deezer worth using. Dollar for Dollar I think it was a good choice. It has just been hard for me to wrap my head around the setup.

Scored one of these on an open box deal, and super happy with it. upgraded from an STRDN1080 sony. That is a good one, but this one can handle more channels which I needed for an atmos setup and 2nd patio zone. LONG LIVE THE RECEIVER DOWN WITH SOUNDBARS!!!

Hard to find a Atmos 9 channel receiver at this low of a price but it works very well. The sound is a bit on the bright side likely due to the efficient amplifier they used. So far, no issues and works great.

    Frustrations in setup

I was expecting great things of this receiver, but after hooking everything up (using banana speaker plugs) and running through the setup, there was one step where it wants to check your speaker configuration and produce a test tone verifying that each speaker are connected correctly. WELL!! it produced nothing, nada, not one sound. Scratching my head, I then decided to remove my quick speaker connectors and wire it directly to the screw terminals and that should fix it for sure. No way, after spending so much time attaching each speaker wire to the screw terminals, it still didn't produce any tone. I wanted to kick that receiver, but decided to skip this test and move forward with calibration. Guess what, that produced sound... OMG... what time I wasted removing my banana plugs because of that setup tool. Finally, the system calibrated, let's test it out and play something. I have my Xbox One X setup for Dolby Atmos and I thought it sounded great until I realized the receiver isn't showing my anything but the "Game" mode I'm in. Ok, how do I know if I was really decoding Dolby Atmos or any mode at all. Display didn't show anything, the remote buttons didn't really have a good option until I found the "i" info button and the pop up box showed MultiCH 7.1 PCM mode. What???? Does that mean it's decoding or not??? When I finally found a mode button, it walked through various modes, but none were Dolby. Nothing made sense. Tried the TV input and same thing no Dolby Digital mode shown. Basically, I think the receiver only decode the digital audio to each of the channels it was designed for, but not decoding anything. Talk about frustrations after wasting so much time on this and being disappointed. I had bought the Sony DN1080 which was a 7.2 ch model and wanted the extra 2 channel for my side surrounds so I can have the 7.1.2 configuration I have. No issues with the Sony, but this Onkyo was total disappointment. Back it went to the store. I hope others have better results and do see the proper audio decoding modes displayed somewhere even if you think it sounds great, are you sure you're getting the right thing? Oh yeah and I did the firmware update which took about 30minutes and didn't change anything. This Onkyo TX-NR797 model was a solid model and the calibration and final output sounded great. Just wish it actually decoded the audio correctly. Connections are simple with quick pugs and HDMI inputs and yes, I have the right cables since they work in my old Denon and, now, Sony receiver just fine.

Good price, good quality, very easy to setup. The only thing I don't like is that the volume buttons on the remote are at the bottom of the remote. Otherwise great product!
