So glad I bought this Belgium waffle maker, even cooking with the flip capability. Quick, easy, and delicious waffles. Love that it has removable drip plate and folding handle.

Oster Flip Belgian Waffle Maker, 3874, CKSTWFB10 Disclaimer: We are not waffle connoisseurs nor do we particularly eat waffles on a regular basis - our 10 year old who loves waffles spurred this purchase. First, there are many very helpful reviews online on the use of this iron which helped make our first foray into the art of waffle making a success - thanks to all. After two weeks here we are: For our first batch we used the remainder of a box of Pioneer Brand Original Buttermilk Pancake & Waffle mix pancake/waffle mix. We followed the box directions for waffles, then sprayed the cold iron with Canola cooking oil, set the temperature midway between medium and high then waited an extra 30 seconds or more after the green ready light came on to assure the iron was fully heated for the first batch then poured 3/4 cup mix into the iron, covering the center peak edges then spreading it around with a spatula to cover the remaining peaks at the edges then closed the lid and flipped it. The batter was nice and thick and not a drop spilled out the sides of the iron during cooking although a small amount seeped into the edge. When the green light came on again we flipped back, opened the lid and easily released a perfectly shaped and colored waffle. While they came out clean and looking great we threw them out as per the instructions recommending that you discard the first batch because the new iron “may emit slight smoke or odor” so we didn’t cut into or taste them, however the birds loved them. For our second batch we opened a box of Hungry Jack Complete Wheat Blends Pancake & Waffle Mix and made a couple waffles with similar results as above. We weren’t overly thrilled with either the texture or the flavor so we next tried an internet recipe by Googling “best waffle mix” and chose the simplest recipe we found: http://allrecipes.com/recipe/22180/waffles-i/ We may have over mixed this batter as it came out much thinner than either of the box mixes above. Using the same measure of 3/4 cups of batter we ended up with a bit of a mess as some amount of batter escaped and bubbled out the edges of the iron during cooking, much of which spilled beyond the edges of the included drip pan, thus the reviewer who recommended putting down a sheet of tinfoil under the unit before cooking was spot on, however our iron cleaned up very nicely regardless. Using less than 3/4 cups of batter in the iron resulted in an incomplete waffle so we kept going with 3/4 cup of mix which provided five (5) full waffles. The result? We unanimously concluded that these were absolutely 100% superior tasting to the Hungry Jack box mix with the benefit of a crispy exterior and soft interior which is what we were looking for. Next time we’ll try this recipe using half white wheat flour and half all purpose flour adding a little extra to thicken the batter and substitute buttermilk for 2% milk. We also followed another reviewer’s directions by preheating our oven to warm, removing the waffles from the iron directly onto a cooking rack in the oven to rest, but not stacking them. If you place your hot waffle directly from the iron onto a plate moisture will build up under it rendering it soggy. This was an excellent idea and worked very well. The reason we chose the simplest recipe was that we don’t always have a lot of time to cook so we frequently fall back on the quickest, easiest cooking methods and recipes. I’m confident there are many other wonderful waffle recipes out there, including the Classic Waffles recipe in the enclosed User Guide, and we intend to try them but with time an issue we have found our go-to recipe for now to keep and to tweak. We highly recommend this waffle maker, a great value which heats quickly, produces very nicely cooked waffles, cleans up easily, and stores vertically taking up a minimum amount of space.
