I came from a Otterbox defender on an iPhone 6S + to this and the protection has been just as good for me. I don't drop my phone as much as some and I don't run over my phone so this has been more than adequate protection along with a ZAGG screen protector. When my wife upgraded her phone I bought her a clear one. She drops her phone a LOT and no issues. There are always exceptions to protection abilities but so far so good!

My niece is using this as it was purchased to protect her new phone. She likes the sparkles and it shows off the cool green phone she bought. I have used both otter box and spec products and would take the otter box instead. It last longer and I feel there is just a little extra protection if you drop your phone. Little more protection for your screen in my opinion as is a bit thicker around the screen. Would recommend for any phone.
