Next Level Health & Fitness Monitoring Wearable!

I have really liked how health and fitness wearables have progressed over the years from simple step trackers to taking in all facets of your life so you can have a great idea of your health. The Oura Ring Gen3 is a really fantastic approach at offering you so much about your health in such a small package.
INTRO & SIZING:
- First would like to say, I wore this 24/7 for 3 weeks straight to really get a good feel of it and I think that’s the way to go! That is when you start to really get trends and your Oura will have enough data about you.
- The sizing for the rings do not come in half sizes, making you maybe debate whether to go a little bigger or a little smaller. I wear a 7.5 ring and decided to go with a size 8 and I am very happy with my choice! It is the perfect comfort, not too tight, and I could wear it all day and night with no issues.
PROS:
- Setup is very very easy! Just make sure you have the Oura app downloaded, and the ring is ready to go. The app is essential since the ring does not have a screen obviously, and overall I thought the app was really great.
- The comfort of the ring was also a huge pro for me! It feels weird at first since the ring just has a different design than normal rings, but you get used to it really quickly. And it’s good to have that comfort since I wore it literally all the time - including in bed which is a big selling feature.
- The battery life is impressive to say the least. Wearing it 24/7, I would get about 6 days before I would need to charge. And once you do charge it, it charges quickly!
- I also thought the ring was very durable - it is very lightweight so I was worried it might show wear and tear but I did not have a single scratch or issue with it in my 3 weeks of wearing. Oura says that the ring will scratch over time but no issues for me so far.
- Another huge selling point of this ring is how it doesn’t feel like a typical fitness tracker. It’s not something big and bulky or buzzing at you all the time, it’s just out of the way and doing its job. And since most people wears rings, it was a very comfortable easy thing to do!
- Now getting to the fitness part of it, the Oura does a great job! You can start a workout from your phone app or Oura can sync with your Apple Watch workouts if needed. The heart monitoring along with tracking your movements really helped me get a better look at my physical activity throughout the day and what I need to be working on.
- The sleep tracking is incredible as well! Tracks how long you slept and what phases of sleep you are in. Really liked that as well.
- I also really liked the “readiness” score. Essentially Oura takes how active you are, how well you slept, and if you also rested and didn’t overdo it. Based on all of these things they have us a score letting you know how “ready” you were today. I liked that holistic view of everything put together.
CONS:
- Once your battery life gets below 25%, the Oura app will frequently remind you to charge it but I found it could really last another couple of days without charging. However, once you get below a certain battery level it stops doing a few tracking things.
- I wish the app would let you take a heart rate reading at a specific time. The Oura just monitors it throughout the day but there is not an option to “take a rate right now” so to speak.
BOTTOM LINE:
- I think the Oura is truly a great fitness/health tracking option for a lot of people. It offers a lot of data on your health, helps you be more fit, and comes in a lightweight comfortable ring design that will appeal to those who maybe do not want to have to wear a wrist tracker all the time. I think Oura can continue to offer more features through its software but the Gen3 is truly next level!

This review is based on two weeks of wearing the Oura Gen3 Ring.
To start at the beginning of the process, the first step to purchasing an Oura ring is to use the sizing chart. Mine arrived within three days of ordering, and contained plastic sizing rings from size 6, up to size 13 (whole sizes only, see photo). The sizing guide advised to find your size and wear it for 24 hours to make sure the fit is correct. For me, I normally wear between a 6.5 and 7 on my right hand ring finger. I went with the 7, and although a bit tight over the knuckle, it was the most appropriate size. Once you determine what size you want, follow the QR on the sizing package and it will take you directly to an online form to enter in your desired size. The process was quick and efficient, however I'm disappointed the rings didn't come in half sizes, as I struggled to find a secure fit that was easy to get on and off.
After submitting my online sizing, the ring arrived 6 days later. In the package is the ring, a charging stand, USB-A to USB-C charging cable, quick start guide, and users manual. To get started the ring needs to be charged, and the Oura app should be downloaded. I have an Android phone and have had zero issues with the app over the two weeks that I have worn the ring. Note that the app is required to view your data. To get started you enter in your health goals (be focused, be productive, improve athletic performance, develop learning skills / creativity, manage stress levels, and improve health). Then put in how you sleep, things that affect your sleep (such as a hectic lifestyle) and your birthdate, gender, height, and weight.
The tabs in the app include a home screen, readiness tab, sleep tab, activity tab, and explore tab. On the home tab is relevant information, such as bedtime approaching in the evening, your activity goal, heart rate, workouts, female cycle prediction, readiness score, sleep score. These are all quick views that can be clicked on to see trend graphs. The readiness tab gives a break down of resting heart rate (HR), HR variability, body temp variability, and respiratory rate. All of these measurements roll up into a readiness score. There is also a details graph that shows the past 10 hours of heart rate and average variability.
The sleep tab monitors four stages of sleep - awake, RME, light, and deep. A sleep score, with contributors, and a graph of the previous nights sleep are all available on this tab. Average blood oxygen percentage, breathing regularity and lowest heart rate, and average HRV (both redundant from readiness tab) are additional data points on this tab.
The activity tab is what I expect out of most fitness trackers, it shows activity goal and progress to goal, total calories burned, distance traveled, steps, and an activity score. Lastly a histogram of activity for the day, workouts (needs to be manually entered, or may be automatically detected). The final tab is the explore tab, it has four areas of audio guides: meditate, breathe, sleep, and learn. I didn't find any of these to be something I will use, but completely user preference.
The app is a good layout, some screens have duplicate data, but overall I give it a B+ for ease of use, navigability, and intuitiveness. From the app you can see the battery level, put the ring in airplane mode, see help files, view the ring size, firmware, model, and complete soft and factory resets.
My overall rating of the app is that it's good, and I'd recommend it for the average user. A solid 'B' for capturing and displaying the data that interests the average user. I found that the sleep data was close to a name brand fitness tracker I wear on the same arm as the ring. Typically within 30 minutes, for a 7 hour sleeping period, and usually shows less "awake" time than my wrist tracker. Oxygen saturation, skin temp, and resting heart rate were all trending the same between the ring and the other tracker. I found a bit of difference in the temperature variability measurement on trends, but I believe the ring to be more accurate. I do like the reminders to move every hour, meet daily activity goals and pay attention to recovery.
As far as activity tracking, this ring is middle of the pack, and below the mainstream wearable fitness trackers on the market today. I found that the steps were typically 1-2k under my fitness tracker, but never a standard offset. On average, my 20k steps days the ring was closer than my 10k step days. Also the ring rarely picks up my workouts, I work out 5x weekly always starting with a mile jog and then moving into strength training. The ring will sometimes pick up the run, and never the strength training, whereas my fitness tracker will get it all due to being slightly elevated HR during the entire duration of the workout, not just the run.
As far as the ring itself, I didn't find it super comfortable to wear due to being not having half sizes available. Even though the sizing ring fit comfortably, the actual ring is slightly smaller than is comfortable, but the next size up was way too big in the sizing rings. The side of the ring is thick and overly bulky for someone with petite hands. Lastly, the three bumps in the ring sit on your skin, so you will want to take it off and dry your finger after showers, otherwise the skin tends to stay very moist. As for battery life, I've had to charge, on average, once a week with normal use, and each charge has taken just over an hour. As someone who lifts weights, I was worried that the ring would scratch and pit during my weight training workouts, however after two weeks of lifting and wearing during farm work, there is only very minor scratches on the palm side of the ring (see photo). To be fair, the instructions have a user caution about the ring becoming scratched from weight lifting.
Bottom line, the ring is comfortable and light enough to be worn 24/7, even though there is room for improvement to reduce bulk. The fitness tracking aspect is good, but not great, and the other tracking aspects such as sleep and general health stats seem to be accurate. The value of this ring is all in what the user needs. This would not be my recommendation for strength training or athletic conditioning tracking. I do recommend this ring for tracking overall wellbeing, improving sleep habits, and general user health information.

Beautiful activity tracker on your finger

I’ve had my eyes on the Oura ring for some time and now have opportunity to try it out. If you are into
tracking some key stats about your health (who isn’t these days), then the Oura Ring is a good option to be considered.
Unlike other options, watches for example, the Oura ring is significantly smaller. Since it’s a ring, the
exactness of the size is extremely important. To that end, Oura does a great job of stressing that
importance and have sizing kits to help find the perfect size. Then also have videos to go along with the sizing kit, to ensure you select the right size for accurate measurements. The ring kit includes 8 sizes, ranging from size 6 to 13. Select your size and try the plastic replica for a bit to see how it feels. Too tight and/or uncomfortable, go bigger. Too loose and/gaps between the ring and your finger, go smaller. Ideally you’d wear the sizing ring for 24 hrs to be certain you have the correct size. Oura suggests usage on the index finger, but your middle or ring finger on either hand will also work. Thankfully both of my index fingers are very similar in size, as is the ring finger on my right hand, so I can switch it around if needed. Keep in mind that it should be comfortable. I did start with a sizer that was too small, and ended up breaking skin on one finger. If its uncomfortable, its too tight.
Once you know your size, you can complete your order and soon you’ll start tracking. When the Oura
arrives, it come in a small box that contains the ring and its USB-C charger. Mine did arrive with a
sufficient charge to get started. First thing you’ll notice, if you’ve never seen this thing, is its beautifully
made. I got the ring in silver and I love the way it looks. Since its always going to be on you, I think that is important.
First thing you’ll need to do is download the Oura app, which is needed to activate you ring and is where you will be able to see your personal stats. The Oura ring tracks heart rate, breathing, activity levels, temperature, etc and uses the data it tracks to deliver 3 scores to you daily: Readiness, Sleep, & Activity. The app is where you will see these scores and where these scores are tracked over time to deliver insights into your health. This aspect of the Oura experience is excellent. Of course you’ll get
notifications on your phone/watch when you’ve been sitting/still for too long, or to motivate you
towards the evolving activity goal Oura suggests for you based on treads and your scores from the
previous day. Bad night of sleep and Oura will suggest that you take it a little easier or go to sleep a little earlier. There is also automatic detection for certain activities. Go for a walk and the next time you check the app, it will likely ask if you went for a walk. Same thing with naps, which is pretty cool. Here’s the rub, to get the full experience you need to subscribe. The full experience also adds in many guided audio sessions for things like meditation, help falling asleep, breathing, & more. Otherwise, I think you only receive your 3 scores daily. The cost of membership is 5.99 per month and the first month is included with purchase. This aspect of the Oura ring may turn some people off. I’m about 2 weeks into my journey with Oura and I haven’t yet decided that I will stay subscribed for the long term. What I’ve seen so far is nice, but I’m not sure it is worth the monthly fee yet.
One other key thing to highlight is the battery life of the Oura ring compared to other fitness tracking
devices. Oura says that you can get a week out of a single charge and I haven’t even gotten close to a
dreaded battery low message I’m used to getting from my watch. I typically will charge the ring while I’m showering and the battery usually fills up pretty much 100%. I think the lowest I’ve seen it is around 80% charged.
With Oura ring, you are getting a beautiful, high quality health tracking device in a small form factor and with outstanding battery life compared to other typical wearables. If you subscribe to the app service, you get more insights based on your particular trends, but if you don’t subscribe, you get what appears to be significantly less data back. The ring itself isn’t cheap, starting at approx. $300, depending on style and finish. Adding an additional month charge just makes it more expensive to own. I feel It’s important to know that going into the purchase. If that doesn’t cause a concern then you can’t go wrong with the Oura ring.

Quality Health Tracking Tool

When the Oura Rings first came out, I was really interested in getting one. I've been using health tracking wearables for over 14 years now and have been using a health watch since 2014. However, I really don't like wearing jewelry (or watches...I haven't worn my wedding band in over 20 years), so I was interested in seeing if I could put up with a fitness ring.
First, and probably most important, take Oura's recommendation of wearing the sizing ring for a couple of days to make sure you get the right size. I didn't wear it continuously and I got the wrong size ring for my index finger. Not a big deal since it fits correctly on my other hand. When I tried the sizer ring, it felt like the correct size but if I would have worn it longer I think I would have gone down a size.
Once you get your Oura, the first thing I did was download the app for my iPhone. Pretty straight-forward and connecting the ring to the phone was quick as well. Instructions provided were self-explanatory, but I never had to use them since I've connected dozens of things to my phone in the past and it wasn't any different.
First thoughts when wearing the ring is that it is really big! I mean, I don't like wearing my wedding band because it annoys me and it isn't as big as the Oura. I really had concerns whether I would use it long term since it was so big.
The next thing I noticed is that the band isn't completely round...one side is flattened a little which helps identify the side that needs to stay on the palm side of your finger (where the sensors are). If you get one size too large, the ring will keep spinning on your finger and the sensors won't be aligned correctly. I had this problem initially until I switched to the other hand where the ring fits correctly. It still spins a little but not too bad and it's easy to figure out the correct way to place it with the flat side out.
The ring comes with a free month of service and it costs $5.99 per month if you choose to subscribe. Per the Oura site, if you don't extend the trial period you still "have access to 3 simple daily scores: Sleep, Readiness, and Activity, as well as interactive and educational Explore content." I haven't seen what I would have access to if I don't extend, so can't really comment much on that.
The app is intuitive to use, even with a lot of content. There are 5 content areas: Home, Readiness, Sleep, Activity, and Explore that you can navigate with at the bottom. I would rate the app as a 5 since it is easy to get around and quickly find what you are looking for.
The three areas I found most useful are the Readiness, Sleep, and Activity scores. Essentially, those three numbers give you an idea of where you need to focus. My activity scores are always in Optimal zone, but my sleep score hasn't hit that level yet. Readiness tells you whether you are ready for another workout or whether you should take it a little easier. It seems like the algorithm takes a few days to understand what your typical day is to determine what is optimal for you.
Overall, I rated this four stars since I think they did a great job of identifying the features that are important to track from a health perspective. What I don't like about it is that it is still pretty big and you will notice it on your finger. Since I do not like wearing jewelry, I knew this was going to be a problem for me but I will keep wearing it for the foreseeable future (it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be). Before signing up for the service, I plan to see what comes for free and make my decision after that.

Big Wearable in a Small Package

The Oura Ring Gen 3 Heritage is a wearable device with a stately design and loaded with impressive features. Built to monitor your sleep, activity, and overall health, the Oura makes an excellent choice for those looking to improve their health and wellness.
The Oura Ring is comfortable and discreet for a fitness/health wearable. It’s made from lightweight titanium and is available in 8 rings sizes, 5 colors and 2 styles. The ring is also water resistant up to 328 feet, making it suitable for use in a variety of environments.
The Oura can also provide insights into your daily habits and behaviors, helping you to make better decisions. It’s 15 sensors can monitor blood oxygen, hours slept, resting heart rate, skin temperature and steps taken.
To get started, you’ll want to take advantage of the sizing kit. It comes with sample rings that will help you find the perfect fit – no guessing involved. Finding a snug but comfortable fit will ensure that the sensors can accurately read all the necessary information about you.
In the two weeks I’ve been using the Oura, I’ve been impressed by the actionable information made available regarding my sleep and physical activity. The companion app is easy to use and data rich. I’ve already made changes to my sleep habits that have resulted in a noticeable improvement in my energy level and daily alertness.
The charger is USB-C and easy to use. Just place the ring on the unit and within a couple of hours you’ll have a fully charged ring. If you wear it 24/7 like me, you should be able to get at least 5 days on a single charge. I found myself taking it off and dropping it on the charger for 30 minutes every couple of days. It helped me avoid long downtimes and it just became part of a bedtime routine.
I’m a little disappointed in the $6/month membership fee, 30 days included with purchase, but I understand the need for sustainability. I don’t think I’ve used a wearable in the past that required a subscription, so I was a little surprised when I looked into it. I’ll most likely subscribe for a full year to really test it out. However, I can see this being a deal breaker for anyone not willing to commit the additional $72/year.

I’m not sure whether it was the actual Oura ring or the included charger, but it does not work. I tried to return it but I just barely missed the 15 day return window. Best Buy said there was nothing they could do, so I wasted $400 on this item that is useless.

I have been a long-time Apple Watch user and am also a Registered Nurse. Suffice it to say, I LOVE keeping track of my vital signs like my HR and SPO2 throughout the day! The only deficit I found in my utilization of the Apple Watch is that as power efficient as it is, it will not make it through a 24-hour day and therefore has to go on the charger each night when I go to bed. Another deficit of the Apple Watch is that despite the alternative bands I have purchased and used with it, it is still a rather industrial and techy-looking accessory and does not go well with business professional attire in many circumstances.
Enter the Oura Ring: Here is a health metric tracking device that not only holds up to its advertised role like a champ for almost a week straight of use between charges, but it is also a very good-looking accessory that does not particularly clash with any attire I wear on a weekly basis.
The process of ordering the ring was really cool. I was able to get the free sizing kit (ring sizes 6-13) sent straight to me, and once I had lived with the size 12 ring on my left index finger for a full 24 hours, I determined that was the preferred size I would like to go with. Of note, it is really important that you use the sizing kit, because the size while close to traditional wedding band style ring sizes differs slightly due to the sensor nubs on the inside of the ring. You may also find as you are running through your 24-hour testing period with the ring that you want to try a different size ring on a different finger. For example, I had started with the size 12 on my right index finger but quickly found that since that is my dominant hand, the ring was interfering too much with using my phone and other annoying little tasks. It was much better suited to my non-dominant hand!
Once done with choosing my ring size, I was able to log in to the Oura ring size portal with my account email, and the ring arrived at my doorstep with 3-day UPS shipping in very discrete, non-descript external packaging.
The process from the arrival and opening of the package entailed some very easy setup using the Oura App on my iPhone. I was prompted through the whole setup and was even made aware of a firmware update available on the main page of the app.
Since then, getting used to this ring in my daily routine has been really cool. It takes it a few weeks to get a good idea of your baseline heart rate (HR), sleep, and SPO2, so just give it some time to get used to you. You can spot-check your HR anytime just by going into the app and tapping the heart icon on the Heart Rate card. You will be instructed to hold still while it determines your heart rate.
An important thing to note is that as of the writing of this review, the ring does not carry the ability to “broadcast” your heart rate real time to devices like a Peloton Bike. It can communicate across your Apple Health app to look at the HR tracking during your exercise period retroactively, but you aren’t going to get a real time monitoring of your HR on the Peloton bike like you would with your Apple Watch or Whoop if I am not mistaken.
One of my favorite aspects of this ring is tracking my quality of sleep. Thus far, I have found that the ring seems highly accurate in tracking my restfulness, nighttime wakeups, and overall quality of sleep. The other night, it was way too hot in our bedroom, and I was tossing and turning. I remember thinking to myself, “The ring is probably going to show me tossing a lot and waking up”. Sure enough, it did! It also demonstrated how, as compared to the prior night, I had far less deep sleep due to this tossing and turning and experienced quite a lot of light sleep in its place. This definitely reflected in my performance during the day after as I was a little more sluggish and less refreshed when waking up. This ring can serve as a really good tool to help you address your sleeping habits, including factors like whether you are drinking caffeine too late in the day. Are you not sleeping in a cool enough room or comfortable enough bed and therefore tossing and turning a bunch? The ring has a tracking feature on the app where you “tag” when you drink your caffeinated beverages or consume other forms of caffeine which allows you to get a readout from the app if it thinks caffeine may have reduced your restfulness during your sleep. Another thing I like about the ring’s sleep tracking is that it tracks your naps really well too, and it will accordingly increase your readiness score and sleep score on the app! So, you have a bad night of sleep? Take a 25-minute cat nap to perk up a bit and the app recognizes that and updates your score to encourage your efforts!
A couple things to take note of. You really will want to read through the article linked in the app “Caring for your Oura Ring” .There are a lot of important tips on there for keeping the ring in tip-top condition, such as trying to keep the battery level from dropping below 30% and making sure not to leave it on the charger for more than a week straight (even that is pushing it). As high-tech as this ring is, it is still depending on a rechargeable battery and requires user awareness if you want to maximize the battery life of your new ring. I have found that I like to take both my wedding band and my Oura ring off when I shower so that 20-30 minutes of shower and clean up time at night is perfect for placing the Oura ring on its charger and getting it topped off while I do my personal hygiene routine before bed!
Another thing to take note of is that the stainless finish of the ring I received is prone to smudging and fingerprint collection. Keep that thing wiped off if you want it to shine and glisten in all its handsome countenance from your digit!
Altogether, this ring gets my highest recommendation as a fitness and health tracking device! You are not going to be upset you bought this. Just be aware fo the $5.99 monthly subscription fee for the ongoing app and tracking features so that it doesn’t surprise you! Best wishes and good health to you!

amazing addition to my daily routine. It’s sleek, lightweight, and comfortable enough to wear all day and night without even noticing it. Battery life is excellent, lasting several days on a single charge, which makes it very convenient.
