About 5 years ago, my husband and I bought a beautiful 65" Samsung flat screen. We kept talking about getting a DVD player, because the one we had for the other tv wouldn't work on the new one. But, all we did was talk, until finally we thought, "that's it. We're getting one." I'm so glad we went with the Panasonic. It's so user friendly and the picture is beautiful. It cost more than some of the others, but I think it will be worth it.
Thank you for the glowing review and the 5-star rating. We're delighted to have provided you with a positive experience. -M

Wow what a picture and amazing audio!

I bought this player after having a mostly mediocre experience with a Sony 4k player. With the Sony the picture wasn't that great, movies looked okay and audio was its biggest issue. The player didn't project audio very well, no matter what I tried dialogue wasn't clear and would often be muddied out with special effects and background noises. I tried everything! Every setting on the player, my sound bar and my TV. But nothing worked, I happen to be in Best Buy looking for an HDMI cable and stumbled on this Panasonic player. Back in my childhood I remember Panasonic was the go brand! They produced a superior product compared to Sony and most other companies. I went ahead and picked up the box which put a smile on my face and brought back memories of my Dad's home theater system which was mostly Panasonic components.
I decided to give this Panasonic player a try and well.....Oh my God what have I been missing all these years! The picture is super clean and sharp, the colors look amazing and the audio! It's so well balanced and even! I've literally touched nothing with the audio and it sounds perfect! There's so many settings to play with so I have to learn what they all do. But if you're serious about audio and video this player is a MUST HAVE! Oh and one more this is player also doesn't use one of the bulky power bricks like the Sony uses. It's just a regular plug which saves space.
So don't skip over this Panasonic player, they haven't lost their edge like Sony has. They still make an amazing product!

Amazing value in an upscaling blu-ray player

I've had this one for a bit over a year, and it's done everything it was asked with no issues. The video quality is very good, as far as I'm concerned, though admittedly I'm a casual watcher not measuring pixel size with calipers.
Most importantly, unlike the Sony x800 I had, it will actually finish a movie most of the time, where the Sony would lock up, and/or crash multiple times, whether the source was a Blu-ray, 4k Blu-ray or DVD. The only time this has ever failed to play a disc was when my wife put it on top of another disk that was already in it.
One thing the other reviewers haven't mentioned yet is that this thing is also amazing at streaming. When I made my initial purchase, I hadn't paid attention that it could even do that. We had several animated movies that we had ripped so that my daughter could watch them in her room without messing up the disks, and it plays all of them with no issues, in quite nice quality.
I honestly came here because I'm considering buying ANOTHER one just to be able to add the streaming capability in another room, and ended up leaving the review.
The Sony unit that was twice as expensive didn't meet my expectations and despite hundreds of users with the same issue, they refused to fix it. This Panasonic is a much better player (even when the Sony was working) at a much lower cost, and has given me no trouble at all.
Thank you for your feedback. We are happy to hear you had a positive experience with the PANASONIC product! We value your input and encourage you to let us know more details about your experience with us.

An easy win for a video player! Love Panasonic!

This is a great 4K blu-ray player and it's made even better by comparing it to existing 4K blu-ray players. Samsung got out of making blu-ray & 4K blu-ray players a few years ago, Philip's has trouble consistently making reliable units, in part to now being owned & manufactured by Funai. LG isn't a bad option, as long as you either have a separate DVD player or no DVD video collection. Sony has 2 key models. The most affordable is extremely competitively priced to this however has a known defect that Sony refuses to acknowledge, much less attempt to fix, in that many 4K movies have freezing issues. So avoid a known glitchy unit. Sony's other offering is better in that regard, but is also considerably more expensive.
See? It's a simple comparison that takes a decent model like this and really pushes it to the top of the list overall. The only downside I see is that this model is rarely on sale, and Panasonic's somewhat more basic (and more affordable) model 4K blu-ray player is like trying to find a PS5 the day before Xmas. Still, for what's here there's really plenty to love. Definitely recommend for anyone looking for a 4K blu-ray player.

The 4k picture quality is as good as advertised! The upscaling exceeded my expectations. Can't evaluate the streaming because I haven't used it that way. I have a 4K smart tv with a high tech Android box. But for my purpose this Blue-ray/DVD is a steal at this price

Great player with The BEST picture quality ever but....
User interface is a bit cumbersome for those who like to customize their experience.
Build quality is minimal for the price point, makes the player a little noisy.
Panasonic has disabled the NTSC~PAL video converter for Region A & 1 units which made mine USELESS for my needs. Very RUDE. I have many Region 0 PAL DVDs in my collection.
WE NEED AN ALL REGION OPTION PLAYER AND PANASONIC REFUSES TO MEET THIS NEED.
I am therefore NOT IMPRESSED.

So far so good! Bought two of these last week while they were on sale and have watched several DVD, bluray, and 4K videos so far. They have all played well and look great! We didn't notice a major difference in the picture quality compared to our older Samsung 4K player, but the Panasonic is SO MUCH quieter during playback. Several 4K discs that made a loud vibrating sound in our Samsung player were silent during playback in the Panasonic. I'm super sensitive to sound, so that alone was worth the price to me. Highly recommended!

Had just bought a Sony 800/m2 player 3 month ago, returned it in 28 days for another due to freezing picture, well 60 days later same issue, so its Junk. Went and bought this panasonic and wow what a difference. Picture is Billiant, sound is great. We have a Bose 600 sound system. This player is Awesome. Way better than then Sony junk we wasted our money on. This player is all u need.

People are taking stars off just because of the way this looks, which is just stupid. No one's gonna care that this is a small black box when it's letting them watch the John Wick trilogy in amazing 4k Blu-ray HDR10+! If, like our family room TV, yours doesn't have Dolby Vision, then this is perfect. If you do, and you want DV, then save up for the 820. If not, you can still set the audio mode to 'bitstream' and to let your receiver/soundbar system decode Atmos!

Best Blu Ray Player for the right price!!

I was trying to decide between this one here and the UB-820, only main difference between the two is this one doesn’t support Dolby Vision, in all honesty I really can’t tell the difference between Dolby Vision and HDR10+. They look identical. 4K movies on this is wonderful and Dolby Atmos is great as well. The 420, 820, and 9000 all use the same processor so picture quality is identical. Save your money and go with the 420. Unless Dolby Vision is just absolutely 100% a must for you.
We are glad to hear that you are enjoying the product, thank you for the 5 stars! -A

A very high quality product with a value price. Yes you can buy cheaper players (and much more expensive ones) but this one hits the sweet spot for performance and value.

Works as advertised., Why not a 5. let's see what happens in 6 months. I suspect it would be a 5 star. but hey, they want an answer now. so, it gets a 4 star. (Hedging my bet)
This replaced a 20 YO DVD player. video is much better than the old one. (Go figure).
delivered on time. check back in 6 months and see if I update to a 5.
I suspect it will be.
We are glad to hear that you are enjoying the product, thank you for sharing your experience with us and the community! We hope in 6 months it will earn the 5 stars from you. -A

Does what it should - plays BD discs

This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.
First off, I don’t have any idea if this player is better or worse than other BD players. Maybe all BD players at this point are all pretty much the same, but I don’t know one way or the other. I’m giving this 5 stars because it has played the few discs I’ve put into it without any issues. It just works.
We are glad to hear that you are enjoying the product, thank you for the 5 stars! -G

The Panasonic DP-UB420-K provides everything I was looking for in a DVD player including 4K playback and even the ability to play music CDs. The quality appears to be good especially for the price.
