There's been a lot of reviews about this game, so I'm not gonna get into it too deeply.
The graphics, while simplistic, are very effective in presenting this charming world. The characters are likable for the most part and the dialog is rather witty. The story is interesting, but nothing I'd rave about.
The combat engine might deter some players that expect the same as the previous versions. It's more like puzzle-solving rather than turn-based. I liked it at first but did become a bit tedious at some points. It's a good thing that there are other mechanics spread all over the game and this is not the longest RPG, clocking in at about 30 or so hours.
While it may not be as good as past Paper Mario games (in my opinion) I still enjoyed it. It didn't hook me as much as it should and I ended up playing in sessions. I am happy that Nintendo is keeping the Paper Mario series alive and look forward to the next one.

I'm so glad Nintendo continues to support the Paper Mario franchise -- this was just another terrific entry for it. The writing is some of the most witty and well-humored I've seen in a video game in a very long time, the gameplay was creative, the story was inviting. The battles tend to overstay their welcome, I found myself avoiding them more often than not as I got toward the end of the game (it actually made me want a leveling mechanic, rather than just upgrading equipment options), but the story really drove me through to finish the game. It's an excellent entry into the PM franchise.

Mario has been Nintendo’s mascot for over thirty years and is easily one of the most recognizable of gaming icons. Considering this, it can be possible for someone to be a bias concerning his games. When it comes to the well crafted list of Paper Mario games, I cannot say which game is better because I love them all for different reasons but, I can definitely say that playing through the Origami King was not a tear-ible experience. Before I go into what I like about the game, I should explain what the game is. Mario and his brother, Luigi, have been invited to an origami festival. When they get to the town, they find out that nobody is there. It turns out that the origami king had invaded the town with the intentions of turning the flat-paper world into origami. So Mario sets off to stop the origami king and save his friends. But, to do that, he first needs to find the 5 giant streamers that keep him from entering the castle. Unlike the first 2 games-which were rpg adventure games, this game is more of a puzzle adventure game. Some people would think that’s a bad thing, but I think it’s a decent change of pace. As for what I like about the game, I honestly don’t know where to start. I guess the first thing I should talk about is the creativity throughout the game. Every time I saw a new enemy or a Vellumental (a type of boss in the game), I always asked myself “how long did it take them to make these models”, or “is there any way I can make of these for myself”. Every area had something that stood out more than the others. The red and blue streamer areas were both visually stunning and had plenty of creative events. The Big Sho’ Theater was one of my favorite moments. The yellow streamer area had the best music in the entire game. I would stop playing for a while so I could listen to the music in Shroom City. The purple streamer area had really fun gameplay, especially at the diamond island, where you had to go through the temples of power, wisdom, and courage (which definitely doesn’t remind me of the Legend of Zelda games... not at all). The green streamer area had one of my favorite boss fights. I loved how the scissors decided to make thing fair by putting on a sleeve. And if you broke that sleeve, they would not hesitate to unleash an attack the would instantly lead to a game over. From the beginning, all the way to the end, this game made me laugh, cry, and it even startled me a few times. I can understand why some people would miss the RPG style of the old games, or the original characters that would stand out more than others, but that doesn’t make this game any less enjoyable.

As someone who enjoyed the earlier Paper Mario games & held no interest in the later ones, I was cautious about Origami King leading up to its release. I am happy to say that I really enjoyed this game & would recommend it to anyone who skipped the previous entries!
It still has its fair share of problems (battle system is either too simple or frustrating, yet ultimately pointless; story falls apart a bit near the end), but its high points (environments, humor & dialogue, OMG THE MUSIC) outweigh the low for me!
If you’re looking for a new game on Switch, Paper Mario: The Origami King is worth it 1000-fold!

Do you like puzzles and strategy? Do you like boss battles that involve memory challenges, matching games, and sheer tests of your patience? Then this is the game for you!
Overall, Paper Mario: Origami King was fun. It is a nice departure from reality and is pretty wholesome overall and fit for young kids to adults who are kids at heart. I spent about a month playing this game from start to finish and overall, I enjoyed the experience and didn't regret buying it. That being said, this is not a flawless game with some aspects of it that will leave you scratching your head or even pulling your hair out.
Many people went into this game hoping for a sequel to Paper Mario: Thousand Year Door. I haven't played that game but from what I've read, this isn't at all a great follow up to that installment. Others wanted this to be along the lines of the fan favorite Mario RPG from the Super Nintendo. I played that game, loved it, and can honestly say this one is nothing like that, either. All of the battles in this game are turned based, similar to Mario RPG, but in order to beat the various challenges, it comes down to how well you can organize the battle board. Special items in this game end up having little value and with an abundance of coins, you'll easily be able to buy whatever special items you need. Still, the game drags on and feels monotonous at times. Each boss battle is just a matter of, again, how you arrange the board and special spaces. There are parts of the game that never feel fully realized or thought out. After you beat the game, you're hoping there's more to do or an added adventure–but there isn't. The credits roll and the game resets itself to the scene right before you go into the final battle. Unlike other RPG Mario games, your team is sparse this go around. There's no Luigi to join your team (he's in the game and makes appearances), no Princess, no Toad, Yoshi or special characters like Geno and Mallow–it's just you and Olivia for most of the game with brief stents of short-run characters with little to no personality.
Overall, fun, a great way to past the time but the format of the game–having to battle bosses and bad guys through re-arranging the board–makes the game feel dull and flat. Also, the lack of playable content after you beat the game, unlike Mario Rabbids for the Switch, feels like a missed opportunity as well. It would be nice to have a DLC come out to extend the life of the game but it doesn't seem likely. With the puzzles and all the reading required to get through the game, I don't think young kids would enjoy this but teens on up will enjoy it.

Let me preface this by saying that I'm one of those hardcore fans of Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door, and while I am vehemently against the drastic gameplay shift the series has taken since then, this is in no way a bad game. It is actually a great game.
I greatly enjoyed the story and environments and the music was top shelf quality. The gameplay was also quite good, not exactly what I wanted but still very imaginative and it gets the job done at times. Knocking a point off for lack of challenge as you can just buy your way through the puzzles during the fights with the in-game cash.
Lots of charm and very self aware at times. Would definitely recommend if you don't mind it being a non-RPG.

The new battle system has a decent learning curve but once you get the hang of it, it’s not too bad. But overall it’s a great story.

I bought this game for my son for his birthday earlier this year. He has beaten it twice. He loves the Mario and the “paper” games. I suggest this game for anyone who enjoys RPGs and Mario.

This game looks amazing, has loads of charm, is extremely funny and well-written but yet falls short and was disappointing. Yes, I finished the game but it felt like finishing an okay book and not one you'd want to recommend or revisit. The game play is just not that fun and is way too easy. I felt my hand was held the entire game. The new battle mechanic is a chore. The boss battles were fun at first but just don't make up for it in the long run. Here's hoping the re-release 1,000 Year Door one day.

I've played all of the Paper Mario games and this one is equally fun! The combat system is a little difficult to grasp in the beginning, but the game is so much fun. If you are a fan of Super Mario, then you will love this game. There are some great musical numbers!

This paper mario for the most part is simple as far as game play. They do a nice job of changing up boss fights to give you variation but nothing too difficult. The colors, music, story and character development are fantastic. There are jokes and easter eggs eve.rywhere.
I played this game to chill from the ultra competitive games I play. It was relaxing and rewarding at the same time. I dont replay many campaigns anymore but I would for this. Loved it

This game is so much fun! My kids and I had a blast playing through the whole thing! The animation is second to none. The story is fantastic! So many funny moments! There is so much to do and you won't want to put it down. The new ring battle system is a little different and difficult to pick up at first but you will be a pro in no time. This isn't just one of the best Paper Mario games, it is also one of the best Mario games, period!

The visuals and music in the game are top notch. The dialogue is quirky, cheesy, and sarcastic in all the best ways. The battle mechanics are different from previous paper Mario games but it is explained in great detail. The battles start off very simple and slowly get more intricate the further you progress in the game. Overall very happy with this game and recommend to anyone who likes a good Mario story and solving puzzles.

The last Paper Mario game I played was The Thousand-Year door, which was one of my favorites. As you might know already, the battle system is different which took a few battles to get used to, but once I got the hang of it I had no problems at all. I loved the story and the humor was still there from TTYD. I do miss the old battle system but it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be.

Great story, gamplay and also difficulty. Most mario games are easy, but this one was good all the way around. Highly recommend it

This is such a fun game. The concept is very simple but the visuals are hilarious. This is such a creative game. Although not as good as the flagship Mario games, it's a fun mis-adventure of sorts.
The turned based battle grind can be a littlw daunting but easily avoidable in many instances.
I highly recommend if youre a Mario fan.
Also, buying this way makes it easy to pay cash and avoid adding your credit/debit card to another online retailer.

I bought this game to play with my kids. They love the story and helping me spot origami toads in the game. I think the art style in this game is really great. Would definitely recommend. It’s not necessarily a Mario RPG so much as a fantastic Mario adventure game.
