Being a fan of the Paper Mario series for many years but never having access to too many Gamecube games, I only ever got to hear others talk about this game. They said it's a highlight of the series and now, being able to play it myself, I have to say I agree.

It’s Mario in a different format, which is usually pretty fun to try. I never got to play the GameCube version so I was looking forward to this one.

A Timeless Classic, Even Better on Switch

Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door was one of my favorite games on the GameCube, and this remake completely does it justice. The updated visuals are gorgeous—colorful, crisp, and full of charm—while still keeping the original paper aesthetic intact. The orchestrated soundtrack adds so much depth to the atmosphere and really enhances the nostalgia. Gameplay-wise, it’s just as fun as I remember. The turn-based combat with timed button presses makes battles more engaging than most RPGs, and the partner system adds variety and strategy. The writing is still laugh-out-loud funny, with quirky characters and witty dialogue that make the story unforgettable. I also appreciate the quality-of-life improvements, like streamlined menus and smoother performance. It makes the experience feel modern without losing its original heart. If you’re a fan of RPGs or just want a charming, story-driven adventure, this is a must-play. For returning fans, it’s the best way to revisit a classic; for newcomers, it’s the perfect introduction.

**Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door** on the Nintendo Switch is a highly anticipated and mostly successful remake of the GameCube classic. The remaster has generated a lot of excitement, and for good reason — it preserves the magic of the original while improving on key aspects. ### Visuals and Audio The game’s visuals have received a major upgrade, with the bright, colorful art style looking even more vibrant on the Switch. The 2D/3D hybrid world remains charming, and areas like Hooktail Castle and Rogueport benefit from enhanced textures and lighting. The soundtrack is another highlight, offering a remixed version of the original tunes, though you can also switch back to the GameCube-era music for that nostalgic feel. ### Gameplay and Combat The core turn-based combat remains mostly unchanged, with the signature "action commands" that require precise button presses to maximize damage. This system keeps battles engaging, with an emphasis on timing and strategy. The addition of a partner wheel makes switching between your companions easier and faster, which improves the flow of battles. While the combat is solid, some players may find that the earlier chapters feel repetitive, with battles that drag on a bit. The exploration aspect has been improved with a more streamlined fast-travel system and less backtracking, though some may still find the puzzle-solving and platforming segments challenging. ### Story and Characters The story is one of the standout features of *The Thousand-Year Door*, with its witty writing and memorable characters. Mario is joined by a colorful cast of partners, each with their own unique abilities and personalities. The game’s humor is timeless, and the dialogue remains charming and clever throughout. The relationship between Mario, Princess Peach, and even Bowser adds layers to the narrative, giving it more depth than you'd expect from a typical Mario adventure. One notable change in the Switch version is a more faithful localization to the original Japanese script, which addresses some minor discrepancies from the GameCube version, especially in how characters like Vivian are portrayed. ### Final Verdict *Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door* on Switch is a fantastic remaster that successfully blends nostalgia with modern improvements. The game still stands as one of the best RPGs on the GameCube, and its remake on the Switch makes it accessible to a whole new generation of players. While some might find the early chapters a bit repetitive or the puzzles frustrating, the overall experience is enjoyable, with a perfect mix of humor, strategy, and heart. It's an excellent addition to any RPG fan's library.

This game was my childhood, originally on the GameCube. It is my absolute favorite Paper Mario game of all time, from mechanics to storytelling. I knew going into it that not much would be changed and I was simply excited to play it once again. But boy was I wrong. To simple backtracking and quality of life changes to the GORGEOUS soundtrack and visuals. There is a complete new breath of life in this game and it is easily the best looking and playing Paper Mario game of all time, despite the 30 fps frame cap. Sure it would feel smoother at 60, but a game like this simply does not need to be that high and I didn't even notice the difference once throughout my entire playthrough. This game is a must buy for all RPG enjoyers, you will not be disappointed.

This is my favorite game of all time. To see it beautifully remade like this was not only a treat, but also an affirmation as to why so many loved this game in the first place. The story is amazing, the visual upgrade is wonderful, and the soundtrack has both the original and the remixes for the modern audience. The only knocks I can give it is that the frame rate is locked to 30FPS as opposed to the original's 60FPS. That is still a minor complaint as the frame rate is stable and does not hamper the game experience. Please buy this game if you like Mario or RPGs at all!

The fan-favorite game from the entire Paper Mario series makes a triumphant return with a beautiful HD remake. It has been a joy to revisit this game and experience the pinnacle of the series again. Hopefully this remake means that future Paper Mario games will return to the classic formula and bring back all of the things that fans have been missing—unique character and partner designs, traditional turn-based combat system, and a stronger emphasis on story. This remake is truly a must-play for Paper Mario fans new and old!

I can totally see why everyone was complaining about modern paper Mario now, I don't think I can ever go back. Every single character is unique from one another, the world is bright and colorful, the story is SO engaging and slightly dark at times. If you have heard all the talk about how TTYD was one of Nintendo's best games and wondering if it was true id say absolutely and its worth a shot! HOWEVER You must keep in mon that this is NOTHING like the origami king that is also on switch. That game is more so a puzzle platformer while TTYD is strictly an RPG. if your not a RPG fan then you might not enjoy this title as much as TOK. In saying that however, unlike other RPGs you don't just press a button and watch an animation. Each attack serves at there own mini quick time event. Its not the MOST engaging thing in the world but its better than Pokémon ill give it that. Which game should YOU get? This is a hard decision because although not EVERYONE likes RPGs TOK has puzzles as its main battle gimmick which some might argue is MORE boring. however TOK has measure's in place to make sure the player never stays stuck on a puzzle for to long. If you don't feel your child has the attention span for RPGs then I say TTYD, however if that can (or if they are older) I do suggest TTYD DO NOT buy TTYD first than TOK If you wanna get them both. TOK is less satisfying experience (compared to TTYD that is anyway.)

If you haven't played the original when it came out on GameCube then you need to experience this game. And if you’re like me and already played the original then this is a worthy way to replay an old favorite in glorious HD + portable wherever you go!

I don't play a lot on the Switch, but this game alone justifes me having one. Paper Mario The Thousand Year Door (TTYD) is a wonderful game with a big story, tons of unique locations, extremely charismatic characters and unique take on turn based combat. I personally don't really care for turn based games, but Paper Mario TTYD has a special sauce to it that makes it really fun. From the semi open world exploration, to the unique abilities, this game encourages exploration as well experimentation. Whether you're a younger player looking for a different Mario game, or a more experienced player just looking for something different. This faithful remaster of a GameCube classic is a no brainer purchase for any Switch owner.

Played the original to death back on the GameCube so seeing this fully remade with HD graphics and an updated art style was literally a childhood dream of mine come true. It’s a near perfect remake with its main issue being quite slow text speed if you’re a fast reader but the gameplay more than makes up for it. I cannot recommend it enough!

This game has taken what was already an amazing, well thought out, fun and enjoyable experience and enhanced on it. The music has a touch of nostalgia to it, the battles flow a lot slower but in the best possible way, and theres some overall quality of life changes that make traversing the worlds and finding items so much more fun. This is absolutely worth $60 no questions asked.

This game has held up so well in its gameplay and writing. The best story of any Mario RPG, characters and badges offer plenty of options for customizing your way of battling, and the new graphics really elevate the art. Small tweaks to the game here and there show that the team that worked on this remake really cared. I surprisingly could not feel a difference in combat between the remake's 30 fps and the original's 60 fps, so they definitely did their work to make sure combat still felt the same (though they definitely made guarding easier).
