I really wanted to like my red Parrot BeeBop. I have a Phantom 2 Vision, a great flyer in open spaces where GPS is available. But I wanted a drone that, along with GPS, had sound and optical sensors underneath so I could fly inside or in tight spaces outside. I bought my Phantom 2 before the Phantom 3 was announced. I wish I had known, I would waited a few months for the Phantom 3.
But, the Parrot BeeBop sounded like the indoor drone I was looking for, small size, GPS, sound and optical sensors for indoor flight, great optical stabilization.
The "Good" - video stabilization is awesome, the video is smooth and looks like it came from a quad with a gimbal. Really amazing! The quad is packaged well, and you could re-use the box for storing and transporting the BeeBop. The drone seems to be reasonably tough, after several minor crashes and falling to the ground from 6', it had no damage, save for scuff marks on the inside of a prop guard. The prop guards fall off almost every time the BeeBop goes down or hits something, but I suppose it's a good way to dissipate energy. They snap back on quickly and easily, no harm, no foul. After 20 flights, varying from a few seconds to a full 10 minutes or so, and most ending in some form of a crash, the props were in great shape. The BeeBop stops the motors immediately upon impact, and it is effective to save the props from damage.
The "Just OK" - Battery installation works, but seems a little hokey in that you have to pull the connector out of the hull using the attached string, snap the connector onto the battery, then the connector is pushed back into the hull as you push the battery into position. The battery is secured with two Velcro strips. Again, it comes off as a little hokey, but it does work. Maybe they did it like that for crash durability? It certainly doesn't win design points. Offloading video was rather slow, much slower and more clumsy to connect the BeeBop via USB to the computer. Transferring files seemed to take twice as long as simply reading from an microSD chip. I prefer other strategies where you simply remove the microSD to copy files to a PC. I never was able to see video or picture files in the "Album" portion of the BeeBop, so I don't know how it works, or if it works.
Another "Just OK" feature is battery life. The 10 minutes or so you get with each of the two 1100mah batteries is just barely adequate to do any real flying. The reason I don't rate this as bad is that, if I had kept this quad longer, I would have purchased additional batteries, and I would have purchased the larger batteries. 15 - 20 minutes should be achievable with larger batteries and would be enough for a useful and satisfying flight, in my opinion.
The "Bad" - Best Buy does not offer the Sky Controller option, so I was forced to use a smart device to control the BeeBop. I tried both my Android phone and an iPad 2, and the flight experience was equally miserable, and equally disappointing. Even with GPS, optical and sound sensors, this bird would drift, and drift, and keep drifting. It would almost never hold a hover for more than a few seconds before it would start drifting off, about 1 meter every 2 or 3 seconds, and another meter, and another meter.... it would not drift and come back like the Phantom 2 does, staying within in its "box". The BeeBop would just drift, and drift, and drift away like a helium balloon if I let it. That, combined with the latency of the virtual controls made it very difficult to control anywhere other than wide open places. Flying aggressively in big, wide open spaces was easiest. Except that controlling the yaw is difficult because of the virtual control pad. The virtual controls, with no tactile feedback combined with 1/2 second to 1 1/2 second latency made it difficult to know if you successfully executed a command, did you give enough command, or did you give too little or too much command?
Maybe the BeeBop flying experience is better with the Sky Controller? But, for $900, I won't know. I would rather spend a couple hundred extra and get the Phantom 3 with the downward facing sensors, no question.
Conclusion: The BeeBop sounds like a neat idea, looks OK on paper. they really need to sell the BeeBop with the Sky controller and sell the whole shebang for $600, and I think they would have a winner. Beyond that, I can't recommend it, especially if you are trying to control the BeeBop with a smart device.
I returned my BeeBop after a couple of days trying to fly inside and out. The latency and lack of precision of control with the virtual control setup was just too irritating. It was not fun, definitely not $500 fun.

I got this on "massive" sale on Black Friday weekend. The wing was slightly damaged when we opened it, but it was easy to fix. This is a fun drone to use for non-experienced drone flyers.

Amazing Adult Toy!!

First the bad... I think that they released this before they were totally ready and there are not instructions in the box other than how to put the battery in and how to turn it on. And the battery instructions are not adequate. But there are some videos on Youtube and on their forum a member has translated a French Guide that is good.... Apart from that this drone is amazing. Anyone can fly it right from the start. Its really stable. Once you take off it will hover at 1 meter. You can literally walk away from the controls on your smart device and go to the hovering drone and push it around and it will return to where it was hovering. Its good in winds up to 30mph although I would not want to fly in those conditions. I have had it
in winds up to 10mph and it was totally in control. I have flown it up to about 130' and speeding along at 30mph. Takes HD video or snapshots the whole time. I wish you would get more than 11-12 min of flight time but its easy to land and change batteries. They provide 2. I suspect that a higher capacity battery will be available early next year. I like it enought that I will be buying the skycontroller when it is available where I can get up to 2km!!! in range.

Fun Drone But Not Reliable...

One must read all the instructions from the Parrot Web Site and also the video tutorials as this does not come with anything in terms of use information, just how to place the battery and thats about it. Now for flying, I purchased with the SkyController and its much easier to control than just using the iPad or iPhone. But a few warnings, the Bebop updates easily but the SkyController does not. I called Parrot Support and they told me very few USB Memories are supported by the SkyController. I still have not found one yet that allows me to update the firmware. I have used HP, LaCie, Memorex, etc. Also, I had a crashed my Bebop from 50+ feet and I called Parrot to get a way to send in for service and they never responded. Just an email stating them will contact me in 48 hours, that was like a week ago.
Its also important to note I have never been able to get the flying distances that they claim, even with the SkyController my WiFi Meter shows just one light after approximately 100ft-150ft. Thanks much shorter than the claimed 2KM Range that is on their web site and on the box.
So in Summary:
Pros: Great Image Quality in Sun Light, light, highly mobile
Cons: Price, Customer Support/Service, no spares, limited range
For a $800 toy I expected better support. Oh by the way, the Bebop right now ONLY HAS SPARE PARTS IN FRANCE. Nothing in the USA.

The Bebop Drone responds well to its controls and seems to be very well made. The battery life is about what is advertised. Good drone for the price.
