Great for a first try
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Limited by the media available for it. Haven't seen a film at highest resolution yet, so can't really say it will blow you out of your shoes. DVD's are a waste of electricity. Blu-rays are what you expect. One problem is with the audio sync, there is an adjustment for that.

bad video quality
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Bought this to play 4k UDH Bluray discs on my LG OLED 4K TV. Already have an Xbox One S (which also has a bluray player), but I hate having to use multiple remotes, and I wanted a UHD-Player that was HDMI-CEC compatible. UHD video quality was MUCH better on my Xbox One S. In fact, the video quality was so poor on the Philips, that the standard Blurays on my PS4 Pro looked almost as good as the UHD Blurays on this Philips. I bought the Deadpool UHD Bluray, and it came with the UHD disc and the standard Bluray disc. This made it easy to tell that the PS4 standard bluray was 95% as good as the UHD play back on the Philips UHD player. If you really need UHD, just do the Xbox One S or the Samsung K8500. The Philips is not worth it.

DISAPPOINTED!!!
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. After buying a 50" LG 4K HDR TV, I decided to upgrade to a 4K Blu-ray player. Even though some of the reviews for this Philips were not great, I decided to give it a shot. I'll start with 4K disc playback. I tried X-Men: Apocalypse and Star Trek Beyond, and both had an issue where the image would "stutter" sporadically throughout the movie. Regular Blu-ray playback was fine, but slow compared to the Sony BDP-S6500 I currently own, so I decided to return the Philips. Afterward, I purchased the Samsung UBD-K8500 4K player from another retailer. 4K disc playback was much better than the Philips, but I preferred the picture quality and features of my Sony for regular Blu-rays, so I decided to return the Samsung too. Also, I thought the HDR on both players over-saturated the colors. Regular Blu-ray looks more natural to me. So, I decided to upgrade my receiver to one with 4K pass-through, and stick with my Sony 4K upscaling Blu-ray player, which produces an image that's almost indistinguishable from real 4K, minus the HDR. I won't consider buying a 4K player again until they work out the kinks.

Very good player, but with a few quirks
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.Overall, as a UHD and Blu-ray player, I think this is a better choice than the Samsung model I tried, but it does have a few quirks of its own. One, it shuts off automatically after a short period of inactivity. As far as I can tell, this timer function cannot be defeated, and it makes integration and control with a Harmony universal remote difficult. Two, disc auto-start at power on cannot be disabled. Three, there are only two built-in apps at the moment-- Netflix and YouTube; I'd like to see more choices but there's no guarantee that more are coming. Four, when switching to the Netflix app, half the time I get a screen full of snow that can only be remedied by switching my AV receiver to another input, then back to the Philips' input. This only happens half the time regardless of the HDMI cable used, and regardless of whether the player is connected to the TV directly or running through my Pioneer AV receiver. And finally, less than stellar compatibility with playable file formats from a USB drive. My Oppo player had no issues there, and neither did the Samsung UHD unit. Overall, if you're looking strictly for a no-frills stop-gap disc spinner with little other utility, then this is the player for you. The price is fair for the functionality. Recommended to those who can live with the aforementioned shortcomings.

A Ordinary Player

Not worth the price
||Posted . Owned for more than 2 years when reviewed. This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. When it works, it is great, but this was my second one of these and they both had the same issue where the tray stopped working and there was nothing that could be done about it. Don't waste your money.

Total waste of time and money
||Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review.I purchased this item and after spending 6 hours trying to get it to recognize my 4K television I returned it to the store. In the process of installing this product I used 4 different HDMI cables, including the one supplied by Phillips, I updated the software for the player, TV and 4K capable surround sound amplifier (the last two were up to date) and directly input the feed from the player to the TV only to continue to have the unit broadcast the 4K video at 1080p. I ended up buying the Samsung later when the price dropped and is now selling at $199.99.

Philips hits a home run!
Posted .This reviewer received promo considerations or sweepstakes entry for writing a review. This player is amazing. Better video quality than my older Oppo 103 player. It upscales my blurays to 4k much better and clearer than the Oppo. Also plays 4k discs beautifully. Tray loads up fast without any noise (unlike the Samsung 4k player where the tray is so cheap and makes too much noise). The remote is very nice with big buttons (like the Oppo) and I like that Netflix and YouTube are separate buttons so you don't have to navigate through menus to get to them. Compared to the little remote that Samsung gives this is much better. I had no hdcp 2.2 or hdmi handshake issues where as the Samsung would give me blinking red lights and no picture even though I'm using a latest marantz 7702mk2 pre pro and a JVC RS500 projector which are both hdcp 2.2 and hdmi 2.0 compatible. I returned the Samsung and this Philips just worked out of the box. I just had to update the firmware on it. It comes with Creed 4k and a high speed hdmi cable which is awesome. Love this player. Best bang for the buck. Why would I spend 700 on a Panasonic or 550 for the new Oppo 4k player (the deal breaker for the Oppo 4k player is that it doesn't come with Netflix or ability to play media files or YouTube). Philips just killed it with this player. Everything I need without breaking the bank.
