I wanted to add some Phillips hue lights to my hallway so I could dim the lights at night. I then though about the motion sensor to allow the lights to be off but come on dimmed during the night. The biggest reason for this was to prevent wasted electricity keeping a light on in the hallway in case one if my children woke up and needed to come into the bedroom for whatever reason. This is really the perfect set up due to the fact that you can adjust the daylight sensitivity and the motion sensitivity. There's no wires needed and the mounting is super simple. Eventually I would like to get another for the upstairs bathroom as well in case the kids need to use the bathroom in the middle of the night.

Pro - easy to set up Can activate any or all lights Battery operated with strong battery for mounting Cons - Cannot deactivate this device during daylight hours. If you have it to turn on a light for 5 minutes - it will do that all times of the day

Got the sensor to work with our Phillips hue lights that we had set up for the basement stairs and basement. When we’re carrying laundry downstairs our hands are full, but we don’t need to use our elbows or a wrist to turn the series of lights on required to get to the basement laundry room. The sensor works perfectly every time. We have it set up on a timer for five minutes, so we don’t need to think about telling our echo dot to turn off the lights; they simply go off a minute or so after we get back upstairs. I loved how it works so much, I bought two more for use in other locations in the house

Bought this on a whim because I have a dimly lit staircase from the garage to the house. Plenty of family members complained they might topple down the steps. Saw this on sale and gave it a shot. Love this thing! It is very customizable from sensitivity of motion to length of time the light stays on. Anytime there is motion near the stairwell it activates and stays lit for 5 minutes before shutting itself down. Of course you need it paired with a hue bulb but the white are fairly inexpensive. No more dimly lit staircase. I'm loving my handy work with this sensor!

I like the motion detector, but am not super happy with the software. Pros: works on included batteries, probably gets exceptional battery life Detects motion okay, daylight too Cons: Software is limited, only allows for a day and night mode. For real world use I would like a schedule with more slots and even times when it is disabled. Also shuts lights off during 'do nothing times'. Overall, works pretty good, sometimes I have to shut it off when I want to enjoy some other lighting apps. Great when you want basic lights.

set mine up above my front door so my lights will turn on when i get home. its so nice to have the lights turn on automatically especially if i come home at night with my hands full of groceries or something. You can set a time frame of when you want it to detect motion during the day and a time frame for afternoon. you can select which lights you would like to turn on and select a scene for those lights. when the lights are on you can also configure how long you want the lights to stay on when there is no motion detected. 2 minutes, 3, 5, 7, 10, 15, 20, 30, 45 and 60

It took me a few tries to get this configured how I want it (using different settings for daytime and nighttime), but once I got used to the available options and created scenes to use as presets for the different times of day, it has been working great. After 11pm I have it set to use a dim scene to act as a hallway nightlight, but the rest of the time it is full brightness. But there is also a slider to adjust so it won't turn on if there is already enough natural light during the daytime. My only complaint is the price - although all Hue products have a premium price - and for motion sensors when this is on sale it is comparable in price to much lower quality non-Hue motion sensors.

I am using this sensor for a split-landing stairwell that gets quite dark at night. I love that paired with the hue labs, I can manage whether the lights are a cool and bright tone for the mornings, or a softer warm tone (or nightlight) for the wee hours of the night. I used one sensor at the split and it is powerful enough to sense whether there's movement going up or down the stairs. My house is getting so awesome with Hue automation!

I love this little device... installs easily into the Hue app and now when I walk in my room the light just comes on. There are options to configure so that of a night the light isn't as bright, which is awesome. You can adjust how long it stays on after it detects motion. Only downside is when it fails to connect to the bridge, which has only happened once to me thankfully. Works really well in laundry rooms and bathrooms.

It seemed that someone was always leaving the light turned on in the back hallway of our home even though there's a switch at either end. Well, I solved that by installing one of these and a couple of Philips Hue White Ambiance R30 lights in my recessed ceiling light fixtures. Now, when someone steps into the hallway and before they can hit the switch, the light comes on... and one minute after they leave, it turns off. You can set the length of time the light stays on; it just happens that one minute is sufficient for my home. The light begins to dim first, before it shuts off completely, so you're not plunged into darkness instantly... and stays on as long as it detects motion. I have other areas of my home that this would be really useful for, so will probably be buying more before too long. To break the habit of reaching for the switch (light switch needs to be left in the 'on' position) I got some switch covers that just screw on (using the switch plate screws) to cover the switch and installed those. Worked like a charm.

Definitely works as it should. I wish the HUE settings would be more extensive to allow more scenarios, but it works as advertised. Motion is detected instantly when it's supposed to and have not had any false positives or delays when actual motion should be detected. All detected motion has be true, quick, and accurate. I highly recommend this for anybody looking for an easy motion sensing solution for their lights.

Love the "put anywhere" nature of the product. Response time and sensitivity are just right and I like how you can customize the behavior (shut off after X minutes if no motion, etc). Even so $40 is probably a bit steep for what this is. If you can get it on sale though, I would definitely recommend the product.

Best motion sensor for Hue lights

I tried using SmartThings to trigger a hue Lightstrip in my stairway, but I found it difficult to live with due to 2.4GHz interference and being unable to change the zigbee channel on the SmartThings hub. Overall experience was very laggy and unpredictable triggering of the light. Once I switched to his sensor, I was very pleasantly surprised by the increased range and sensitivity and especially the lower latency. Hue does not expose the sensor API to outside developers, but there are a couple of options for programming them nonetheless: iConnectHue and labs.meethue.com. Also, I seem to be receiving frequent updates from Hue, so hopefully the software control will continue to evolve.

Phillips Hue has created a very nice ecosystem in which everything works well together. The motion sensor fits in superbly with zero set up time with no problems. You must have a compatible bridge for the sensor to talk to and relay the message to your end point. Use a pin or needle, press the setup button inside the battery door cover, look for yellow blinking light, cheeck to see if its automatically found your bridge and you may begin using the sensor. This will not work with a system containing several differently branded products or without a connected bridge. Since set up with a hue bridge and hue bulb and Hue app. there have been no problems and zero misfires or hang ups. If Phillips Huenis your system you will find this to be a great addition with many practical uses!

This is the BEST part of my smart light kit. I started with the Philips color and white starter kit and have added bulbs in various rooms and this is by far the best part of the system! Our kitchen and dining room light used to stay on at all times as it was the central part of the house. If the kids or myself or husband got up in the night, we didn't have to fumble for a light switch. Obviously this is not a very energy saving technique. Problem is now solved with the motion detector! We positioned it where it could detect motion form either entrance (a good distance! Probably 30 ft?) and the lights turn on as you walk in! It's perfect for dealing with my toddler at night and getting milk from the fridge. After five minutes it then dims the lights first then totally shuts them off. It is AMAZING! Can't live without this now.

The Philips Hue Motion Sensor has been a great addition to our Smart Home setup. We have sensors in both our basement and our garage, and the lights go in when we drive into our garage, walk into our garage, or walk into our basement. They are excellent at detecting motion, and also have a built in temperature sensor which is great added feature.
