Customers value the Hue Play Starter Kit's brightness, ease of use, and ability to create ambiance. Many appreciate the straightforward setup and compatibility with other Hue products, although some find the app could be improved. A common concern is the relatively high price point. While some users mention the size of the lights, the overall feedback highlights the positive impact on lighting and entertainment experiences.

These lights are great. I used the option where you stick them to the back of the TV with 3M stickies that they give you in the package. I have not had any issues with them so far. My only complaint with this product is how big the power block is which takes up a lot of outlet space by the tv. Other than that the lights are very vibrant and the app is extremely simple to set up and use.

These lights look amazing, particularly when paired with 4K viewing. To get the best out of the lights I set them to “Gaming” and “Moderate” while playing games and watching movies.

Great set of lights and also comes with the hub so you have everything you need right out of the box. Pictures include a 3rd playbar and the HDMI sync box.

Absolutely horrible. Constantly puts my lights as “unresponsive” with home kit, everything is updated. Wifi is correct. And if I need to restart the bridge everytime this happens I’m restarting it every day. Don’t buy these they just don’t work.

Great Lights Behind TV

I actually purchased the Hue Play Starter Kit because it was on sale and I needed a light to see when walking through living room when TV was on. I did not expect to enjoy it as an addition to our "In Home Movie" experience.
I opened the box and was really disappointed in the weight of the light. It felt and looked cheap made. I mean really cheap made. I started to just return. However I thought I should at least try it out. This is the reason for the 4 star instead of 5 Star rating.
We use Hue Lights in our home so it was easy to just sync these new entertainment lights to our current Hue Bridge. We just kept the one that came with this set as a back up. We already had the Hue App installed on our iPhones so we just added these lights as the entertainment lights on the APP. Easy to install and easy to use with SIRI.
Out 50 inch TV is on the wall. We attached these lights to the back of the TV itself. The lights had to update and that initial update took a long time. Once the lights updated I began to experiment with the colors. The App works flawlessly with these lights. I found that the pre-set lights are great for watching movies. My favorite is "Savanna Sunset". SIRI just turns on my chosen settings with no lag time.
I enjoyed the Hue Play Starter Kits o much that I purchased our daughter a set for her Birthday. I love these lights however I do with there was a way to sync them to react with the movies without purchasing the BOX. The lights were so expensive that I just cannot see paying another $200. for a box to sync them with the movies.
Overall I do enjoy these lights that add dimension and unexpected highlight to our entertainment area. I would give them a 5 star If they were made studier and synced to our TV when viewing movies.

First and foremost, this review is a warning: Once you start down this rabbit hole, expect it to just keep going and going...and going. This is actually my second Hue Play Starter Kit. I found out that it was cheaper to buy this kit on sale than to buy another two Play lights for my office. It turned out that I needed another Hue Bridge to sync both my computer and my new HDMI TV Sync box at the same time. If you're following along, you're starting to get the idea on my growing collection of Hue products!
The lights are extremely high quality LEDs and the colors are vibrant and beautiful. Best of all, everything is really easy to use. The App is well done and stable and it allows you to control all aspects of your new lighting collection. There's also integration for Siri and Alexa which allows you to walk into your room and say, "hey Siri, illuminate," and watch the lights come on. Not that I'd know why that works or anything...

Great concept, not what we're all hoping for

The concept is amazing, and the sync execution from technical standpoint is impressive. HOWEVER, as most have mentioned, this product (currently) only shines with a $200+ hdmi box or hdmi from your computer to TV via Hue Sync. It's got great color and timing/sync, and really adds to a viewing experience when positioned correctly.
Aaaand that's all great...assuming you have a home theater with UHD/Blu-ray player or if you stream/game from your computer. That said, it totally leaves those with smart TVs and Rokus/Google plays (unless you have the hdmi box) with, simply, an expensive remote controlled mood light.
Ideally, Hue starts integrating with smart TV/streaming companies to allow the hue play system to work on a TV/system without expensive hardware or playing from a computer.
I'm fortunate enough to be using this system with a home theater ran from a computer, so it works flawlessly, but I can totally see how smart TV buyers can be left leaving and wanting.
Do your research and find if this works with your current setup. If it does, it's great, if it doesn't, you'll be looking to return, use as ambiance, or moving it to another party of your house for use as a lamp.
Happy viewing!.........or...lamping?

For Starters I picked these up highly discount and sold the bridge to a friend since i already had one (thank you slickdeals)
These lights are awesome. The software to run them on my computer is pretty lightweight. What ive noticed is it depends on the game. But there is about a 5-10 FPS drop when using the Hue Sync. The sync works amazing.
My only slight complaint is with the app and not the hardware. The app for setting up an entertainment room is not intuitive at all. Changing where you say the lights are changes where the color is pulled from. But it all seems arbitrary.
Hardware is amazing.

These smart lights work very well. There are so many color choices to choose from. Having these lights synched up with the Philips hue synch box is a game changer, literally! Movies and gaming have been an experience worth the price. I would recommend this smart lighting setup for anyone who feels like they want more from their current entertainment/media setup but don’t know what it is yet. Also, the $50 gift card promo on top of this deal is a “smart” choice must buy.

These lights are beautiful surrounding my monitor, synced with games and media using Razer Synapse. I liked the first two so much that I bought four more. I'm excitedly waiting on them to arrive. The colors are bright, vivid and accurate at least to my eye. Setup is easy and nearly automatic. I had to enter the serial number in order for the hub to find one of the lights. These lights offer incredible immersion for gaming. They make me supremely happy.

Installed this as part of existimg Philips Hue setup and it is a hit with the friends and family. Only real issue was I had trouble initially getting my existing bridge to detect the play bars and I couldn't figure out where the serial numbers were. Would discover they are both on stickers attached too the cords (if you don't remove those) as well as the instructions manuals pasted on as stickers). Sold lighting and great add to the viewing experience.

Philips Hue products are easy to set up and use, and they offer a great amount of customizability. These are the same way. Plug in, open the app, and play with the settings - all the different themes, brightness, fades, timers... Sure, the idea behind Hue Play is to sync with movies or games, but you're not in any way restricted with how you can use them. The kit even comes with the necessary parts to mount the lights in different ways. Customizability and versatility are what these lights are all about, so that you can create the atmosphere you want.
The Hue Play light bars are also capable of giving off rather bright light (if you'd like to set them up that way), and that's why I'm using them in my home office. They work very well lighting shelves and behind my monitor. They even make great night lights - the fade on and fade off settings and all the possible combinations of colors are pretty nice.
If it matters, they can be a little warm to the touch after they've been on for a long time, but that's nothing to be concerned about. It doesn't hurt anything at all, and they operate very nicely. They're a quality product.
"Those are cool!" is what you'll be thinking once you get things set up. It's what I thought, and it's what other people have said.
I have no hesitation recommending these to anyone looking for smart lighting.
