Hue Switch - Buy if necessary...

Bought this recently and it does the job of turning on/off the lights while still allowing Home Assistant to do it's thing. Pros: It works. It's easy to pair with the Hue App. Everything there is intuitive. Cons: The price. It's pretty expensive for the functionality it brings to the table, but I'll also say that all my hue products have worked flawlessly, so perhaps the stability is built into the cost. The other con is the obvious one. This is installed in your junction box and it's battery powered. No clue how long the battery will actually last, but if I die/move before that happens, I guarantee someone is going to call an electrician to figure out why their lights won't work. If I'm still around, I'm going to have to remember what size battery this takes, turn off the power at my breaker box, unscrew the face plate, unscrew the lightswitch to get to the hue module and replace the battery. This will likely be a pain. On my other hue lights in my house I use the Aurora dial, which is also pretty expensive but works well. I just couldn't use that on this type of switch.

Works well, though there's a more significant delay than I'd like. It takes 1-3 seconds from flipping the switch for the lights to change. Most cases don't need this module as a smart switch makes more sense, but if it's important for you to control smart bulbs and retain the look/ease of use of a normal switch, this is a good solution.

Pricy for the purpose but helped

A little pricy, but it solved a lot of problems on my parent's smart home. I installed smart lights, so that they could get help in the event of an emergency between them (one is hearing impaired so a way to change the lights to alert one another) however they would turn off the light switch and thus destroy the purpose of the smart lights. This solved it. A little pricy, took a bit to install but worked to solve the problem

    Perfectly balanced product!

This little gadget strikes a perfect balance between old-school light switches and 'smart' appliances. Sitting in between the wiring for your house mains & the light switch, it allows any standard switch to be a smart switch by stopping power from being cut to the lights by light switch operation. The switch still behaves like a standard light switch, but since the bulbs are still powered, you can use voice and app commands to turn lights on & off, even with the switch "off". The device is also tiny - it shouldn't be any issue tucking it into any standard box. There is a battery that will eventually need replacing in it, but those small button batteries usually last a long time. I imagine it'll be a few years before it'll be a worry. Be warned though - it'll only work properly with Hue bulbs.

Perfect accessory for Philips bulb control

Exactly what I was looking for! Have 1 of these in each of my kids rooms where the light switch is attached to a particular outlet but their main room lights (lamps) are attached to different outlets. This allows me to control the Philips light bulb, wherever it is, while allowing power to pass through to the all wall outlets.

Made no sense how to install and the website was not helpful. I'm a tech person and this made the sense. Best Buy employees couldn't explain it either.

These work great! Easy to install with the provided instructions! I love the ability to keep my existing light switches and have them control the hue bulbs. The only thing negative about them is they seem to cost a lot for something that size and simple.

Probably philips hues worst product. I thought by installing this behind an existing light switch would make regular bulbs smart meaning you could turn lights on and off by voice or app. This only works with smart bulbs. Why would I need this if my bulbs are already smart bulbs?

Nice idea, but things to consider

You put these inside the switch box for your wall switch ( have to turn off circuit breaker, attach wires together with provided wire nut, etc… can you do that or need electrician?) You detach the existing wires from your existing wall switch, and connect them together. That leaves that circuit always powered on. You then attach this device to your existing wall switch. Your wall switch now will control this device… not the flow of electricity to your fixtures, outlet or whatever it did before. Consider: 1) That circuit is now always powered. If you get into a situation where you need to power- cycle (off-on) that circuit ,for example , if bulbs become unresponsive, or whatever you are troubleshooting , you have to shut off power at the circuit breaker at the panel. Not terrible I guess… But just things to keep in mind. 2) Even though there’s electricity in that box, this Hue unit is battery powered. The battery last I think it up to three years… At that time you’ll have to shut off the circuit breaker and open the box and change it or its battery. So you will have work down the road.

    Seems dangerous

I was considering getting this until I found out that even when the switch is off the fixture has power. This seems like a recall waiting to happen. Be sure to tell anyone working on your light that power is on. Someone will get hurt with this.
