Finally, the Perfect Way to Wake Up!

I’ve searched endlessly for the right wakeup alarm product or App and finally found it in the Philips SmartSleep Light Therapy Lamp. This lamp, coupled with the free App, is more than just a new way to wake up. Here are just a few of the reasons why: PROS: - MAJOR PRO! Wake up without the adrenaline rush! Being jolted out of sleep by an alarm can’t be healthy. Even some alarm Apps with more gentle sounds or tones are still too abrupt for me. Instead, this lamp allows me to wake up gently to a gradual, simulated sunrise, with or without sound/music, ensuring a better start to my day! - Lots of alarm settings. You can set the color scheme, the light intensity, & the duration of the gradual sunrise, with or without sound. You can also set multiple alarms with individual settings for each. - The Lamp can also be used as a reading lamp with the ability to dim & set the optimum color for pre-sleep. It can also be set to fully lit or bright when needed. - SleepMapper App: The stable App was quick to connect & has some great features. It will display current room conditions like Temp, Humidity, and amount of light & noise while giving you a comparison to the optimal conditions of each. The App can track your sleep & also offer a wind-down breathing exercise. I especially like the Sunset feature & use it each night. This allows you to set a sunset countdown where the light will gradually dim to fully dark. CONS: - MAJOR CON! Why is the display color white? Even at the lowest setting, the white display completely negates the effort to black out the bedroom for optimal sleep. There is an option to turn off the display, but then you lose the ability to see what time it is. If Philips would allow a nighttime red display option, this would solve the problem. - Outer case only available in white. Since the lamp will most likely be displayed prominently on your bedside table or nightstand, Philips should offer the product in other more attractive color options than white. Basic black or brown would be more compatible with the avg. bedroom suite. - The App doesn’t allow the same type of functions as the manual functions on the lamp. For example, setting radio station presets is easier on the lamp vs. the App. - Limited Wakeup sound options: Some of the wakeup sounds are downright odd & even humorous (mooing cow with cowbell?). Increasing the variety of wakeup sounds in the App would be a simple fix that would greatly improve the product. - Speaker: Very tinny sound. FM radio sounds more like AM. It also makes the wakeup options sound weird. A little more base would do the trick. Overall, I’m giving it 4 stars. It’s the most innovative sleep product I’ve seen, & the idea of gently waking up to a ‘natural’ sunrise is groundbreaking! With a few tweaks, Philips can grow this concept into a 5-star product.

    Cool Sleep/Wake Lamp

Summary: The Philips SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light Therapy Lamp does the essentials of helping one fall asleep at night as well as pleasantly wake one up in the morning. The Philips SleepMapper app allows you to control all aspects of the lamp and also gathers sleep metrics should you decide to use those features. I found myself using the app a majority of the time. Goal: Although I have no trouble falling asleep and waking up on time, I wanted to try a device I’ve never used before to get my 4 year old son out of bed every morning. He is a heavy sleeper and trying to wake him up abruptly just makes things miserable for him. Waking Up: I gave it a try first; I set an alarm for 6AM every day using the app. This meant setting a sunrise duration, sun intensity and sound. I set the sunrise duration to 30 minutes, which meant that the sunrise will begin very dim at 5:30AM and begin to build up in intensity. I set the max intensity to what was comfortable to me. I also elected to play birds chirping as the sound and this happens right at 6AM. I was very surprised how pleasing it was to awaken me. For the few days that I used it, I found myself waking up a few minutes before 6AM, yet not feeling the urge to go back to bed! There’s something to be said about waking up to a natural light and not a blaring alarm. Letting the alarm meet 6AM lets the selected sound of birds chirping come through. If you wake before then and touch the device, you’ll never hear any sounds. Oh yes, touching the top of the lamp will deactivate the alarm. Falling Asleep: I found that there are two main ways to fall asleep using the lamp. The first way is the obvious sunset option. You can start the sunset anytime and it will begin the sunset with the chosen time duration. In other words, if I set it to 60 minutes, I’ll get a 60 minute sunset. You can activate sunset on the device itself or use the app. The second way is a setting called RelaxBreathe, where you sync your breathing to either the pulsation of the lamp or the sound modulation of white noise. The idea is to take long, deep breaths as you begin putting yourself to sleep. You can go as low as 4 breaths per minute (wow) or as high as 10. I picked 6 and that seemed to ease me to bed without suffocating myself. You can set this mode to last as long as 15 minutes; I can’t remember when the mode actually stopped because I did fall asleep before then. Other Cool Things: The lamp monitors your room’s conditions such as temperature, humidity and decibel sound levels and makes recommendations to ensure your environment is optimal for sleep. What it recommends to you may not be what you like; I sleep with a sound machine nightly, but the lamp says that the room is too loud for sleeping conditions. Cons: As I mentioned above, I do sleep with a sound machine nightly; the lamp does have a sound machine feature, but can only be activated during the sunset mode. But when the sunset is completely gone, so is the sound!! I can’t keep the sound going indefinitely until sunrise. This is probably the only problem I have with this lamp. Maybe a software update will allow it to play through the night. Summary: See first paragraph.

I appreciate seeking out a better sleep just as much as the next guy...in fact, recently when Bose recalled their SleepBuds I was a bit perturbed, as I have been plauged with poor sleep over the last few years at least. The first time you see this device from Philips, you're not quite sure what you're looking at. Personally, I was a little bit worried based on its design (distrubed? excited? not even sure?), but getting over that hump and actually trying it out I was able to learn a few things that I didn't know before. The design aside, this "lamp" (and I use quotes because it does far more than a standard lamp) has a built-in alarm clock which supports multiple alarms, sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, light, and noise levels, an FM radio, relaxation functions to help you fall asleep, and basic bedtime/sleep-tracking capabilities to give you better insight into your slumber. And, while most of these features are usable without it (thanks to an on-device screen that displays the time and has capacity touch capability to allow you to navigate through the lamp's menus), the Philips SleepMapper mobile app helps you keep tabs on all of your data. The setup was a bit frustrating, as it took me 3 resets of the lamp to get it to stay connected to my phone long enough to download and install the latest firmware update. Once that was done, the connectivity between my phone and the lamp was inconsistent regardless of how close I was to the lamp. The app itself requires an account be set up with Philips, but it annoyed me that my existing Philips account (which manages my Hue lighting) is a strictly separate account, and app, from the SleepMapper's account and app. The app itself is well-designed, and connection issues aside, allows control of all functions. You can set multiple alarms (I had 4 total set for various days of the week), initiate relaxation and bedtime tracking modes, and control the radio and display brightness from the app's home screen. The app also has a screen dedicated to providing data about sleep durations (provided you "report" those things to the app or the lamp) and environmental conditions, but the data is only available for the trailing 7 days at any time—so no monthly monitoring is available there. The alarm functionality offers both audible and visual triggers; a standard audio alarm is available with a variety of sounds (or the FM radio), while the light can "fade on" over a set number of minutes to slowly illuminate your bedroom in the morning; you can control the maximum intensity of the light as well. I found the relaxation modes to be a bit gimmicky at best. The "RelaxBreathe" function uses the lamp's light to guide you through deep breathing exercises, and the "Sunset" function will slowly "fade off" the lamp at night time to take you peacefully into slumber. The bedtime tracking capabilities exist, but are limited when compared to fitness trackers and smart watches that will be far more accurate in capturing sleep times. Regardless, you have to indicate to the lamp (either through the app, or by long-touching the top of the lamp) that you are going to sleep to indicate your sleep start time, and the end time will default to whatever time your alarm goes off (or when you first interact with the lamp). At the end of the day, though, this is a $200 alarm clock with some lighting and sleep-tracking functionality that, if I'm being honest, can be mostly recreated with a pack of Hue light bulbs and the Hue lighting app, along with a fitness tracker and smart phone you may already have. Not to mention, it is a really funny-looking device that if modeled after the Hue Go light would be more appealing.

I’ve woken up to the Phillips Somneo for a few days now and overall I’ve really enjoyed my experience. Here are some thoughts on it: - For me, waking up to this light has been amazing. I feel it’s less disruptive to my sleep cycle. Admittedly, I’m a light sleeper, but I will wake up naturally to the light before I hear an audio alarm. - I like the design of it. It looks very sleek. - This device is feature rich. You can customize alarms, light color, intensity of light, if a sound plays at the end of your sunrise, etc. - My favorite feature is customizing how the “sunrise effect” works. I am a pretty light sleeper, so I shortened the sunrise to last 15 minutes. - The app (Phillips SleepMapper) works well. It’s nice to be able to control all the features from my phone. - The screen on the front of the device is functional and fine, but I do prefer the app. - The device offers a “time in bed” tracker which requires the user to remember to start a timer. I personally haven’t found that super useful because I never remember to do it. - It has the option to use a noise alarm as a backup. The default noise is birds chirping, which is surprisingly super calming to wake up to. - Being able to see the sleeping conditions of my room, such as temperature, humidity, and noise levels, has been super nice. It’s made me try to calibrate my sleep conditions accordingly. Overall, if you are looking for a wake-up light, this is a great choice. It works as intended, has a lot of features, and allows a lot of customization.

The concept behind this product is fantastic, but the execution a little lacking. After unboxing, setting up, and downloading the app, we had problems with the app. It just didn't want to connect. I did a reset on my phone, router, and reinstalled the app. Finally we got it connected. We got everything set up, having placed the clock in my sons room, and tried it out. My son is autistic and uses a CPAP so getting him to fall asleep can be a challenge. We were looking forward to this product to see if it would help him fall asleep faster. This device records the room temp and a variety of ambient factors to determine what adjustments need to be made to ensure an optimum sleep environment. What we really liked was the sunset and sunrise feature. They worked really well for me son. He really likes the clock. The alarm sounds are so pleasing, and my son likes being eased awake instead of jolted by a loud and annoying alarm clock. After a week or so of him getting used to it and making the recommended adjustments, we began to notice that he was falling asleep faster. If it weren't for the connection issues, this would be a 5-star product.

Set the light to turn on 5 minutes before the alarm and it has woken me up in less than 3 minutes every day. It's a very gentle and peaceful way to wake up. The settings are super easy to use for adjusting times, light, and sound. The radio, with optional pre-set stations, is a nice touch as well. As far as the sleep features are concerned, I fall asleep so quickly that I haven't really noticed a difference. The only negative comment would be for sound quality but it's primarily an alarm clock so it's not a big deal.

For years, my wife has said it's hard waking up on these dark winter mornings. She wished we had a light on a timer. My response has always been to just nod and roll my eyes. Last week we got the Philips - SmartSleep Connected Sleep and Wake-Up Light. I installed its app on my cell phone, and setup was intuitive and easy. The light and app communicate over 2.4 GHz WiFi (there is no 5 GHz option on the light). Using the app, you set your wake-up time like an alarm clock. The light is very customizable: hue, intensity, duration of illumination, a variety of built-in sounds, an FM tuner... after a little experimenting, we prefer the light-only alarm. It alone is enough to get us going. As the set alarm approaches, the light slowly begins to illuminate until it reaches our chosen full intensity right on time. I honestly can't believe the difference that little bit of gentle light makes in the morning. It is actually easier shake out the cobwebs and get out of bed. There is also the option to not have it connected to your network. It can be programmed manually and used as a light-up alarm clock, but the app makes it simple and offers easy access to the full range of functions. Speaking of the full range of functions, there’s a USB port to charge your phone and an aux port to connect a music source. Oddly, there is no option to wake up to your own music. The light is equipped with sensors to monitor temperature, humidity, light and noise. I have yet to see the real value of this information. It's kind of cool, but we sleep how we sleep. We won't be turning up the thermostat overnight or unplugging the nightlight just because the app says we don't have ideal sleeping conditions. Overall, we are happy with it and have had no second thoughts. And, as much as I hate to admit it, she was right.

We actually got the product for our youngest child to help her fall asleep and not wake up grumpy for school (hahaha). As far as we can tell it has been working great. The sounds accompanied by the dimming and brightening of the light make it nice. I will say the app does have some issues on the I phone X. However it's fairly easy to fix. It took a few minutes to set up and use and it was well worth it.

Had low hopes for this light since I have tried several bedtime devices and one is not better than the other. Set up for this device is seamless and it syncs with your phone easily over Wifi. The device has a few options, winding you down at bedtime with slow breathing techniques and easing you awake with a soft glow much like sunlight and added sounds to choose, birds, forest, farm etc. The best part is you dont need the phone to work this device as it has settings directly on the touchpad screen. You can even set alarms to wake you up slowly. So far I do seem to feel refreshed from it even though I have not stuck to the routine. Phone app tracks breathing techniques and you can even put on the radio or your own music wired into this device.

This light/alarm clock/radio is amazing. Not only does it wake you up with a multitude of light and sound options, it also has a "sunset" mode to fall asleep to different sunsets and sounds. I prefer the ocean waves. I think I am sleeping better than I have in ages. It has also replaced my bedside lamp making more room on my nightstand. I didn't even realize it has a radio as well. It's easy to set up in the app once you connect to your home wifi.

This is a neat idea, but it is almost too much crammed into one machine, in my opinion. I love the alarm and sunrise/sunset features, along with the quiet calming noises. It really wakes me up out of sleep much more softly, yet effectively, than any other alarm. It has to be hooked to your phone. It has to be connected to your wifi. It is just kind of a lot of hurdles for a glorified alarm clock, you know? I wish it could just connect through Bluetooth and be good. Other than that, a pretty cool product.
