Simple Operation - Nutritious, Delicious, Soups

When I received this Philips – Viva Collection 1.3 Quart Soupmaker in exchange for a fair and comprehensive review, I wasn't too sure of what to expect. However, after three weeks of using this appliance I am never going back to my old-fashioned, time-consuming, scratch-soup recipes again. Philips has re-invented soup making by simplifying the whole process from preparation, adding ingredients / liquids, and using a pre-set program to create a scrumptious soup, blended and cooked to perfection. Philips calls it their SoupPro technology. Using my old soup recipes used to take hours. Now, I can have delicious steaming, soups made with fresh ingredients in under thirty minutes or less letting the Philips Soupmaker do all the work. WooHoo! One of the most unique features is the size of this unit. At first I thought, it only makes approximately 42 ounces of soup. But, that is enough to feed my four Grand Kids each a hot, tummy-filling cup of a soup with some left over for seconds. Or, depending on our appetites, two generous servings of soup for Grandma and me in either 12 or 16 ounce, sized bowls with also some left over for seconds. And, that is the real beauty of this soup maker – it doesn't make large batches. So, we don't have to deal with the same left-over soup the next or following day. We can make a totally different variety of soup every time we use this baby. I simply look at the recipe book included with this soup maker and buy a selection of veggies, required by that recipe. I buy them hand-picked and fresh on each of my shopping trips. Then, I have them on-hand when I am ready to make a variety of soups using my own, fresh-cut ingredients. How handy-dandy and healthy is that? Here is what I really appreciate about this Philips Soupmaker: ** Yummy Soups – For me this is the most significant feature of this Philips Soupmaker. It's why I love it. It was hard to believe this little guy could make such delectable soups in so little time with so little prep. I was totally surprised and impressed. Grandma thought I finally found my niche in life, as a soup-chef. At least the first two soup recipes, cream of broccoli and cream of cauliflower, made Grandma's palette take notice. So much so, she took over the soup making process (no arguments from me). As an experienced home-cook for over 50 years she adds these little touches, like a pinch of this and a sprig of that and makes the recipes spring to life. But, in the end, the Philips Soupmaker does most of the work. ** Saves Precious Time – We can start a soup recipe at 11:30 AM and sit down to enjoy a bowl of that creation by 12 Noon. It is absolutely amazing the number of hours and preparation time this unit saves over conventional soup making all the while delivering an outstanding, luscious soup. When we have folks over, we can serve them a soup-starter along with the fabulous feast of a dinner Grandma has prepared for them. If our prep is done ahead of time we can have the soup fresh and ready to serve in less then 20 minutes. Our Grand Kids love the broccoli soup, which Grandma can easily make in 25 minutes. How cool is that? ** Simple Preparation – The average prep time is usually 15 minutes or less depending on my ingredients. For best results I follow the Instructions and cut the vegetables or solid ingredients into ¾ inch sized cubes. Since most recipes average about 3 to 4 cups of any solid ingredients I can do this pretty quickly, or ahead of time. I cut up uncooked meat, chicken, or fish in ½ inch sized or smaller pieces (they will cook faster). I thaw out my frozen veggies first before I use them in my soup recipes. Instructions call for vegetables to be added first in the jug followed by meat, chicken, or fish, then the liquids. I always stir the ingredients in the jug and make sure the volume is between the MIN / Max line marked inside the jug. Then I am ready for the Philips Soupmaker to do the rest of the work. ** Simple Operation – When I select one of the 38 recipes out of the included Recipe Book, it outlines the prep, ingredients, spices, and cooking instructions for me. It also specifies one of the pre-set cooking icons; Puree Soup, Chunky Soup, Milk-Based Soup, Compote, and Cold Soup / Smoothie. There is also a manual blending button, which allows me to use in conjunction with any of my recipes to change the consistency of my soups, or as an independent blending function. Once I select the cooking icon the Philips does the rest. It blends and cooks according to that particular selected program. You can hear the blender function come on and hear the cooking taking place. It sounds odd at first, but overall it is fairly quiet while operating. When the Philips Soupmaker is finished, it will beep and the program lights will blink. The finished soup will stay warm for up to 40 minutes in the stainless steel jug. ** Well-Designed Unit – The Philips Soupmaker is well-built. Although it looks heavier, it weighs only 5 pounds. The Jug is made of Stainless Steel. It has a satin finish on the outside and polished finish on the inside for easy cleaning. It has two handles, one at the top and side of the jug. They appear to be made of a composite plastic with a finish made for gripping. The top of the jug houses the pre-set controls and icons. On the inside of the top housing is the blender motor, and blender unit with blades, and an overflow sensor. The bottom of the jug unit contains the 1,000 watt heating element housed in composite plastic. What I like is that there are three, non-slip grips on the very bottom of the jug unit to keep it steady and from moving while it operates in the blending function. ** Cleaning – This unit is not designed to go into the dishwasher. I have no problem hand-washing either the jug unit, and, or, the top motor unit. But, I do have to exercise care so water does not get into the motor unit, power connector or the jug power connector. After three weeks of cleaning I found that I can add hot water into the jug up to the MAX fill line. I then add a couple of drops of grease-dissolving dish soap and connect the power back to the unit. I place the blender in manual and let it clean itself for two or more minutes. Easy clean up for the jug and motor housing too. ** Creative Soups – After trying 14 of the 38 recipes Grandma has found her own way to make gastronomical soup creations. Grandma says as long as she stays between the MIN / MAX line inside the jug she can add her own ingredients and spices. She has made outstanding taste sensations like asparagus soup, cream of celery, french onion soup, and lentil soup, which are not found in the included Recipe Book. She also likes to tinker with the existing recipes by adding different combinations of fresh herbs and spices. She often substitutes heavy cream when it calls for a cup of milk, or adds a combination of half and half with milk or cream. Grandma says if the soup is going to be our main meal, the few extra calories in the soup by using cream or half and half is not a diet breaker for us, anyway. I am not going to argue with Grandma. The point is that you can be original with this Philips Soupmaker, and may just be amazed at how tasty your own imaginative cuisine can be. The more we use this appliance and are comfortable with its operation the more we are impressed with its versatility for making, soups, chowders, and desserts too. Wish It Had: ** Separate Lid – For the top of the unit to keep the soup warm when it is finished. It is very clumsy to pour the soup into a bowl with the motor unit and attached blender and blades in the way. ** Longer Cord – The included electrical cord is only 28 inches long. Even a 36 inch cord would be better for most appliance locations, especially since most kitchen counters are 24 inches deep from the back splash where the electrical outlets are. None of the above would prevent me from using this Philips Soupmaker or not recommending it to anyone. We love delicious soups, especially those that can be made with fresh, seasonal vegetables and ingredients. It is nutritious, healthy cooking and is uncomplicated. We love this Philips – Viva Collection 1.3 Quart Soupmaker, and, just bought one from Best Buy for our Grand Daughter, who is also an avid soup-lover. I highly recommend the purchase of this unit for your own family, as a wedding or anniversary gift, or to a special friend. If you are pressed for time to cook this is what you need You won't be disappointed

Phillips electric soup pot is easy to use. The included recipe book gave me ideas on how to use the soup pot and is a great starting point for my own. It includes some basic soups; cleanse recipes, all in multiple languages. Features that stand out: • Special outside coating is easy to clean • Inside appears to be stainless steel – also easily cleaned • “Z” shaped mixing blade is sharp and smoothly cuts or purees ingredients • The special swirls in the pot not only looks cool, it helps mix the soup • Timer shuts unit off after cooking is completed • Quick and easy clean up • There are lots of cooking programs to choice from and the recipe books helps me understand how to use each • - not really a problem, but you will hear the blade swirl through your ingredients during some cycle, like a blender • LOVE the silicon seal on the top and rubber feet underneath; keeps it on the counter!

At first, I was a bit skeptical about buying a soup maker but once I started doing research on it I was intrigued by it. Upon receiving the package, I was very satisfied with how it was packaged. Upon opening the box, I came across a book with a variety of recipes. All the recipes were for soups and sauces. Some of the soup recipes included cold and hot soups. After skimming through the book, the recipe that called my attention was the chicken noodle soup. I decided to go with the chicken noodle soup as my first recipe. I diced carrots, onions, garlic, chicken breast. I added corn kernels, chicken broth and noodles to the Philips soup jar. Keep in mind that every ingredient was raw to include the chicken. After adding all the ingredients, I closed the Jar and set the program as specified by the receipt. About 18 minutes later the soup make made a beep noise and I opened the jar and was greeted by the chicken soup aromas. I was impressed that everything had cooked in such a short time. It was honestly magical like something you would see in a futuristic movie. After waiting for the soup to cool, I indulged in the soup. It was delicious. The only con I would add is that the soup needed additional flavoring but I guess that is something that will take practice. Also, there was some sticking of food on the bottom of the stainless steel jar. Other than that I given this product five stars! I would recommend this product for someone who is on the go and would like to cook something healthy.

    Portable, Easy To Use

I have been looking for a portable soup maker due to always being on the road and came across the Phillips Soupmaker. I was impressed with the ease of use and portability however not a fan of how short that power cable is. Pros: Portability Blade Sharpness Cookbook Included Quietness 41 fl oz (2 - 4 People) Cons: Cleaning Short Power Cable ::Setup / Cleaning:: Setup was very easy, right of the box it is ready (after some simple cleaning) to be used. In the book it is recommended to fill to the MAX line and run a cycle for sensor calibration. Afterwards you can use it at your hearts content. Not many moving parts, the container itself is easy to remove and clean however the motor top and blade is not detachable. I have found the best workaround to clean the blade is to fill to MAX line with soapy hot water and run a cycle. This way it cleans off any particles and easy to wipe down afterwards. I am not a fan of the power cable, it is extremely short and feel they could have increased the length. I have very large counter top along with some hotels that have very far reaching plugs. :: Cooking :: There are 5 cook settings with 1 manual blending. The Pureed Soup Program and the Chunky Soup Program takes about 18 minutes. Milk-based Soup Program takes about 35 minutes and the Compote Program which is heat only takes about 12 minutes. There is a cold soup/smoothing program with is no heat (Blending Only) that is a quick 3 minutes. I find myself enjoying this setting the most for quick meals on the go. The manual blending I have not used however it pretty much allows fully control over the blending aspect if needing to blend a little more out of it. The food items I have made so far came out perfect without issue. The smoothies taste great and the hot soup is hot! No complaints Overall I would recommend this product for anyone who is looking for a good soup maker that is easy to use and portable. Prep work is very simple , just plug it in, chop up the food items into smaller chunks and place inside to make the soup. They include a cookbook which is great and has a large variety to try out. However I recommend to experiment and have fun with making some creations of your own !

Solid, simple to use, and fast. This is a well designed machine. My first attempt at one of their recipes turned out way better than I expected. Far superior in taste to any canned soup. Oh, and did I say simple? Very. Dump the ingredients in select the type of soup from the easy to use button menu press start and walk away for 20 minutes. Done. I've started making my own recipes already after that first Philips recipe. The ONLY thing I am not fond of is size. I wish this came in a size that can handle twice the amount of soup. But still not a deal breaker for me. One batch makes enough for about two very large servings or 3 relatively big servings. One word of caution: Don't over fill it. :) Just fill it to the max-fill line, no more. I will be buying one or more for presents for family.

Pros: Quality -- feels great, looks great, clean, and clutter-free design Simple -- buttons on top to turn on/off and cycle through the various (6) settings Fast -- prep work of your ingredients aside, you're looking at ~25 minutes for most soups, actual range being 15-45 depending on specifics Versatility -- makes smoothies and compote, along with smooth, chunky, hot, or cold soups Cons: Size -- it's a little on the small side making it great for two *maybe* three people eating an entree sized portion of soup, but even three services would be pushing it. This could almost be a 'pro' if you are into making small batches of different things instead of a single massive pot of something that'll sit around for a few days hoping the leftovers get eaten. But, for me, that isn't the case...so it's a con :) Cleaning -- you can't immerse the cylinder in water, so *no* dunking, meaning you have to wipe and rinse, wipe and rinse. Not a complete deal breaker, but something to keep in mind Blade is affixed -- you can't take the blade out, which ties into the previous 'con' a little. If you want to really get in there and clean, while being quite small, the blade in the bottom of the cylinder does not come out, so you need to keep an eye out for it while reaching in there and try to get under it. Again, not a deal breaker. Those small 'cons' add up to losing a star. I definitely still recommend it and think that it's perfect if you enjoy soups on a regular basis. It comes with a nice cookbook that is printed on quality, thick gloss pages; a nice touch for sure.

I love soups, and with my tight schedule It is hard to find time to cook meals, beside the fact that I am not a huge fan of eating out, so this soup maker is kind of a blessing for me. The cookbook that is included is extremely helpful and easy to understand. The Phillips Soup maker is based of 3 parts, the Container, the top motor unit with the blades and the power cable, that is all. It is easy to clean, I don’t mind at all that the parts or blades are not removable. 7 buttoms on the top, Power, 5 cooking selections, and one-touch manual blender buttom. Practically you don’t need to do anything with this unit, just pour all the ingredients you need in the container, put the top unit motor to close the container, it connects the heating unit that is located in the bottom and the motor for the blades to blend the soup. Setting are: smooth, chunky, milk based, or cold soups. Then select one of the 6 options (the last option is for blender), each option is extremely easy to understand, just follow the Phillips recipe booklet that comes with the unit, and that is it. I have prepared soups based on milk, so the 3rd option is the right one for me. Takes about 15 minutes to finished, I was concerned about using raw chicken or meat for the soup, but never mind, everything is well cooked and I really feel confident of the soup is being prepared by this soup maker. You can even prepare your own cooled shakes or smoothies. While is cooking it is quiet, and frankly I was amazed when I saw everything was perfectly blended and cooked, even with meat. Once you put all the ingredients in the container, you cannot really open the cover and see what is going on, so it will become basically a matter of trust. I really love this unit, it is a time saver, and makes cooking a fun time too.

The Philips - Viva Collection 1.3-Quart Soupmaker is a cool gadget to have in the Kitchen. Convenient in its size a purpose but will it ever replace the traditional way of making soup, I think not. The soup maker holds 1.3 quarts, heats from the base and has a blade attached for blending purposes and also comes with a cookbook. The soupmaker has 6 settings and can have soup ready in about 18 minutes. Its a neat product that is pretty niche but I like the concept. The only thing I find a tad difficult is the cleaning of the soupmaker other than that I like the product.

This soup maker works pretty good, and cooks all the ingredients quickly in 18mins. Most other devices usually take about 30mins. One of the unique features of this soup maker, is that the mixer blade is attached to the lid, and has a slightly unconventional shape to it. The odd shape of the blade circulates the ingredients better, by forcing everything from the center to the outside. As opposed to a typical blender blade the forces everything into a whirlpool. The Philips blade rotates at ifferent speeds based on your program selection. So far the results have been very consistent between pureed and chunky soups. For pureed soups I don't waste much time chopping up ingredients, as long as I can get it into the machine, it turns out good. A little more care needs to be taken for chunky soups, if you want uniformly sized chunks. It's better to chop these to their desired sizes, before putting them in the machine. This also comes with a recipe book, with 28 different soups and drinks to make. The machine has 6 preset programs, all are easy to use, and require no supervision. Hot soups, cold soups, milk based soups, and smoothies, can all be made with little effort. You can even be creative, as this can be used as a regular blender too. Overall, this works great for a quick meal for 2, with a 1.2L capacity. Easy to use with delicious easy recipes. My only complaint, is that this is a little on the small size. As I was experimenting with different recipes and ideas, I found myself adding too many ingredients, forcing me to cook everything in 2 different sessions.

I’m not a big fan of soups, “Chili yes”, just never cared a lot for soups, my wife on the other hand, she could live on soup every day and she’s the one that’s mainly using this new soup maker from Philips. The device itself is larger than we expected, which is good as she likes to make soup good for at least two days and if she’s the one mainly eating it then she can get more than two days out of full sized batch. There’s a simple cook book included, it has a few recipes to give you an idea of what you can make but we read through them and went with our own recipes using the book as a guide as to what you can use. Operation really couldn’t be simpler, just add your ingredients up to either the lower or upper markings inside the container, put the top/blender section on it, plug it in, select the program you want and tap the power button. There are settings for pureed or chunky soup, and other settings for milk based soup “haven’t tried that yet”, compote, smoothie and manual blending. Our first test was Chili, we didn’t follow the recipe in the included book other than using it for reference. We added 1/2lb ground beef, chunked up, still raw, some onion, garlic, a can of diced tomatoes and a can of kidney beans “rinsed” and some beef broth. After plugging in the unit and selecting the “chunky” program I pressed the power button. Nothing much seemed to happen; it made a quick noise then went silent. After a few minutes we could smell it was cooking so I felt the side and was surprised how hot it got so fast “be careful putting your hand on the side of it, it gets hot surprisingly fast”. It made a couple more sort of loud short whirring sounds and then signaled it was finished. We were both skeptical when the buzzer went off because it has only been around 13 minutes, but were surprised when we opened the top to find fully cooked chili. The kidney beans didn’t survive the stirrer very well and were more chopped up than I like but overall it came out really good, even my wife was impressed. A couple days later she decided to make some butternut squash soup, her own recipe. She added around 2 cups of diced up squash, and good amount of onion, some fresh garlic, a couple diced up Roma tomatoes, salt, pepper, and some vegetable broth up to the top fill line. Once again the unit did the same thing as with the chili, only took around 13-15 minutes, making a couple whirring noises then beeping when finished. Like I mentioned before I’m not a big soup fan but this came out pretty good “I managed to finish my bowl :) “, but she was very impressed with how simple it was to just toss everything in the pot and have soup ready in just a few minutes, she’ll be using this device very often. Cleanup is pretty easy, just rinse off the stirring blades and under side of the top portion and wash out the bottom with a brush or abrasive sponge. You don’t want to submerse any of it in the sink or put it in the dish washer so this is strictly a hand wash device. It would be nice if the stirring blade was removable for cleaning “sort of like how a hand mixer would work” but it’s easy enough to take a brush to and clean it off really good. If you like soup and make it often you may really like this new Philips soup maker, it’s simple to use, cooks extremely fast and cleans up fairly easily. You really can’t make single sized portions with it, and the smallest batch is pretty big, “not stock pot big” but if your single you’re probably going to have left overs. The batch of chili we made lasted both of us two days so for us that’s about perfect as she always likes leftovers to take along to work. In all this is a pretty handy gadget. We haven’t tried the other blending settings “we have a blender”, she may never use them as it will be mostly used for soup making but it’s nice to see they added features you could use and cut down on the amount of devices sitting around in your kitchen.

I really enjoyed using this product. I was pleasantly surprised at how user friendly the soup maker was. There were multiple pre-set settings to make a variety of things including thick soups, thin soups, smoothies, and purees. This took the guess work out of what setting to select for all the different types of foods I used. I appreciated the recipe book that was included with the product, it was easy to follow and had recipes my kids and I wanted to try. So far, we’ve made 3 of the recipes in the recipe book, the Vienna hot chocolate, the banana smoothies and the chicken pot pie soup. The vienna hot chocolate was delicious, I definitely recommend it and so do my kids! The banana smoothies had a great smooth consistency and were a great fast & healthy treat for the kids. Unfortunately, the chicken pot pie soup was rather watery for our liking, but it did have a good flavor. You do not need to stir the ingredients once you’ve selected your setting which is convenient, also it can be used as a blender which is a bonus. I did find the soup maker extremely easy to clean and didn’t take up much counter space. One minor note when the setting is selected, and it starts working it would make a loud noise and startled me. You basically put your ingredients in, put the lid on and select the setting you want based on the textures or food products you are using, and the soup maker takes over and does the rest. I’d recommend this product to a friend or family and look forward to trying other fun and easy recipes.

TLDR - Overall this has made two excellent blended veggie soups, and if you want a simple way to make homemade soups this is the device you never knew you needed, but love it. My only complaint with the device is if this device had a larger sibling so I could double or triple the soup output. So far we have used the device to make two different veggie soups. First was Butternut Squash and the other Carrot, and the Viva Soupmaker handled it fine. The first time I slightly overpacked the device and it took longer and a few restarts for it to fully work it's magic. When I say overpacked I mean it. Had to jam the top down with the blade so it took cooking and softening up the butternut squash before it could blend. Mea Culpa. Even then, it didn't burn the soup and I got effortlessly well blended and awesome Butternut squash soup. The second time we didn't pack the carrots and other veggies in as tight and in about 20 minutes I had a well blended thick and tasty carrot soup. I can do other things besides blended soups. It can handle chucky and has a lower heat setting for milk based soups. Additionally it can do cold soups and Fruit Compote as well as smoothies. You can also manually run the blender without using a program. But if you are hurried for making a quick healthy dinner for you spouse, or want to have soup as a starter this device makes it simple. Add your ingredients, hit the setting you want and come back in the time required. For non-cream soups its about 20 minutes. Cleanup is fairly easy with this, but you will have to hand wash and be careful not to submerge in water, due to the eletronics and heating element all being together. But it works and makes hot soups fast without burning. That was the part that got me. Usually on my stove its hard to get the right heat and not have to watch a thick soup and get it burnt on the bottom, or have to drag another device to blend it and never get it as smooth as this. The Soupmaker didn't burn the thicker soups I made, nor were there any chunks to be found. It was smooth. That alone wins prase since the blending unit doesn't really get anywhere near the bottom of the cooker I have impressed with its power and throughness. Overall I'm thrilled with this device. Its a cooking gadget that will help me get through the long winter without having to work hard for a healthy and fast dinner. I also look forward to warm apple compote when the honey crisps come into season. I haven't had a problem with Soupmaker and would not heistate to recommend one to anyone from a college student in a dorm to a hard working professional who comes home and wants a quick, healthy hot dinner. I hope you can enjoy it as much as I have.
