I have a great deal of Pioneer audio equipment, both in my home and car, and I have always found their products to be very good "bangs for the buck". Headphone-wise, I have enjoyed my SE-M390 cans for many years, but the super-long (9-foot) cord made them ungainly for portable use. In the market for some over-the-ear headphones, I noticed that these were on sale, and I ordered a set.
When I first plugged them into my new hi-def music player, my first impression was, "wow, that's a lot of treble". Listening further, I noticed the same wide soundstage and sensitivity that I'm used to, but wow, the treble - songs had a very "sharp" edge to my ears, and my first thought was that these should be returned. However, a couple of my co-workers were headphone shopping at the same time, and we all brought our purchases to the office for comparison. As it turned out, the other units, an Audio-Technica ATH-M50x and a Sennheiser HD1 - Pink Floyd Edition were much more expensive products, and the SE-MS5T actually held its own against them. The Audio-Technica had a somewhat smoother overall sound, but the earcups were far smaller for my rather large ears and became uncomfortable rather quickly. They were also less sensitive, obligating me to turn up the volume on my player. The Sennheiser was very nice indeed, smooth and full-sounding, with some noise cancellation features, but at six times the price of the Pioneer headphones, really not a practical purchase for me. The longtime Audio-Technica owner said the Pioneer cans sounded "pretty dang good", and he was surprised at the regular price, let alone the sale price I paid.
Reading some headphone review sites, it seems there is a "burn-in" period for such products - whether it is the human brain making adjustments, the headphones themselves "wearing in" from use, or a combination of the two, these headphones now sound amazing - still a couple of notches brighter than I'm used to - but balanced and providing incredible details. Mids seemed a little thin at first, but after a while, they now sound clear and detailed. The bass response probably won't satisfy those who like loads of low-end, but it's definitely there, just tight and controlled, not boomy.
Overall, these will do nicely for now at least. I may move up to the HMR-6 later. Until then, I'll just plug these in and enjoy...
