Stopped working in 3.0 USB connection

I probably had around 10gb uploaded before the disc would shut down. Then when I removed it and inserted it back into the 3.0 drive, it didn't run at all. So I put it into the 2.0 jack and it ran fine. When I deleted all the files, ejected it and inserted it into the 3.0 jack it worked fine. So either my unit is defective, it doesn't work well in the Mac or it's not really 3.0.
