    All You Zombies

To sum this movie up in one short sentence would be to say, Predestination is a time travel movie with a paradox. The film originated from the novel All You Zombies by Robert A. Heinlein. Another film that was adapted into a film from one of Rober A. Heinlein's novels was Starship Troopers. This movie is sort of like Minority Report with time travel. I thoroughly enjoyed the film from start to finish. Some people were turned off by the ending, but I thought it was a plausible ending to a paradox of a story. Although Ethan Hawke gives a superb performance, the real star of the movie is Sarah Snook. Snook really steals the show with her performance, I can tell she's got a great career ahead of her if she continues to turn out performances like this. It's definetely a break-out performance for this young actress. As far as the story is concerned, it's a deep web of secrets that come full circle by the end of the film. It's very difficult to talk about this film without giving away too much. I highly recommend this to anyone who likes time travel movies. Please note, the novel was titled "All You Zombies", there are NO ZOMBIES in this movie.

Based on a Robert Heinlein story, the film came and went without fanfare (except for those who saw it!). Great transfer and interesting premise. I love time travel stories!!

    Mind-bending sci-fi

This film by the Spierig Brothers comes from “Down Under” and features a couple fine performances. Ethan Hawke, to no surprise and newcomer Sarah Snook who few have ever heard of. Hawke plays The Barkeep and we determine early on that he is a temporal agent who jumps back and forth throughout time. His mission is to avert catastrophes before they happen. In his current case he is trying to catch a madman from 1977, known as the “The Fizzle Bomber.” He’s tried and failed before. His cover is a bartender. Late one night he meets a stranger in the bar (Sarah Snook) who agrees to tell him a story that is so unbelievable that if he agrees, the barkeep must cough up a fine bottle of whiskey. She tells the story of an unmarried woman, whose baby was stolen shortly after being born. To say much more would give away much of the surprise and suspense. The story is an adaptation by the Spierig’s of famed sci-fi writer Robert A. Heinlein’s “All You Zombies.” And it’s a good one. This is a small budgeted film that had a limited release in the U. S. in January, 2015. So don’t expect a lot of razzle-dazzle special effects. Instead look for a mind-bending alternative that will have you guessing throughout. Pay attention to everything including things that seem to be innocuous and enjoy the intelligent and dizzying ride. The Blu ray transfer comes with 1080p video resolution and a 2.40:1 aspect ratio. While the overall look of the film is lit with restraint, the detail is excellent. The appearance of color is well done, but retains the overall muted hue. I could see no abnormalities with the transfer. Looks great. The audio comes with a DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 option and it is terrific. Again, no blockbuster special effects, but there are action sequences that resonate well throughout the surrounds. Dialog is perfectly placed, clear and consistent. Subtitles include English SDH, French and Spanish. Extras include some bloopers, a short on cast performances, previews of Sony films and 76 minute feature called “Bringing Predestination to Life.” All in all, recommended, especially for sci-fi buffs.

Well done for a low budget movie of this type. Lots of interesting dialogue that tells a very unusual story. Ethan Hawke's character draws you into a different type of story that is mostly about the people. It is driven by events regarding "Jane" played very well by Sarah Snook. There are no flashy modern time travel gadgets with the typical big money budget effects, yet there is a sophistication to the effects. This movie was done on a low budget, but you don't feel that when watching this movie. There is a simplicity to this character driven story that allows you to become involved & interested in their lives. I felt like I was traveling in a circle that led and continued on to a path that at 1st I did not find predictable. And as to the moments that led where I thought they would lead, I still found them interesting due to the storytelling. The music by Peter Spierig fit perfectly. This movie has a different style, look, pace as well as the character's unusual story line . I found myself completely engaged in this movie. I also felt free to see many interpretations that this film was eluding to. I wish there was a commentary to go with this movie by the Spierig Brothers.

    A Great Time Travel Story

"Looping" stories have seemingly become the norm for plots involving time travel, with Rian Johnson's (aptly named) Looper and Nacho Vigalondo's even earlier Timecrimes; laying the foundation the Spierig Brothers' foray into time travel. Regardless of the commonplace nature of the plot structure, what Predestination does with the concept is wholly unique, and merits your attention on it's plot alone. It's script is top-notch, which is great because, let's face it, it's really the only reason to come see this film. Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook's performances are great, but are certainly not the hook of the film. The same goes for cinematography and just about every other element of the production. If you haven't guessed by the sparse looking nature of this entry, it should tell you that the best way to enjoy this film is knowing next to nothing about it. It's a good movie, you're just not going to be writing home about anything other than the story.

Predestination is a very different sort of a movie. The first time I saw this movie was when I noticed it in my public library. I decided to take it out for two reasons. One, it's a time travel story, and I enjoy those. Two, Ethan Hawke was in it, and I had just finished seeing him in Precinct 13, and enjoyed him in that. Well I was very, very glad that I did take it out! Feel free to look up the story line for yourself. This is not an action film, but more of a thought-provoking film. Think of it is as a, action with character development. The Blu-ray looks beautiful. There's a 75 minute documentary on how they made it, which is also very interesting. I really enjoyed hearing what the actors had to say about playing the parts they were playing. I don't want to give anything away, because while watching this movie, it doles out information to help you put all the pieces together. And I enjoyed that very much. I really enjoyed learning about the characters. It was a very smart script. And very thoughtful. Well done all the way around. Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook are wonderful. Especially Sarah. I've never seen her before, but I'm looking forward to seeing her again. When I saw this will be on sale at Best Buy, it was a no-brainer! I had to get it. This type of story, and character development, may not be for everybody. It was for me. I hope if you do purchase this movie, that you enjoy it as much as I have.

I have been an avid reader of Robert A. Heinlein since high school. There have been several attempts at bringing his work to the screen with varying degrees of success but in all cases the Hollywood alterations have compromised Heinlein's unique style, making them "just movies". This little masterpiece has managed to capture that beautifully! Adapted from the short: "All You Zombies" with fantastic performances from Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook. I have no doubt that this title will eventually "go dark" and people will have to resort to paying extravagant prices on eBay to get their hands on a copy - get yours before this happens!

This is not your slam-bang endless action movie. Instead it is a complex well thought-out thought-provoking plot starting in the future and time-traveling to the past to understand and save the future. If you are looking for the typical endless high-action movie, you will not enjoy this movie. However, if you are looking for something that challenges your mind, you will love this movie. As soon as I finished seeing it, I wanted to re-watch it to understand anything I'd missed. I am not conveying the plot as that would spoil the movie experience.

Great time travel film! Based on the creative short-story "All You Zombies" (and quite literally a *short* story), this stays quite true to the written work, expanded for film run-time but they developed the story and characters pretty true to the original written work. You may feel it starting off a bit odd as it dives into the story...but hang in there, even though one of the key elements is a little, "uhhh....no", it's still a pretty cool movie and one to bring discussions around the office cubicles.

If you're in the mood for a time travel story that goes more off the beaten path this might be for you. It's more of a character study film, diving into what makes the few characters in it tick, and explains how they got to who they are. Time travel does play into it, but it's more of a device used to explain why characters are the way they are than a way to show the audience fantastic locations and adventures. There is actually very little action in this film, which might disappoint some, as the movie does build expectations of explosive confrontations that never quite come. But if you're looking for a more thoughtful, weirder, character-based time travel movie, then look no further.

Not sure how to describe this mind bender. Overall I thought this was a good movie with a different, but disturbing plot line. The thought that someone can be traveling through time and manipulate people in such a way that it results in this person having intimate relations with their future selves resulting in their past birth is disturbing. I don't want to completely give up the ending, but that too is disturbing. If you like mindbenders than this movie is for you.

This is what the Real Science Fiction work should be, exactly. While it's based on [very] short story of the Sci-Fi master writer, the movie made steps to explore the story deeper and wider and it paid off hugely! It is the master piece of work of both actors. They silk the story in such a believable way that you do have no choice but follow and co-feel the stories of them both, actors are so natural in every scene, with every thought or emotion. I heard that was a good movie, but when I actually watched it, it blown my brain away, exceeded any and all expectations. The real Sci-Fi and a template for the classical Sci-Fi movie!

Huge Ethan Hawke fan, the guy is brilliant. This movie was a mind-f**k of epic proportions. Time travel movies are always fun even if there are always paradoxes that negate the storyline, but this one makes me want to watch it a few more times just so I can keep track of what is actually happening.

Before purchasing this title I had seen a trailer for the movie which sparked my interest, and being that it was about time travel combined with the low price during a visit to Best Buy I decided to take a chance and purchase it. I was pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it was. It was a fresh take to time travel and overall worth the purchase.
