John Carpenter's "The Prince of Darkness" is a chilling and thought-provoking horror film that showcases the director's mastery of creating an eerie and suspenseful atmosphere. Released in 1987, this lesser-known gem deserves more recognition for its unique take on the supernatural genre. The story follows a group of scientists and students who come together in an abandoned church to investigate a mysterious cylinder containing a swirling, green liquid believed to be S*tan himself. As they delve deeper into the enigmatic artifact's secrets, they uncover ancient prophecies and face increasingly vicious occurrences, leading them to question the very fabric of reality. Carpenter's trademark eerie music and use of shadows build tension throughout the film. The ominous score perfectly complements the unsettling visuals, making the audience squirm in their seats. The director's ability to create a feeling of claustrophobia within the vast and empty church heightens the sense of impending doom, leaving viewers on the edge of their seats. The ensemble cast delivers commendable performances, with Donald Pleasence as the enigmatic priest and Victor Wong as the eccentric professor, standing out in their respective roles. The chemistry among the characters feels genuine, and the tension between skepticism and belief adds an intriguing layer to the narrative. One of the film's standout aspects is its philosophical exploration of the battle between science and religion. Carpenter cleverly weaves together quantum physics, theology, and ancient mythology themes, creating a compelling narrative that keeps the audience guessing until the climactic finale. "The Prince of Darkness" invites contemplation on the nature of evil, the limits of human knowledge, and the interplay between faith and reason. While the film may not have enjoyed the same commercial success as some of Carpenter's other works, it remains a cult favorite among horror enthusiasts for its unique storyline, atmospheric presentation, and thought-provoking themes. In conclusion, "The Prince of Darkness" is a haunting and atmospheric horror film that showcases John Carpenter's artistic prowess. This is a must-watch if you're a fan of intelligent horror that delves into the unknown and leaves you pondering its implications long after the credits roll. Just be prepared for a spine-chilling journey into the depths of darkness that will linger with you well after the final scene.

A very nice transfer of a surprisingly influential Carpenter film. The 4k transfer is very good if not spectacular but, the original video effects are well done and surprisingly still chilling. It will explain how Carpenter got their first visually and why he is so influential. The film is arguably a bit dated but, fans of low budget will appreciate the shots and the pacing (glacial like The Fog or Precinct 13) and efficient use of the actors. Don't get this because you think Alice Cooper is in it a lot, get it because he's in it just enough. Very old school plot, weird, funky 70s/80s vibe that probably would have really worked had it went full documentary vibe, which was a few years off. But, as I say, see it just to view the nightmare/video sequences which are really well done and involuntarily set your nervous system on edge. Worth the time if you're not in a hurry or expecting a bunch of jump scares.

Prince of Darkness has always been a strange film, but very effectively creepy with its visuals and tone. The idea to mix religion and science into the story is unique and much appreciated. Regular Carpenter actors, Donald Pleasance and Victor Wong, are both great in the film. The picture quality is great, considering this is a film source, which transfers very well to UHD. Sound holds up well, and is as good as it will likely ever be on a home media format.

This is a wonderful remastered edition of a John Carpenter under appreciated classic. I like that Scream Factory did their own color grade on this opposed to the original StudioCanal UK release. The colors are more natural and a bit subdued. I think it and the new Dolby Atmos soundtrack aid the film immensely. I truly enjoy this erie, creepy film, and more so now in 4K!

A low budget John Carpenter spook fest. I love the film but the 4k color is a little wonky. However the increased detail in the new 4k scan is an improvement. The enclosed Blu is loaded with bonus features and without the color issues of you want the benefit of the new scan and find the colors on the 4k too jarring.

I like this movie when it first came out and I definitely recommend buying it on 4K. When the man gets stabbed with the bike you can actually see the blood spray out behind him in this version the original version you couldn't see it it was too dark.

An underrated John Carpenter classic from 1987. If you're looking at this, then you know it's so. It looks wonderful. I don't love new-fangled audio mixes on older films, but this one is tastefully done. Thankfully, the original mix is still there.

John Carpenter’s the price of darkness is a quality 4K Blu-ray with good audio and video for a close to 25 years old film it helps if you’re a fan of his work. And if you’re reading this review you most likely are; the story line is a fun and original idea to be sure

When I heard that this movie was coming out in 4k, I was excited to pick it up when it released. I wasn't able to get it when it first came out, but I'm glad I did pick it up. Seeing this movie in 4k and hearing it on 5.1 speakers is phenomenal.

The 4K transfer is not as good as They Live but definitely worth the purchase. If you love John Carpenter’s end of the world movies, then this is for you. Plus, this has the alternate opening not available on the DVD version!

This science meets occult gem is without a doubt John Carpenter's most overlooked film. It's never looked better than this and should please horror fans looking for something off beat and slightly under the radar.

Like the they live 4k the his has the original art instead of the garbage art on the other scream factory slip releases. Studio canal does have a 4k release of this as well but it’s debatable which is better or by how much. This is a brand that’s easily accessible to most Americans vs the studio canal which is an import.

One of my favorite John Carpenter films, and in my opinion, the last really decent film he directed. It's creepy, thought provoking, and makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Check it out folks.

Saw this originally in the theater upon original release. Thought it was laughably bad then…but because I love bad movies I bought this just to see how it’s aged. It’s cheapness (budget & thrills) have grown on me since. Not as terrible as I remembered it. Crisp image and okay extras.
