Game-Changing Upgrades with Room for Improvement!

For the Quest 3, Meta has made some significant upgrades, such as reducing the weight, introducing new pancake lenses that are much sharper and higher in resolution, and including an improved processor that is faster. Additionally, the Quest 3 features a more powerful GPU for better graphics. Battery life remains about the same, lasting 2–3 hours depending on usage. If you’re debating whether it’s worth upgrading from a Quest 2 or choosing it over the Quest 3S, I’d say that if you’re an active VR user who enjoys their headset, the answer is yes—and here’s why. Right away, I noticed how much sharper the image was, no matter how the headset was positioned on my face. The previous lenses tended to blur if you looked away from the center, but thankfully, the Quest 3’s upgraded lenses eliminate this issue. Unfortunately, these new lenses are exclusive to the Quest 3. If you were okay with the lenses on the Quest 2, the Quest 3S could be a solid alternative. The higher resolution, combined with the 120Hz refresh rate, creates a buttery-smooth picture that reduces eye fatigue. Beyond the improved image quality, the performance difference is night and day. Gone is the occasional lag that would sometimes occur, even while navigating the UI. The web browser also benefits from this added power, no longer freezing up when loading websites with many ads. Games take full advantage of the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 processor, with graphics-intensive titles now maintaining a steady frame rate. This results in smoother gameplay and a more enjoyable experience overall, especially with the addition of the Batman game—an absolutely awesome experience that’s a must-play for fans of the series. Downsides • Battery Life: Battery life remains short. If you’re just watching videos, you might get close to 3 hours, but for games like Batman, expect closer to half of that. • Comfort: While adjustments to the strap make it easier to use and an improvement over the Quest 2, the headset is still top-heavy. For those who found the Quest 2 uncomfortable, the Quest 3 will likely feel similar. During a 2-hour session, I found myself taking it off several times to readjust for comfort. Personally, the pressure on the sides of my head after about an hour and a half becomes noticeable. There’s an additional strap available for purchase that might help with this. • Eyeglass Friendliness: It’s still not very eyeglass-friendly. I’ve read reports of users scratching the lenses while wearing glasses. There’s an accessory on Amazon that prevents glasses from making contact with the lenses, which may be worth considering. Thankfully, my vision isn’t too bad yet, so I mostly use the headset without glasses. Other Improvements • Audio: The built-in speakers have been improved, directing sound more effectively to your ears. You no longer need to max out the volume to hear clearly. With Bluetooth support, I found that wireless earbuds provided a more immersive experience. • External Cameras: The external cameras are significantly better, now supporting color passthrough mode. This makes it easier to read text on your phone or interact with your surroundings. • Controllers: The controllers feel more precise, even without the rings they used to have. However, in a completely dark room, the Quest 3 struggles to detect them when first powering on or after a break. I’ve had to use my phone as a flashlight so the headset could locate the controllers. This was especially noticeable when using the headset for stationary activities like watching YouTube or Netflix in bed. Final Thoughts Ultimately, there are two ways to approach this upgrade. If you were satisfied with the Quest 2 but just wished for better performance and didn’t mind the fisheye lenses, the Quest 3S is an excellent option. It provides all the performance improvements and camera upgrades from the Quest 3, but without the new pancake lenses. However, if the fisheye lenses were a deal-breaker and you’re looking for a more polished VR experience, the Quest 3 might be the solution you’ve been waiting for. For me, the Quest 2 saw minimal use due to its performance limitations and the eye fatigue caused by its lenses. The Quest 3 addresses these issues effectively. Now, Meta just needs to focus on making the headset more comfortable to wear and improving battery life.

      Hi there,

First of all, congratulations on upgrading from your Quest 2 to the Quest 3! We know you're excited to convert over your account and we definitely want to help with that.

Any previous purchases you have made are attached to the Meta account itself, and not your Quest 2 headset, so if you're not seeing your games on the new headset, it would suggest you've not logged in to the new device with the same account.

We'd love to have a closer look at your account to confirm this for you however, so please don't hesitate to reach out to us via the Meta support channels where a lovely member of our 24/7 staff will be more than happy to get this resolved for you so that you can get back into the Metaverse on your upgraded device! oculus

      Hi CFord,

Thank you for the insightful review!

We're sorry to hear that the headset was too heavy for your neck. Your feedback will help our development for a more comfortable and immersive experience.

For now - We do offer the elite head strap which adds additional support and distributes the weight of the device more evenly.

We hope that you can return to the Metaverse in better comfort in the near future! oculus

Didn't even get a chance to use this product, This is more a complain on the brand META, I paid over $500 for this VR Headset, Wanted to use it as soon as I got home. Come to realize it forces you have to use a META app for whatever reason instead of just letting you connect to any computer. While my issue was when I would sign into META , it would tell me "there is something wrong, please try again later" I said okay, service must be down, so I tried again the following day for the same error. Went on for a week before I got tired of it and had to return it. Couldn't even get a live rep for assistance.

Video passthrough is pretty cool. That's about all I got to experience with the Quest 3. Tried to connect it to wifi, it connects, it says my network is "limited" and provides no further details on what that means. I have a gigabit connection, an Opnsense router that has more computing power than this headset, and a Wifi 6 Ubiquiti AP. My home network is the least limited thing I own. I do have Unbound DNS with blocklists, maybe it's a DNS thing, but the headset doesn't let me choose a different DNS server, so I'll never know. Whatever, it's still connected despite its complaining, I continue, it tries to update, and that's as far as I ever got. It sits doing nothing for several minutes, then it reboots and we're back to square one. Connect to wifi, blah blah limited blah blah, update, reboot, repeat. So I download the stupid Meta app on my phone to see if pairing it will work. I had to reboot the headset a couple more times for it to finally give me a code, I enter it, fails to connect. I reboot the headset, restart the stupid app, enter the code, fails to connect. Took it back to Best Buy and got a refund. Buy anything else.

Best Buy is a Breeding Ground for Scam Artists

I did not purchase this, a scammer did. My bank alerted me to a fraudulent charge and I got my money back, but since my order was placed for pick up I attempted to call the store so they could intercept my product. Really this was a courtesy to them because no one had actually paid for the device. However, it was so impossible to reach an actual human being to explain the situation to through that Best Buy was no help at all. Since the bots recognize my number and associate with an order, each time I called they said that my order was ready for pickup. But after the FIFTH attempt to speak to an actual human being, the bot informed me my order had been picked up. This scam happens a lot with Best Buy, so if you ever start receiving 100 emails in one minute from websites you’ve never subscribed to, check your charges.
