Yes, I’m that old that I had a Gear VR which took your phone and put it in the special goggle holder and boom, you’re in VR. The resolution was terrible, the available content was small and no one knew what they were doing. It was basically just a flat screen monitor operating system with a 3D skin. I got headaches instantly and was always fussing with the focus. Boy has that all changed. The Meta Quest 3S is supposed to be the “downgraded” version or intro version of the meta quest 3, and if that’s true, I am very curious to see how a Quest 3 performs, because the 3s is still really great VR. I was pleasantly surprised to learn I did NOT need to sign into my facebook/meta account to use the meta quest. They didn’t force Facebook/instagram/watsapp/etc on me, although they are preinstalled, I was actually able to uninstall them as well. Some apps you can not uninstall but these are apps like “contacts” “calendar” and other basics like that. I did have to make an avatar and username which does seem kind of like an account, but at least I didn’t need to use my personal FB account just to use the Quest. Before I get into the use of the device, I wanted to touch on the fit. One of the first things I did was go to [a smiling online shopping site] to look for a better head strap and face mask cover. The stock strap is fine for quick use, but anything long term or exercise related will make your forehead look like Peyton Manning after a long NFL game. There are some cheap options out there to upgrade your comfort and block out light and it has made a difference. Once the basic setup and fit was complete and I went through all the settings to turn off tracking, data collection, and other privacy settings that are on by default, but thankfully, there was a decent amount of settings I was allowed to turn off. There are some basic hand tracking and room identification settings you can turn off but basically makes it useless, so you do have to allow that. But once that was done I was ready to dive in and see what I could do. The VR environment is amazing, but the AR is also really nice. With the full color passthrough available, you can see your surroundings to quickly recenter yourself or grab a drink etc, albeit a bit digitized and with a massive rolling shutter problem. I tried to check my phone for example, and although I COULD read it, it was not comfortable for very long and I would get a headache trying to squint at the screen. For quick check stuff, it’s fine. I am curious if the 3 is better quality, but for an intro device, this is beyond good. You can also use the passthrough to do AR gaming, like the demo they have where aliens appear to be coming out of your own house walls. I’m really excited to see where this technology is going. There’s a simple tutorial of sorts that quickly shows you how to use the controls and navigate around and it didn’t take long before I felt like Tony Stark grabbing at tabs and moving them around me while I worked. Using the included controllers is much more accurate but if you turn on hand tracking and get used to the controls, you can actually have a lot of fun “touching” the environment. The meta quest doesn’t just know where you are pointing, it knows the depth you are pointing at too. For example, if the window you are using is “far away” from you, you can not “touch” the buttons in the window. But a little dot appears and you can pinch two fingers together to “click” the button. But if you grab the corner of the window and move it closer to your face, within arms reach, then you can simply use it like a touch screen. I mean, I was literally having a blast just playing around with the menu and settings in passthrough sitting in my lazyboy. Again, eat your heart out Tony Stark. There are a lot of resources out there if you want to know the differences between the 3 and the 3s and I don’t want to make this review even longer, but things I did notice on the 3s that I’ve heard are not an issue on the 3 are worth noting. The focus, the pupil distance setting, and the resolution. Now, that’s not to say this makes the 3s useless and go buy the 3. I still love the 3s and think it’s the first “intro level” VR available that actually gives you a good value to dip your toes into VR. But I am only saying this to help those who may be on the fence. The lenses are different on the two devices, and that does make me blink a lot trying to “focus” when I look anywhere off center. I wear contacts and if you know, you know, when they dry out, sometimes you lose focus a little. I kept subconsciously reacting to the out of focus picture as if my contacts were dry and I would blink and try to regain focus. I quickly learned that you have to put anything you want to see sharp in the center of the screen for best results. I have not tried the 3, but I hear those lenses are better and prevent this. Only having 3 pupil distant options is also a major difference in the two. If you are in between, like I seem to be, then you have to choose the one closest to comfort and just deal with it. I THINK this is why some things look like double vision at certain distances in VR to me, but I am not exactly sure yet. I’ve only had the device for a few days. Ok, let’s talk motion sickness. I am the guy who can’t use his phone in the passenger seat of a car without getting nauseous. Not throwing up nauseous, but floaty head, uncomfortable for hours after the car ride nauseous for sure. Remember that old Gear VR I mentioned, that thing made me want to upchuck within 30 min of stationary use. The Meta Quest does not do that to me, and if I am doing something in VR that is stationary, meaning not moving through virtual space, I can sit there for hours without any uncomfortable feeling. Even better if I am in AR where I can still “see” my reality surroundings. But when I went to the meta browser and saw some suggested VR games, I tried a totally not spider-man for copyright reasons “web swinging” game and although super crazy fun and simple, the motion of flying through the air and swinging from buildings did start to make me a little uncomfortable after maybe 30 minutes or so. I felt like I could go longer, but I have heard that you should work yourself up to it if you get sick from VR. Slow and steady. So I stopped and took a break from VR. So all of that to say, MAYBE the quest 3, with better lenses and resolution and optics, is better for those like me who get sick, but even the 3S is still insanely better than any of the older VR. Because of this personal issue I have with motion sickness, I have been hesitant to spend so much money on a headset if I can’t use it. But I am very confident I can use the meta quest 3s, at least stationary, without getting sick. Bonus, the headset came with a free copy of the batman arkham game, which I love that series, but I have not yet played it, as I am trying to work myself up to a decent comfort level before playing too much movement games. I did research around to see what others said though and it’s getting increasingly more difficult to not jump right in. Including Batman was a genius idea on meta’s part and should be a huge selling point. If you’re not into batman, or missed the deal, there is still a lot of content and games to use, you can be productive, play, social, or just put on avatar clothes inside a spaceship. The store could use some work, but we all know that will happen even if it was perfect already. Updates make companies feel like they’re “doing something” so I won’t even bother saying my thoughts on the store software. I said long ago that VR will eventually be how we all interact, and I think this day is coming soon. Get in on the ground floor and grab yourself a meta quest now, you won’t be disappointed.

Not as good as the 3 but amazing as well I did however not like the lenses so we ended up returning this one and getting the 3 with the nicer pancake lenses and 4k
