I believe Sly knew he wasn’t going to top the scale and bombastic levels of carnage achieved with Rambo 4 (2007) so he instead tried to bring the series back to its roots with a much more focused, personal tale. A gritty, realistic and exceptional take on the evolution of the character John Rambo as he once again suffers loss and has to battle with his demons. A true master of the action movie craft, Sly made this movie for his fans and like in most cases. NOT for the critics. As a stand alone action movie, it delivers raw, unfiltered and carnal violence to a level only Stallone knows how to achieve. No fuss, no slow motion, no unnecessary lag-just a lean and mean action flick. As a sequel to the series, it’s once again a home run for the character we have seen developed for over 30 years. “Best” movie of 2019? That’s about as subjective as it gets but it’s my personal favorite and the one I had the most fun at the theaters with this year.
