I am obsessed with this Square Reader! I was able to take it to my vendor market this past weekend and use it at my booth! Before having the Square reader i was limited to only cash, cashapp, venmo and paypal payments but now with the Square reader i am able to accept credit and debit cards on site at all of my vendor markets! It is easy to set up and use. I followed the instructions and set up my square acckunt and linked my reader to the account. I was able to cusfomize what i wanted through my square dashboard . This square reader can be used for tap pay or inserting the chip of your card. It is quick and effective to take a payment through this squafe reader! My customers loved that i was able to offer them this method of payment. The square reader connects to your dashboard giving you all of your transactions and data that you need. It is small and compact fitting it the palm of your hand! I love that its easy for me to take on the go to all of my vendor markets. Its rechargeable which is great and it connects to your phone or tablet using Bluetooth! Overall my experience with the square reader for contactless pay is amazing and i highly reccomend it for all small buisness owners!

I’ve been using Square for years and have used their 3.5mm headphone jack magstripe card reader in the past, but now that many cards have chips or contactless payment options (EMV), credit issuers have shifted liability to the merchant, meaning that swiping a magstripe can leave business owners like myself liable for payment disputes and fraudulent charges if we don’t make use of these more secure capture methods when available.
While the Square app on my smartphone can already accept contactless card payments and digital wallets like Google and Apple Pay via NFC, having this card reader also allows me to dip credit cards with chips that don’t have this capability, as well as gives me a separate portable device the customer can tap their contactless cards or phone to rather than my phone.
This device is convenient for me since my business is mobile, and I tend to meet customers where they are. The unit is lightweight and compact; I can slip the Square reader into my pocket, and its internal battery lasts all day on a full charge. It goes to ‘sleep’ after 2 hours to conserve battery life as well, but wakes up instantly when you press the power button. It charges quickly via the included USB-C cable. There are 4 LED indicators to let you know the approximate amount of battery life and status of the payment, though you can view a percentage number for the battery in the app.
Setup is as simple as opening the Square app on a mobile device, selecting “Connect a Reader” in the settings, and then pairing over Bluetooth. Once connected to your Square account, you can start capturing payment data and processing payment right away. I like that there are no monthly fees and the per transaction fees are reasonable (2.6% + 10 cents per in-person tap, dip, or swipe payment or 6% + 30 cents for an Afterpay transaction). The Android app also has a simple-to-use point of sale interface with user-friendly navigation, from adding items and updating inventory, to creating a cart for the customer and offering discounts on-the-fly. You can select other payment types like Cash App, online/QR code payments, cash or check, and send the customer digital receipts via text and/or email or a printed receipt using a printer.
For card payments, the proceeds less transaction fees are added to your Square account balance which you can transfer out to another bank at any time or you can open a checking with Square to have instant access to your balance via a debit card.
Overall, I’ve had only good experiences with Square accepting payments for my business. The contactless card and chip reader gives me and my customers another secure option for on-the-go payments, is simple to setup, and ready to use in minutes.

I bought this device for our wrestling club to help speed up payments and allow for credit/debit/apple pay and other digital payments for our admissions and concessions sales. Sales basically doubled as a result of us being able to advertise/offer these options (which previously were limited to Venmo and Cash). If you have a small business and want to increase your retail sales, this is a very cheap option and will grow your business exponentially! It's so fast and seamless to setup and get paid and reduced our admission lines for all of our tournaments.

I have been searching for a square reader for some time as my old 1st generation broke. I was so excited to try out the new 2nd generation Square reader and very glad I did. It seems that this square reader lasted a lot longer on a charge vs. the 1st generation. I was also impressed at how easy it was to setup / sync with my phone as well as the tablet. The ability to provide contactless payments (also known as NFC) worked great. Many of my customers used either Apply Pay or Google Pay. It does also work with Samsung Pay however I have not had a chance to use that aspect of it as I did not have anyone who used Samsung Pay. Overall the software was very easy to use and sign into along with how quickly it was to setup. The USB C charge makes it go pretty quick on the charging along with how light it was. It is very easy to travel with and I do like how it includes a short usb c cable with it.
Overall I would recommend upgrading to the 2nd generation square reader if you have not already done so. This was such a great upgrade for myself and happy that I did!

The set up is so easy and there is so many things you can do to make your company or even just vendor use easier. Everyone was surprised we could take card for a tournament this year it helped u get sales we wouldn’t have been able to get without it. I didn’t know there was a fee for depositing money but it’s a learn as you go process. We had the ipad stand with the card swipe at the bottom. Sometimes it was difficult to swipe cards, sometimes the cards did not go through - our location is in a valley and it seemed the weather was a factor on how quickly transactions went through. After starting to use this device, talk about much quicker transactions! A tap payment was crazy fast, chip a bit slower but very fast! It does not come with the dock, I purchased that separately. You can use without the dock, and in our situation it was probably better without it b/c we could go outside with ipad, select items and have customers tap/insert card without having them come back. But once I installed the dock, I was unable to get the device out of it, I actually sliced my finger trying to remove it, so it stayed in the dock! Overall a good purchase and made our transactions much easier!

This is the perfect size product.
When you are traveling, you can bring this anywhere.
Straight out of the box you can pair with your cellphone or tablet.
Just make sure you have the app.
Being able to accept payment from people’s credit card, debit card and even phone is a real time saver when trying to get paid.
A full charge will last a few events for me.
I do keep the charging cord close by.
Just in case it goes past a battery percentage that I’m not comfortable with.
I will say the only thing I don’t like is the white color.
Since I use it so often and it’s so small it gets used a lot, touched a lot and even dropped, so that white color doesn’t stay clean.
I wish they had a black or even a dark clue color.
Either way this product is great for a small business owner and I’m happy with it it overall.
So far this device has worked with all types of cards. All expect gift cards.
But that’s all good. Not many people try and pay with gift cards.
If you are looking to diversify this is a good option.

Having sold my retail business a more than a decade ago where we had a dedicate hardwired credit card terminal that cost $695 hardware, plus transactional fees, we now operate from the home office. This 2nd Gen Square credit card reader considerably lowers the cost of entry for small home and mobile businesses.
The first generation worked just fine for me, well that is until Apple removed the 3.5mm headphone jack from their phones ;-) This 2nd gen product now works wirelessly via bluetooth connection and is far more convenient.
Additionally the updated Square app adds not just the chip reader but also tap to mobile iPhone.
Setup was pretty straightforward. I was able to recover and migrate my existing account, connected the new Square reader to Bluetooth, and launch the Square app. However the More…settings….hardware….setup square chip reader continually failed at pairing.
For giggles I verified that the tap credit card to iPhone worked, and it did seamlessly, but for some reason the reader would not pair. I contacted their online chat support but was unable to get a response, a problem for another day.
After much experimentation the solution turned out to be to
* first remove it from the not connected Bluetooth settings (Forget Device),
* Insure phone settings allows Square app to access Bluetooth
* and then initialize the chip reader by holding power button for 20 seconds until AFTER both a series of 4 amber and then red LEDs flashed.
After doing so I repeated the pairing process from within the square app, and was able to pair, and perform a test charge both by inserting a credit card, as well as the super convenient Tap to Pay feature that has become ubiquitous at Point of Sale terminals.
There is nothing not to like about the new 2nd gen reader (save for my pairing glitch). The 2.6% plus $0.10 per charge (dip, tap, or swipe) and 3.5% plus $0.15 keyed-in (due to higher fraud potential if card not present) credit card fees are in-line with what other businesses spend, and you get a convenient sticker showing the plethora of payment methods you now accept thanks to Square and this nifty 2nd gen contactless chip reader.
Battery life seems quite good, going to sleep after a couple of hours between transactions. There are 4 amber LeDs on top that signify the battery life, when it get to a solid red single light it’s time to charge the reader with USB-A to laptop or iPhone block charger, or from USB-C devices (USB-A to USB-C cable included)
PROS
+ useful Square app
+ fits into small pockets
+ wireless BT connection
+ contactless tap, dip, swipe
+ within minutes accept
*Apple Pay
*Google Pay
*Cash App
*Visa
*MasterCard
*American Express
*JCB (not tested)
*NFC debit cards
+ professional text or email receipts
+ color coded battery indicator (red=charge)
+ it’s never been easier to launch a small biz
+ Square app offers business management tools
Cons
-pairing glitch, restore to factory settings fixed it
-chat support failed to respond to two separate requests
Conclusion:
It’s never been easier to start a small business. Accepting only personal checks and cash is unprofessional in todays marketplace. Square makes it easy to legitimize payments and deposits, while providing customers piece of mind that post-sale they have their credit card company on their side.

Very simple to use, intuitive. The reader sometimes has some issues reading tap-to-pay cards immediately, but that can be due to card condition and not necessarily tied back to the reader. Regardless, this is a minor obstacle to overcome, well worth the investment.
